Many folks who were alive at the time hated the disco era influence on so much of pop culture (similar to the mid and late 90's with rap /hip hop ) was only nine in 79 at as a pre teen kid absolutely ate up the whole disco pop culture ..which why i find this song sooooo darn nostalgic and instantly feel good hearing it . actually most of those now older folks that hated the disco era would probably take it all back right now and trade in it for whatever the hell this currently era of pop culture will be remembered as

In my opinion this is one of the best theme songs for a TV show ever. "Angie" initially did well in the ratings, I think they should have kept the two dating, rather than marry them off so quickly. They should have given the show more time, after all they did move it from it's original time period. Funny how some shows did get more time and chances than others.

@@tommym7646 Disco by itself was overly exaggerated and its exaggerations lead to the backlash that erode disco and gave birth to its daughters: post-disco, euro-disco, etc. But some musical characteristics of disco also enhanced contemporaneous genres: AOR, pop, pop rock, even some prog rock songs benefitted from disco. And of course even who couldn't, didn't or wasn't supposed to be on disco got some elements of it. And now, 40 years have passed and I wonder what it rock fans of that time, that fought for disco's demise, would think of today's music. After all, "Different Worlds" is a lovely song.

Heard this on the radio yesterday and was blown away because it gave me one of those "I forgot this even existed" moments. I don't think I've listened to it for 35 years. I knew it was from 1979 and was on a TV show, but didn't know who the singer was. Maureen crossed my mind, but I figured it was Nicolette Larson. Splendid singing, splendid lyrics! There were plenty of problems in 1979, but at least there were songs on the radio that spoke of love. Does any song on the charts today even mention love? So sad, I try not to cry about how badly the pop culture today compares to the pre-1980s. Different worlds INDEED.

Geez! This was/is an EPIC piece! McGovern became such a huge success in the 1970s, creating so many hit theme songs for some of the top Hollywood movies and TV series of the time. Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, Superman The Movie, The Earthling, Angie, Ice Castles, Airplane!, Singer at Party, ... on and on. She has that vulnerably haunting mixed with confidently hopeful sound that so reflected the 'emotional culture' of the1970s for me. Her voice really made Irwin Allen's 1970s productions, among other writer/director successes, endure long past the age. An under-rated period of storytelling creativity that musical wonders like McGovern give me a sense of nostalgia to go back to, every now and then. They just can't make the big movies, and big musical poets and performers, today. Not that today's are bad, necessarily -- they have their wonders and greats, too. A few times a year, I seek out certain memorable talents from the age -- Maureen McGovern and Melanie Safka and the like -- brilliant.
