The reason the axle was moving so much is because those outside chains that act as the trailing arms were welded when the suspension had no load put onto it so when the vehicle was set on the ground the distances between the ends of the chain decreased (as the axle was raised closer to the body of the vehicle) which caused all the tension you originally had to loosen and that allowed the axle to start swaying back and forth causing that rear steer effect. I say you should try and Re-weld the outer chains while the vehicle is resting on the ground

put a turnbuckle in places to tighten it up.
@Stoney3K Жыл бұрын
The rear axle was basically hanging loose underneath the car (or conversely, the car was just sitting on the rear axle with its weight). The chains were not really limiting the axle's movement in any direction, particularly sideways. I wonder if they could re-design this with springs and dampers with the axle still hanging would work better.
@AndrewTSq Жыл бұрын
Talking about suspensions, would be cool to see a Formula 1-style mass damper experiment. Now its forbidden in F1, but its basicly a weight that moves in the opposite direction of the suspension, which balances out the forces more or less so the car just eats every bump with ease.
@thatguyalex2835 Жыл бұрын
Wait, you mean mass damper, as in the nearly 700 tonne (700 tons) spherical weight inside of the Taipei 101 tower, which allow the supertall building to sway in the wind? They use smaller versions of that mass damper in cars? Way cool, my dude.

If you replace the centre chain with a super stiff coil spring, then put some springs connecting the two chains on the left and right (to keep the axle in tension) you might be able to make that suspension system be "usable"

@@SaraMorgan-ym6ue Nice to see a woman car enthusiast here. :) I am a guy, and was never into cars until becoming a teen in the early/mid-2010s with Top Gear UK. Jeremy Clarkson ruined the show's reputation (he was misogynistic, rude to others, and even punched Piers Morgan, a BBC producer) sadly, so since 2020 or so, I watch Garage 54 for car tomfoolery/experimental content. Garage 54 is Top Gear for the 2020s, but way better.

HERE'S AN IDEA for a project. REPLACE ALL SUSPENSION WITH SOLID BARS... THEN, fit small wheels with LARGE SUPER HIGH side walls tyres (off road type?) and UNDER-INFLATE the tyres just enough to give you a bump/rut 'Reducing feel'. So... COULD a car fitted with NO suspension and 'Squidgy tyres' give you a smooth/smooth-ish ride? It would be FUN to find out! 🤔😉🤣🤣🤣👌 😎🇬🇧

maybe next time try doing this with rope or cable, or just something that has a little bit of bounce to it, it might make the rigidity less of an issue. except for the side to side control bar, that should probably remain chained.

@pazsion Жыл бұрын
I don’t see it free floating like there’s a frame on the side the chains on the side don’t share the load at all. You’d probably need coil overs in the place of each chain segment. That way it’s all under some tension and control. Without the need for trailing arms bushings. Cut a hole and flip it, so the triangle doesn’t hit the ground. Steel stretches and the longer the chain the softer it feels.
