Its pretty awesome watching dune buggies with those tires in action. The "bouncing bomb" method works better. IE backspin. How you'd launch them like that though I'm not sure. The physics dictated that back spin generates a high pressure under the item in contact with the water. Forward spin in effect pulls it into the water and increases drag by loads. Bernoulli's principle and Barnes Wallis are the two potential starting points.

If you look up Barnes Wallis and the 'Dambusters' bouncing bomb from WW2, you'll see that it's backspin you need for best results. Which wouldn't be easy on that setup. I reckon a wide slick would work well though.

Then tell me how they do that in lake in middle of sand dunes with bikes and quads ? They put it in reverse ? No they dont .. it needs momentum same as speed
@Propan-Bhutan3 жыл бұрын
What you mean is those bombs were put in reverse because they needed the bomb to jump higher
@creepingjesus51063 жыл бұрын
@@Propan-Bhutan Yes, that's how it worked: like an underarm bowling motion. Which is why I say it wouldn't be easy with their screw setup. It could be done with reversed drive and a swinging arm or quadrant, but that's some involved engineering. However, if you want to fling a rotating cylindrical object a long way over the surface of water, it's well proven to work.

So your best option to launch a wheel at high speed is something like a straight road. Warning, the rim will probably dig into it though. The harder the surface, the less likely the oscillations will occur that you saw, but you have to worry about friction. If you dig into the road however, you will gain a lot of frictional force, so sometimes having a small surface area for contact can actually help (which is why spikes on tires exist). Basically, you want it to dig into the surface as much as possible without having said surface create a ramp that will launch it into the air

For the tire to skim across the water, it needs to be going 60+ mph or 100+ kph so that it is hydroplaning. So a greater distance over ground is needed for the tire to come up to full speed and all of extra rotational energy converted into horizontal speed. In the video the tire was still spinning faster than it was traveling across the ground and still kicking up a lot of sand before it reached the water. Once in the water, the horizontal speed was to low and the water just wraps around the tire and absorbs all the rotational energy. The best case would be a smooth tire which would skip over the water. As everyone knows, smooth tires are very dangerous for driving at high speed in the rain. Hit a puddle and the whole car loses contact with the ground and can spin out of control.
@billmeans44383 жыл бұрын

You can get the wheel to hover over thw water and go much further if you use a slick tire and a really grippy and smooth launch surface. The wheel must be moving forward without slipping (advance at the same rate as it's spinning) when it hits the water, otherwise it'll just dig into the water. Also it needs to have quite some speed
@maddoctorwhitson2 жыл бұрын
Haha... My friend used to do something similar with a bicycle wheel. He would take a 20" bicycle wheel, lock up its axel by tightening it all the way, and loosely, but firmly, fit the axel into a grid-powered drill. The wheel would spin up to full RPM, then the axel would slip from the drill's grip, causing the wheel to launch super fast onto his neighbor's property toward their house. He didn't give a shit, and it was hilarious to witness.
@rootbrian48153 жыл бұрын
A few popped wheels, a skimming wheel and a few sand spitters. As I expected. LOL Anyone close to the wake definitely got soaked!
@jacobprogramz3 жыл бұрын
Also, it is skipping over the sand (most likely) because of the fact the sand easily displaces, creating small ramps, the tire shoots up and loses traction. Using a different surface, and making sure there is a small gap between the wheel and that surface on release, will probably give you the highest acceleration and end velocity, and the wheel could go further over the water with a greater horizontal velocity

Make sure the rims are as solid as possible and offer the greatest amount of support for the centripetal force. The reason why land-speed records use machined, solid aluminum wheels are because they are able to withstand the massive centripetal force. If you are planning to go high speed and don't want the equivalent of a massive grenade, make sure the wheels you are using keep majority of the mass away from the rim, and stay far, far away from people.

@kellypg3 жыл бұрын
An off the shelf tractor tire would probably work the same, if not better, and be more stable and less likely to explode since it's made like that from the factory
@hyperthermogenic3 жыл бұрын
Maybe try some speed-rated tires and find some industrial-strength rubber adhesive to bond the V blocks to the tire instead of making weak spots in the tires with screws and bolts. Then re-balance the tire. Also, possibly configure the V blocks in chevron patterns like the bow of a boat maybe that would reduce the bow wake in front of the tire as its hits the water. Just my 2 cents worth.
@mariusd59132 жыл бұрын
The reason the wheel cannot pick up speed is because you spin it up, charge with rotational potential energy, but when you let it go, the wheel itself is at 0km/h, now you need to use some of the rotational potential energy to accelerate the wheel and its mass. Lots of rotational energy is then lost. You will have to spin the wheel and fire it forward at high speed.
