This song is timeless. The arrangement is stunning. And Marueen McGovern's lead and vocal harmonies are sublime. It will sound as fresh in 500 years from now as it did when it was first released 50 years ago.

I think there were few big Irwin Allen productions that Maureen McGovern didn't get to create a haunting, foreboding, and forlorn, but at the same time 1970s "hopeful" theme song for. What an amazing talent and epic career spanning an entire age of big cinema. I think one of Allen's only big disaster movies of the period she didn't do something for was "When Time Ran Out" -- but she did do William Holden's final movie before his passing from cancer, "The Earthling", with Ricky Schroeder... in which he played a man dying of the same cancer... almost an homage???... I love the epics of the 1970s -- they just cannot recreate that kind of cinema any more. Love Maureen McGovern.

Holden’s last movie was the movie he did after The Earthling the Blake Edwards comedy S.O.B.

On this day in 1975 {Feb. 8th} Maureen McGovern performed "We May Never Love Like This Again" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... One month earlier on Jan. 25th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #83 and spent 4 weeks on the Top 100... The song won the 1974 Academy Award for 'Best Original Song" {from the movie 'The Towering Inferno'}... Two years earlier she performed the Academy Award winning song "The Morning After" {'The Poseidon Adventure'}...

Don't invite Maureen McGovern to sing at your party. She goes on a boat it sinks she goes in a building it burns. She's lucky she escaped both times.

Wait...THIS won Best Song? I just saw "The Towering Inferno" for the first time, and was struck by how incredibly AWFUL this song is. Terrible, ludicrious lyrics. Just hysterically bad.

Remember, the songs that usually won the oscar were the biggest hit, not the best song. Doesn’t happen anymore because movies rarely contain hit songs nowadays.

What you see is also a reflection of you and what you project onto it I find it beautiful, inspiring, fun and 70s sappy which makes it even better, I love it...one's treasure is another's trash I guess

It’s the 1970’s, and this style of love song was common, you only have to listen to The Carpenters which had a very similar style, sort of lounge/torch singing.

@@geoffrogerson9937 The song from _The Poseidon Adventure,_ written by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn earned an Academy Award back in 1973. Maureen McGovern's debut recording of that song went all the way to number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Movie maker Irwin Allen repeated the formula for his next blockbuster, _The Towering Inferno._ While the songwriters did in fact earn another Oscar for their efforts, Maureen's recording did not have the same success on the charts as her debut song.
