Please don’t stress too much about comparing Jackson and what he’s doing, to those his age. All babies develop and hit milestones differently. As long as his Ped is fine and happy with his development, he’s fine. 😊

Family Nurse Practitioner and mom of 2 here! In regard to initiating food, I always recommend parents start towards the beginning of the sixth month, if they feel comfortable! You also want to watch for other signs of food readiness such as: being able to sit up independently, interest in food, and bringing objects to the mouth. @feedinglittles is an amazing IG resource for baby feeding as well! Good luck!

I noticed that too. He is very smart..(both my kids were/are too.. and so are the grandkids) they have nothing to stress about. Just read story books to him and he will pick up reading very easily..as soon as he is able to sit with you and see the pictures and pages turning. Like everything else it becomes familiar more and more as his understanding grows.

I remember so well that feeling that my daughter wanted to communicate but couldn’t! We ended up learning some sign language and started using it way before we thought she could understand us (the same way we tell them with words what we’re doing or what something is...) We used Baby Signing Time videos but I know there are lots of good resources out there. I was absolutely blown away at how much she could communicate long before she could talk verbally! Signs like “more” and “all done” and “milk” and “water” and “hungry” and “thirsty”...they helped diffuse so many meltdowns that would have happened because of the frustration of not being able to communicate!

Tape Eater thank you! It was quite scary. We moved here about a year ago and this is out first tornado warning. It was especially scary because there are no basements here. The sirens were so loud and it literally was 8-10 miles from us and fortunately wound up turning and didn’t come this way. Very thankful ❤️ and no one was hurt today in any of the storms that crossed Central Florida.

Research Baby led weaning (food introduction, no need to wean). Baby cereal in general is actually really hard and constipating. Many skip it all together now.
@caitandrews533
@caitandrews533 4 жыл бұрын
yea totally, the reason we introduce foods at 5-6 months is because that's when baby's iron stores start to run out after birth. egg yolk or blended cooked meat are great first foods for this reason, easy to digest and have a very bioavailable source of iron. their pediatrician is living in the last century.

Hey Jenn and Tim! Former pediatric nurse and mom of 4 here. 6 months (the day they turn 6 months old) is the general guideline for starting solids, but it’s generally recommended to wait until babies show readiness signs...sitting up on their own, no tongue thrusting, and things like that. My babies did well with baby-led weaning where you start letting babies explore food on their own. They were ready usually between 7-8 months old. I think Jackson will let you know when he’s ready! Good job reading his cues already! 👍

I learned from my wise gardener friend who has been doing it for decades - If you want crunchy pickles, make sure to cool the pickling liquid to room temp or even cool overnight before pouring into your jars. You can also soak the cucumbers in an ice water bath for 2-3 hours before. It only needs to be hot pickling liquid if you're sealing the jars for storage. They will taste like pickles after 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator! If you can find, or have a friend that grows dill in their backyard, ask for the dill flowers. They have a great flavor for pickling! Mustard seed, peppercorns and oregano are my go-to spices as well as what you added, and try using apple cider vinegar for bonus flavor. Try pickling zucchini! I actually prefer it over cucumber pickles. Thanks for posting videos to keep us entertained during this time!

And only add hot liquid to hot jars, the temperature change (hot liquid into cold jars) could break the jars. Never use table salt, it has additives that can cause discoloration and I have been told, mushy pickles. I took a canning class and we did dilly beans, WHICH WAS AWESOME!!!! This year we are growing green beans, just so I am able to can the dilly beans. There are some wonderful you tubers who did canning videos, I have learned SO much from them.

Yeah, hot water creates a slight vacuum when it cools down that helps the pickles to survive for longer times. Also I think you should have more salt then as it also help preserving. If you just want to do quick pickles I don't think you really even need to boil the liquid. The salt will melt overtime, especially if you use that little salt.

A while ago you guys were asking about what pots and pans to use, we have used "The Food Network" Ceramic 10 piece set(bought at Kohl's) for a couple years and have found this brand to be very good. You have to use rubber, non abrasive or non metal utensils when cooking with them. They are so easy to clean(we don't ever put them in the dishwasher because they are so easy to clean and we don't want them to get beat up in there. We love the set so much that we bought a set for our son when he moved out! Not to expensive if you catch them on a good sale. Love the vlog's so much, thank you for sharing!

