We Modded our MK8 GTI Before Signing the Papers

The long-awaited MK8 GTI is here! In this video, we went to the port to check out our car weeks before launch with Charles (Humble Mechanic). He had the opportunity to check out his MK8 Golf R, which he will be picking up in the coming months. We then went back up to Lindsay VW, where we performed the PDI, modded our MK8 GTI, then had an awesome meetup.
Finally, we hit a tire retread on the way home, so we inspect our car for damage

Toyota, Mitsubishi and Subaru did back in the day. Now they just make dreadful cars. All the German marques have always had high level of enthusiast engagement. The only thing that's comparable is Ford.

@Zenkat yeah you’re 1 example of a here say story doesn’t represent the brands motives. I used to work for vw. In their engineering and design books they would explicitly state how they design their cars to support aftermarket modifications and make design cues to have an appeal if the vehicle was lowered. They put on southern worthesë and design concept cars solely to wow their enthusiasts. Vwag has the biggest aftermarket and tuning following.

@Zenkat another fringe case. MQB is a beloved platform and has an absolutely massive cult following for being some of the best cars on the market in stock form, and a plethora of cosmetic/performance aftermarket support. it wouldn’t have turnout out like that if VW kicked enthusiasts to the curb.

@Zenkat sounds like you have a Lemon. Every Manufacturer has one that they produced. Not every single one will have it. Maybe talk to a lawyer and see what they can do for you. I had a Mk7 that I raped all the time, never had an issue. I guess that’s life and life’s not fair.

@Zenkat I’ve had 5 mk7’s and probably double that in mk4’s to mk6’s. One of them was a lemon. I work at Toyota and see lemons all the time. Like I said your one experience doesn’t represent the brand. Look up the facts of vw having the biggest enthusiast following. I’m not arguing this when there are stats to show. @@str8ballin297 Maybe. I absolutely hated the 8 at first. Now I tolerate it and think it's quite ok (only on the GTI and R versions). But the looks of the 7 seem more agressive and even the lights look more "futuristic" than the tamed 8. I think the 7 will be the last good looking before all the EV futuristic alien looks take over. I got a 7 recently so I may be biased. I'm afraid of 2 things: either it will become a collectors item like the mk2, or it will drop in price due to the release of the 8.

My 2021 VW Arteon has the exact same steering wheel with the touch buttons and I actually love it. Also the climate controls are touch in my car too and it really isn't that bad once you get used to using it.

Watching this video a month ago had me so jazzed for this car! Watching all the GTI's at the Port of Baltimore was awesome. I was so jealous of everyone who was waiting for their beautiful GTI's. Now a month later and with a stroke of luck I was able to get my own GTI Pomelo Yellow Autobahn! It blows my mind to think that my car was at that port in the video waiting for me to come and get it! If I told myself a month ago what was going to go down I would not have believed it! Lol!

They also delivered an exact copy of your yellow GTI to Lindsay, except it was DSG, saw the color in person and I snagged it immediately! Absolutely love the mk8 so far; yes the buttons are futzy, but you get used to them and the underlying tech is super cool. The jury is still out on the DSG for me, but I've always owned manuals, so thought I'd give DSG a try for once, time will tell.

Replacing the small factory paddles with genuine carbon fiber units improves the DSG Experience.

On the MK7 GTI's the UNI DSG TCU tune fixes the DSG jerkiness especially 1st n 2nd gear transitions. Facts. Not sure how bad the MK8 is but keep in mind!

MK8 has no jerkiness with the DSG, but the delay off the line is still there, and pretty bad with stop/start

Before you put the lug nut covers on you need to torque the nuts because they are not torqued from the factory. I did not see you do that in the video, so be careful and torque them. Theres a list of things you need to do in the PDI list and thats one of them. Source: I work at Volkswagen.

That color looks similar to BMW 'Phoenix Yellow.' at least on my phone it does. So happy you guys went with the manual trans. All I drive as fast at the DSG is, it just doesn't 'do it' for me. Having turned wrenches at 3 VW stealerships in the past I'm familiar with all the PDI stuff, but it was still cool to see the port and all the operations that go on before the car would reach the consumer. the suspension seems high because of the transport protection device, usually the car PDI would take care of it

I would like to suggest something like a 245/40/18 tire. .5” extra ground clearance and less fender gap. A bit better ride and IMO better looks with a fatter tire. Then you can lower it a tad and still get over speed bumps while having a nice stance. Just need to roll the front fenders.

Not as big a fan of the Mk8 as the Mk7, but it's great that the aftermarket/enthusiast support for this platform is alive and well. For all it's quirks, it's still a GTI at the end of the day. Looking forward to seeing them on the roads and throwing some new fellow GTI owners some waves.

The Transport mode also limits maximum engine RPM to 2500 RPM, disables carnet, and other infotainment features, ACC and a few other things.

I would never swap mk7.5 to mk8 they cheaped on everything and the mk8 is ugly. BTW that golf will get it's correct height after the pre sale inspection. They will remove transport blocks from under the front shocks.

Never thought I would say this, but honestly I think once my Edge Sport is paid off, I'm gonna get a GTI or a Golf R. I adore how fast they can be made with simple mods, and how well they ride. Every day that passes by, is a day we lose more and more cars we can actually tune and play with. Seems like VW are the only ones anymore. VW, one model of Subaru...can't really think of anything else as I don't want to even bother with FWD.

I am not a fan of the new grill/ bumper. Looks like a big mouth bass. I want to see a high performance electric version. BTW, my MkV GTI is now close to breaking the 500 hp ( 487) . WTH the LSD installed , the dreaded torque steer the GTI is known for isn’t really an issue. I left foot brake to manage it as well. Overall the golf series has been an ongoing success. Next to his MkVII, the MkVIII looks like a 4x4!

Bought my last GTI with 12k miles, and will make weird suspension noises on bumps, took it to my shop and they discovered the full set of shipping blocks. No wonder I got a good deal on the car, the previous owner thought the car rode like shit.

You know that that won't be the actual ride height. The struts will have transport spacers in the coils. Lol or shipping blocks just got to the bit in the video

Cool! It's great having a new car but I suggest taking a ball peen hammer and putting a big dent somewhere in the hood or a fender just to get it over with, then you can drive worry free!

I came close to buying the 2022 autobahn week before last until I popped the hood and saw the absurd amount of overspray under the hood and inner finder lip. And the doors didn’t have that good quality thud sound when closing and opening. Hopefully the R will have a better attention to detail quality.

Funny you mention drilling holes in your front bumper. I requested them not to do this to my 2019 Golf R (which they followed my request and didn't mount the front plate - they ziptied it to the grill), low and behold though the rear doesn't have a mounting plate and now has holes drilled into it lol.

Back in the days, the Golf MK5 had a Aluminume Subframe also on the 1,4 /55 KW-Version.....with the MK6, they deleted this and added the steel version.
