There needed to be an air seal between the hood and the air intake. That much gap was allowing the wind to blow around the air intake instead of building any kind of pressure. There should have been some kind of a gasket between the two, maybe a foam donut or something. If you brought the blue intake hose through the hood, you could seal around that with some duct tape.

@Randomii6668 ай бұрын
Yeah the mounting holes on the scoop and the gaps between the scoop and the hood and intake pipe are a big issue. The idea would be to take in large amount of air, while compressing it down through a smaller diameter opening, which creates pressure and accelerates the airflow. As the scoop was basically a funnel, it would had needed to be airtight. No holes and a seal between the scoop and the hood. And we never really saw if there was a seal between the hole in the hood and the intake pipe, if not, the whole scoop would had been pointless. But as it had holes and no airtight seal, they were basically just blowing air around, but not building up any pressure
@thegrimreefer31858 ай бұрын
@@SwapBlogRU If it was properly sealed there should have been a gasket of some kind on the hood and there would have been a pan on/under the plumbing the MAF was in before they put the screen over it. Additionally, 0 to any speed really isn't relevant to ram air intakes. There's little effect until at least 30 mph. So roll on testing would have been more representative. Granted, the amount of drag a scoop that size will cause will outweigh the benefits and without a seal, most of that air is just being funneled under the car through the engine bay.

The point is a turbo car computer and sensors are built to measure and adapt to pressurized air. A naturally aspirated car can only go up to 1 ATM and will lean out after. So you compare the car power output running at slow speeds vs high speeds. It doesn't matter that it's slower than stock, you're measuring the difference at speeds. That of course won't help their no seal intake design though.

There is high-pressure air just above the bonnet and low pressure air 5 - 10 cm above the bonnet, you need high pressure air. So the stock scoop is in the high-pressure range and the make shift scoop is way above the high pressure into low pressure which is why its not boosting, the big scoop will have turbulent air inside and not only that it will have big drag also. If you had lots of smaller scoops on the bonnet leading into the hole it will make for better ram air. This is why fast cars have scoops on the sides and top of the car to get the high pressure air running along the body.

This would be better suited to a normally aspirated car that has also had bigger injectors (to help the ECU inject more fuel in when air pressure increases). Also, there is a HUGE gap between hood scoop/hood and air intake. To do a 'Ram Air' type design, you NEED a fully sealed intake (as you got on Kawasaki's legendary ZZR1100/600 motorbikes, and all other 'Ram Air' designed engine air intakes since. It's no good having all that air collected, channeled down into a smaller and smaller area for it to then flow out before it reaches the inlet manifold. Ideally you'd want a wide mouthed 'Horn'/'Trumpet' design that squashes the large amount of air into a smooth unobstructed tube that reduces into a smaller and smaller area so that the air pressure increases as it enters the engine, like a natural 'Turbo'/'Supercharger' (the higher the vehicle speed, the higher the air pressure at front of vehicle). Also, collecting air into the wide mouthed 'Trumpet' inlet should ideally be where air pressure is highest, ie around the front bumper/grill area. 🤔😏 Maybe a future project - 'Ram Air' Lada? (Because even the old BUT FAST ZZR1100's were carburetta fed) 🤔😏 😎🇬🇧