Hi Guys! Hey, there is a nice baby milestone on iTunes by the CDC. It gives you a place to take notes, I think you can change the picture for Jackson, check out milestones that baby should make by the end of the month. Then there is advice if you do not see the baby working on the upcoming skills and a place to jot your notes down. It isn’t overly thorough every baby is different and has a “window” of time to develop those skills. I heard you got a Highchair!! So fun! Even when you are working in the kitchen, he can be sitting there at your level watching and learning. It’s also fun to do messy play on the high chair when he is ready for that! Have fun!!

You can pickle asparagus, cauliflower, carrots, celery, peppers.....just about any type of garden vegetable. Pickled green beans (called Dilly Beans) are AMAZING!!!!!!!! Sometimes, home grown cucumbers can be bitter on the ends. That’s maybe why they want you to cut that part off when making pickles.

LOL - Can't believe Prosperity Pig is still hangin' out! LOL., He actually looks like a really fat Prosperity Sheep! ROLTFL at the conversation about pimento cheese! Kirby cukes are my faves - they're chubbier than the minis, but the inis are OK. Both have a very small mount, or very little in size, but tender, seeds. I prefer to use Kirbys in salads, etc, because they're easier to peel - being a little wider - than the mnis. Used to make pickles all the time as a kid with my Nanna, but don't remember anything about the flower end being/not being in there. I also love pickled green tomatoes - yummmmmmm!!!!! Have to watch the sodium though, I'm old and hypertensive. LOL. ROTFL at the squirrel hanging out in his new bird house, just chillin;! Hi Tim and Jen, I was listening to you guys talking about Jackson’s cereal and when to start back at it. Infants are usually recommended to start between 4-6 months, but Jackson will tell you when he’s ready. You might notice his demeanour change, or he might not sleep very well, and he will show interest in what you’re eating. After the 6 month mark the milk just doesn’t have enough nutrient to sustain him solely (I think it’s iron in particular that they need more of?). As he’s a big boy (so freaking chubby and cute!), I’d probably recommend starting at the start of 6 months, but if he’s happy within himself you should be okay to wait a few weeks if his belly is still a bit iffy. You can also dilute the milk and cereal combination with a little bit of water to ease the transition. I hope this helps! Also, don’t stress about his milestones, he’s doing great! X

Promise..a squirrel will get into every contraption cause they are crafty bandits.. My mom has bought 5 different squirrel "safe" bird feeders. Everytime a squirrel finds a way.😂😂 you could put those pickles on a sandwich with peanut butter. Sounds weird but its quite good and yes..pickle some eggs. After putting your boiled eggs in a glass jar, cover them with apple cider vinegar and add some water. Put garlic powder and fresh ground pepper in. Let them sit for at least 3 days for the best taste.. Delicious, and they last for at least a week. A NC mountain recipe 👍

A tip you may want to do is before putting the cucumber slices in the jar, is to go ahead and slice the cucumbers. Then use your canning salt and sprinkle at least a tablespoon of salt over the slices in a bowl and toss around. Then line a colander with several paper towels and place the slices in and then place the colander inside a bowl. What this does is it draws out the excess water in the cucumber and will allow the vinegar to enter the cucumber and become a pickle better. Let them drain for at least an hour. Then fill your jar. Also, Yes, pickling spices will make it better tasting. Here is what is in pickling blends. I hope this helps. 😊 1 tablespoon black peppercorns. 1 cinnamon stick, broken into small bits. 1 tablespoon mustard seeds. 1 tablespoon coriander seeds. 1 tablespoon dill seed. 1 tablespoon allspice berries. 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes. 5 large bay leaves, crumbled.

Cutting the ends off helps them to pickle faster. Which you need when making refrigerator (which you did). The whole pickles have to cure for 9+ months in the cupboard before you can enjoy them. Also, Whole Foods sells a pickling spices mix in the "by the pound" section.

Cucumbers take longer to sprout because you didn't soak the seed for a few hours before you planted them. Cucumbers have a tougher husk and take longer. But no worries! As long as you don't let the water dry up they will be fine. :)

You should try fermenting pickles too. They can hold longer in the pantry if you guys end up with a good harvest. If you add oak, grape or other tannin filled leaves you don’t need to cut the ends off and it will keep the pickles crisper. And if you don’t have yeast make a sourdough starter. ProHome Cooks & Joshua Weissman have good videos on a starter. I made one at the beginning of the quar and have had good homemade sourdough and sourdough pizzas ever since

Tim, add a few sprinkles of red pepper flake to the bird seed. It doesn't bother the birds but the squirrels hate it.

For bread baking without yeast, make a sourdough starter. You could make pizza crust with that.

