"The Morning After" is a song written by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn for the 1972 film "The Poseidon Adventure," winning "Best Original Song" at the 45th Academy Awards in March 1973. Following this success, Maureen McGovern recorded a single version that became a No. 1 hit in the US for two weeks during August 1973, with Gold record sales. Billboard ranked it as the No. 28 song for 1973.
The song was written in March 1972 by 20th Century Fox songwriters Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn, who were asked to write the love theme for "The Poseidon Adventure" in one night. The finished product was called "Why Must There Be a Morning After?" but changes by the record label resulted in the more optimistic lyric "there's got to be a morning after".
In the film the song is performed by the character of Nonnie, played by Carol Lynley, but actually sung by the vocal double Renee Armand. It appears twice: during a warm-up rehearsal and then later during the New Year's Eve party early in the film, before the passengers must escape the sinking wreck. The title appears in the end credits as "The Song from The Poseidon Adventure." The label on the single lists the song as "The Morning After (Song from the Poseidon Adventure}."
The Morning After
(Song from "The Poseidon Adventure")
(music and lyrics by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn)
There's got to be a morning after
If we can hold on through the night
We have a chance to find the sunshine
Let's keep on looking for the light
Oh, can't you see the morning after
It's waiting right outside the storm
Why don't we cross the bridge together
And find a place that's safe and warm
It's not too late
We should be giving
Only with love can we climb
It's not too late
Not while we're living
Let's put our hands out in time
There's got to be a morning after
We're moving closer to the shore
I know we'll be there by tomorrow
And we'll escape the darkness
We won't be searching any more
There's got to be a morning after
(There's got to be a morning after)
There's got to be a morning after
(There's got to be a morning after)
There's got to be a morning after
(There's got to be a morning after)
There's got to be a morning after
(There's got to be a morning after)
There's got to be a morning after

🎉 Retro movie 🍿 greetings from coastal Mississippi. I saw this at the Drive in theater in 1972. One of the best disaster movies. Poseidon is a timely treasure to be enjoyed. Stay away from the poor remake. The music is what makes it golden. I met Maureen years ago. ❤😂🎉 Enjoy the cruise on the SS Poseidon

My dad and I had an annual tradition of watching this film while celebrating New Year's together, and he always loved this song. Would definitely count it amongst his favorites. He passed away earlier this year, and now this is my first New Year's Eve without him. Wish I could have gotten just one more with him, but then again, I think I'd always want just one more even if I got my wish. I miss you, Dad. More than I could describe. I'll keep the tradition going as long as I can. I haven't forgotten the times we shared. Here's to fond memories, and the morning after.

This movie was such a gem. In the early 70's it was one of the most talked about, watched films of the time. An amazing all-star cast that really delivered memorable performances (esp. Shelly Winters). I was only around 10 y.o. but remember it vividly.

Yes that's right here's got to be a morning after if we can hold on through the night we have a chance to find the sunshine let's keep on looking for the light. Oh can't you see the morning after why don't we cross the bridge together and find the place that's safe and warm it's not too late not while we're living let's put our hands out in time. There's got to be a morning after we're moving closer to the shore. We'll escape the darkness we won't be searching anymore. There's got to be a morning after.there's got to be a morning after, there's got to be a morning after, there's got to be a morning after.Yes this songs lyrics are very well put for positive reinforcement to continue to move like the song of Movin' on ,Movin' on.

this movie is 1972, came to Spain in 1974 and then I saw the new with its special effects. I prefer the former with its low budget and interpretation of leslie Nielsen, Ernest Borgnine and Gene Hackman great. Maurice MvGovern puts the icing to be an excellent voice and beautiful music, Thank you

All the stations used to play songs like this back in the early 80's. I was probably about 5 when I heard this type of music. Not sure why I would love this stuff at such an early age, but it kept with me through today. I haven't heard this in well over 20 years when I heard it on this AM station we have here and finally jotted some lyrics down to look up here.

Nathan Cole Im a PISCES born to like music starting with Partridge Family TV Show 1970 - 1974. I was so into music I went to Stadium Concerts at age 12. I remember those 70s girls having the hots for those Long Hair Rock Stars. Saw Rolling Stones 4 times Led Zeppelin 2 times, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Neil Young Doobie Brothers, Reo Speedwagon, The Who, The Clash, Allman Brothers, Oringal Lynyrd Skynyrd. 1 thing that sucks for me I still have my IRISH Freckels on my Face. Im so IRISH my middle name is PATRICK. Not only crazy about Music also My IRISH HERITAGE. AN IRISH GIRL IS THE BEST DRINKING BUDDY I GUY COULD HAVE. I also learned its not just IRISH & SCOTTISH Born with Red Hair & Freckels

l bought the 45, played it to death, bought another copy. It's not everyday you feel dedication like that to a song, a concept, a philosophy. The lessons I learned from films like The Poseidon Adventure is not to lie down passively in the face of adversity and die. Fight for something that really has meaning, not a new pair of Nikes or your team winning a Superbowl game. We all should be exposed to such clear morality tales early on in life. If you're lucky, they may help shape and define you into a person you're proud of becoming.

Lillo Craparo I know it wasn't her that 1 girl looked like Susan Dey from Partridge Family TV Show 1970 - 1974. With all Channels on Cable & Satillete TV you would think they could find room for these 60s 70s sitcoms, Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver, Beverly Hillbillies, Patty Duke, Addams Family, Flinstones, Happy I was a 70s kid, I was so crazy about Rock N Roll Music I went to Stadium Concerts at age 12. I Loved those 70s girls were hot for those Long Hair Rock Stars. I was kinda of a ladies man with my IRISH Freckels on my Face. I like my Music as much as I like my IRISH HERITAGE. AN IRISH GIRL IS A GUYS BEST DRINKING BUDDY. YOU DONT SCARE ME I WAS RAISED BY AN IRISH MOTHER. I AM A LEPRECHAUN I DONT DATE HUMANS. KISS ME IM IRISH ERIN GO BRAGH - IRELAND FOREVER I did learn 1 thing its not only IRISH & SCOTTISH BORN WITH RED HAIR & FRECKELS. FRECKELS IN IRELAND ARE CALLED ANGEL KISSES. Sorry about all IRISH Stuff. Just wanna say not all IRISH are DRUNKS
