It completely baffles me as to why a British themed Gordon Ramsey place would NOT serve the fish and chips in the authentic way. How could he possibly have approved this fish on a stick with chips that are not really chips as we know them. Sadly lacking the true fish n chip experience to me.

The audience isn't British people, it's Americans. Just like Indian restaurants in the UK don't sell food designed for the Indian palate (in general). But Ramsay is one for buggering about with food anyway, so he's never going to sell "authentic" food without adding his own twist. Even assuming he has anything to do with the recipes...

As a Brit watching this, I feel like I understand a bit better why Italians get so upset by international versions of their cuisine. @@TheMagicGeekdom The 'Gary Eats' videos are excellent and give you a good idea of the true quality of a restaurant. Most of the restaurants with Gordon Ramsey's name attached to them or others with a celebrity's name are dreadful, with a few honourable exceptions. The food tends to be mediocre at best and overpriced. Although Ramsey is a brilliant chef when he actually does the cooking, he clearly is in it purely for the money and doesn't care that his name is being trashed by sub-standard cooking. If you come back to the UK find family run businesses, whether it is a chippy or an up market restaurant. Gary Eats recently reviewed a family run fish and chip shop that had been going for decades in South London and it was one of the best he had ever been to.

As a Canadian that loves the UK, I find this completely unsurprising. I have only found one place here in Ottawa that comes close to proper chips and that is a place called the Heart and Crown (Barrhaven location). It is actually an Irish pub as opposed to an English pub. The fish was quite good as well and the tartar sauce was good but not outstanding. Our local Scottish restaurant is called The Glen, in Stittsville. Their fish is outstanding, as is their tartar sauce. Their fries are, well, fries. They're good, but they aren't the wonderful, triple-cooked chips that I dream about. :) The Glen also has the best steamed Haggis I have ever had. At least my craving for good pub chips will be satisfied soon as my wife and I are heading to England for a wedding on November 1st. I will have two solid weeks to gobble down lots of yummy chips!! Then I will have to wait until Next May before indulging again when we go to Scotland for three weeks.

Another great video as always. I love watching your videos. Over here in the UK we have fish fingers, which are usually coated in breadcrumbs, I think in America you call them fish sticks. That fish looks like they got giant fish fingers and battered them. The "curry sauce" was nothing like the typical chip shop curry sauce. The battered sausages over here use the same batter as the fish, and are plain pork sausages. They are not herby sausages coated in corndog style batter. Can we start a petition to get Gordon Ramsey kicked out of the UK for the travesty he is trying to pass off as British fish and chips over in America? 😂😂

Where I grew up in Wales the Chippy staple was Cod, far too many chips, curry sauce and battered sausage (battered because if you saw saw the sausage you'd 'no way I'm eating that!). For some reason the UK chippies like try try and put everything in batter like black pudding and spam which I can safely say are both disgusting in batter. I like black pudding but cooked properly e.g fried with bacon and fired or poached egg on top as the runny yolk combats the dry nature of black pudding. The peppery nature of black pudding works well with saltiness of the bacon so no seasoning needed and the egg brings them all together.

The way it seems to work (and in the UK too) is take a celebrity chef's name, stick it over the restaurant and charge four times as much as it should cost. In the case of fish and chips, it's not rocket science. Like any speciality meal, prepare it a few dozens of times and you should be getting it right. If you can't, then go walkies. Not of your own volition, either.

@stevieinselbyАй бұрын
I'm not in the least bit surprised that this was a disappointment. It's clearly aimed at an American audience who know that fish & chips is a thing but don't really know what it should be. From the garish décor to the loud music to the menu, this is not even attempting to recreate an _authentic_ fish & chips experience. Unfortunately a lot of celebrity chefs like to cash in on their name but don't have any interest in ensuring it's a top quality service. Some years ago, Jamie Oliver launched a chain of restaurants in the UK called "Jamie's Italian", and they were _awful_ - poor food, overpriced, lacklustre service, and nothing at all like a genuine Italian restaurant. That said, it isn't just about celebrities cashing in, there's definitely an element here about trying to cater to American tastes and not shock them too much by going way outside their comfort zone - and I'm sure that most Chinese/Indian/Thai/Mexican/Lebanese/etc visitors to the UK would say the same on visiting a restaurant serving their home cuisine in the UK, genuine authentic examples are rare! Your best bet for finding a good chippy in the US, I would say, would be to find a town (preferably near the coast) with a significant British ex-pat community, and _someone_ will have set up a decent little independent place for the locals!
@johnheaton1729Ай бұрын

I think there are a few possible issues, my first thought is that i'm not really a fan of the “celeb” branded stuff when it's a more “normal” place. I'm sure Gordon is an amazing Chef, and if you like fancy food, his fancy restaurants are probably great, but when i've seen his fish and chips, burger and pizza places, they've all looked pretty shocking. I'm sure technically they're good and the quality of the food is good, but they seem to suffer from taking something that should be basic and simple, like pizza, burgers or fish and chips, and trying to “improve” it or make it fancier because it's got his name attached to it. The other possible issue is that maybe the fish and chip place, in particular, just has to cater to the local customers, i don't know but maybe they tried something more authentic, and it didn't sell well?
@bill-wd7zsАй бұрын

@Chris_GY1 Fellow Grimberian here, I remember going on a school trip around the docks in the early 70s. My grandad used to be a filleter near the old pontoon before moving to Bluecrest until he retired. My Nanna worked at Findus before moving to Ross's.

Yeah I think I will give that a miss if I'm in the states.Those 'chips' look rank. I suspect Ramsey puts his name to it only... Has zero input bar taking a pay cheque.

I popped into a diner last week in Miami and it had fish and chips on the menu. Really didn’t taste as good as UK

Sorry to hear that, but also not terribly surprised.

As far as I'm concerned Tabasco is a vinegar beverage.

The exterior screams tourist trap and I'm honestly surprised Ramsey would put his name on a place like that.

To be fair Gordon Ramsay probably has nothing to do with this place and just signs his name to it.
@TheMagicGeekdomАй бұрын
That is possible.

@@TheMagicGeekdom A bit like Harry Ramsden's fish and chip chain restaurants in the UK. Harry died in the 1960's and the name is supposed to give some kind of elevation (along with the prices charged). I have also seen frozen Harry Ramsdens items in a run of the mill frozen food store, so I think it sounds like Gordon Ramsey's 'brand' isn't much different in that respect as they are selling off the back of a famous name.

Personally I don't know why someone who isn't a fish and chipper restaurant runner doesn't open their own fish and chips shop,they are literally everywhere in the UK,too many of them for my liking and enough enough other choices for fast food other than kebab maybe. What is it with all these big names or corporations when so many people from all over the world especially in many non western countries or poorer countries have the best street food like Mexico,Thailand,India,Italy,Turkey and so many others have the best cuisine done small street sellers.These big corporations take over and ruin the cuisine for everyone

I thought the whole point of having a british themed fish and chips restaraunt in the US is so that Americans can ACTUALLY try authentic british fish and chips..... I find it odd that Ramsay signed off on this.