8 oz freshly shredded YELLOW CHEDDAR CHEESE 4 oz jar of PIMIENTOS 2-4 Tbsp MAYONNAISE (to taste) BLACK PEPPER (fresh ground pepper is nice). Shred the yellow cheddar into a mixing bowl, and definitely use freshly shredded cheese for this spread! Drain the pimientos and add them to the cheese. Add mayonnaise one tablespoon at a time and mix until the spread reaches the consistency you prefer. Add black pepper to taste. Freshly ground black pepper is ideal for pimento cheese spread.

My pediatrician recommended veggies over cereal for a first food. We did sweet potatoes and it was a lovely transition. You might ask your doctor for their opinion on doing veggies first. :)

I have a similar refrigerator pickle recipe but you add a little bit of sugar with the salt when you boil and peppercorns at the end. They are a favorite at my house

Don't worry too much on when to start weaning properly, you will know by your own intuition by Jackson's behaviour and being more hungry. 19 years ago, they told us to wean our daughter at 4 months with Cereal or Rusk. 7 years later they told us to wean our son at 6 months, there was no way we could wait until 6 months as he was very hungry all the time and wanting our food, we started weaning him at 5 months. We have a 9 week old little girl now and we can imagine we will be weaning her from the same time. You will know! Love Ceri x

As long as Jackson is happy and making any progress; he and you are doing just fine. Not every child follows what the experts say is the timeline. Just watching this vlogs you can tell that he is a very happy, healthy baby. The important things children need are love and guidance. I may have to try those pickles. I think the refrigerator kind are better than the actual "pickled" kind.

I pickle cucumbers from my garden every year. Usually 4 to 5 dozen quarts. The flowering end of the cucumber can make your pickles bitter. Don't remember why. That's just what grandma says.

I make pickled red onions very delicious! Equal parts of apple cider vinegar and mother's unfiltered apple cider vinegar and white sugar/brown sugar/or honey until it's to preferred taste. Refrigerate and enjoy! Very delicious.

Hey guys! Our family makes pickles too! Dill as well as bread and butter pickles! Also y'all should definitely make some homemade pimento cheese! We love to put it on hamburgers, hot dogs, and pimento cheese fries are the BEST! Just smear or dallop on fresh cooked fries and broil for minute or two. Dip in ranch for more zesty fun! We are very southern eaters and love us some pimento cheese! Back to pickles, my mom and husband had made these alcoholic shots called "picklebacks" this weekend, which is where you take a shot of Jameson whiskey then chase it with pickle juice! They liked them. I don't drink so I didn't want nothing to do with it! Anyway, thanks for posting videos every day! It gives me something to look forward to and watching your old vlogs help with being stuck in the house right now! Just wanted to let y'all know I appreciate what y'all are doing!!

I work at a daycare and I swear kids are really grumpy/unsettled before they grow or are learning new skills. I have never seen pimento cheese in the stores where I live in Canada. Try again in a few months! He might just not be ready yet. 😀 Also my niece really liked the cereal cookies at six/seven months

We skipped cereals for both our boys since they are just empty calories. We started with orange and yellow veggies, then fruits, then greens, then reds, then blues. I only added baby oatmeal once babies had all the colors and just to make a desert for them as a night filler.

Publix has their own pizza dough in the bakery/deli section, which Instacart can deliver in case you guys can’t find yeast. We buy the dough and make homemade pizza often, but looking forward to making dough from scratch soon. Thanks for keeping us entertained (especially during quarantine)!

For my pimento cheese I use, 8ounces of Sharp cheddar, 8 ounces of Mild Cheddar, a little seasoning salt, diced pimentos, and enough mayo to make it as creamy as I like it. Its so yummy.

Love all your cooking segments and thought I'd offer some advice! 1. When all you need is smashed garlic (not sliced or carefully chopped), don't bother peeling each clove first. Just smash each entire clove (skin and all) either with the heel of your palm (trust me, it works!) or with the flat of your knife like Tim did here. The clove kind of just automatically peels itself. Huge timesaver! 2. Jenn- try "choking up" on your knife when cutting, as in holding it farther up the handle closer to the blade. Ideally, you'll the blade between your thumb and index finger, like you're about to swipe a credit card. You can cut faster, safer, and more precisely this way. 3. Also Jenn- when you're cutting, try to do "the claw" with your left hand holding the food. You can find lots of simple tutorials on KZbin for how to do this- it's a foundational knife skill. Most important part is to curl your fingertips away from the knife blade. Again, faster and safer- it's virtually impossible to cut yourself this way.

One of the cues they are ready to eat is when they can sit upright on their own, which is usually around 6 months :) Have you guys looked into Baby Led Weaning? The cookbook has an intro and is really helpful!
