Rebecca Henderson argues that the reason why capitalism and climate change are so interlinked is that we need the former to save us from the latter.
Could reformed capitalism be our only hope?
Watch the full debate at iai.tv/video/capitalism-and-t...
With the world's largest corporations responsible for 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions, many, particularly on the left, have taken it for granted that climate change and capitalism are intimately linked. But with corporations and the right backing action to reduce emissions, the assumption is under challenge. Former governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney went so far as to say that 'the goal of net zero is the greatest commercial opportunity of our time.' And according to the World Economic Forum, the value of green bonds traded could soon hit $2.36 trillion. So proponents of capitalism argue the very economic system that instigated climate change is also the way to end it.
Should we conclude that there is no necessary connection between capitalism and climate change? Will this realisation result in a shift on the left away from green politics and climate change and back to heartland socialist goals? Or is the link between climate change and capitalism essential and the claims of bankers and conservatives to be in favour of reducing emissions insincere and illusory?
This event was produced in association with Audio Note.

Language is how things are complicated, capital, if money, was translated by gold, on to pieces of decorated paper. Today a piece of decorated bills, represent carbon. What is the total carbon weight of a bill of money, because we use an IMF of currency in petro dollar amounts? It’s so simple when everyone is paid to pollute and paid to point fingers. Matrix much?

Yes. Anyone invested in nuclear energy and its supply chains are going to make a lot of money. Just need a pinch of political courage to make it happen. NE is only optional if we are ok with de-industrializing. AKA increasing deaths due to exposure and hunger.

@@garygtmm That’s why promoting a greener society without nuclear energy is a half-measure and ESG is a scam that hardly does anything to actively save the environment.

Notably different claims that we 'need' capitalism, or the world won't be saved 'without' capitalism. It's almost like if Capitalism doesn't get its share of the profit of saving the world privatized it won't let it be done. Capitalism isn't going to initiate a carbon tax on itself, and if it did that'd be more social democracy with capital here or there than anything. In short: Booo to the title of this and to listening that attentively to Rebecca Henderson's fawning view of the status quo.

I'm listening and so we NEEED to regulate capitalism and change their incentive structure so much that they'll maximize their profits by doing good, because no one other than capitalism can marshal resources - Which is made up Reagonite hogwash.

Sadly I think this is just hot air - expecting regulation when consolidated capital has the ability to shape policy is a pipe dream. It must be smashed entirely. We can still use markets and innovation without private consolidation of capital/resources.

The whole concept of profit is only derived from the deliberate and forceful creation of a large working class. Feudalism is to blame for that, then the capitalist took advantage of that ready made class system, without that class system capitalism could not exist. The hierarchies of feudalism and capitalism are pyramid shaped, while every natural hierarchy of competence is a bell curve (IQ bell curve) with few at the top and bottom and the majority in the middle. pyramid hierarchies are artificial and integral to capitalism/profit, there has to be a very large base of low paid workers in a capitalist hierarchy in order for profit to be generated. Profit is not possible in a natural (bell curve) hierarchy because there aren't enough people at the bottom to skim labor value from. capitalism is not contrary to feudalism, capitalism is the sniveling rat that feudalism gave birth to.

Exactly the opposite of this statement is true; in fact in all autocracies, whatever their form, the wealth of the nation is focussed on a lucky few. The Western ideal of democracy and capitalism is the only system in which the needs of the individual, including the individual right to ownership of stuff, are considered important even above the needs of the state. Recent decades have seen our liberal Western democracies drift away from this principle as politicians have increasingly become beholden to wealth. To go back to fairer times we need to vote to reverse the increasing political capture of the economy on behalf of big business, reduce the importance of capital over labour, and stop undermining the wages of our own workforce by importing low paid labour from abroad.

It strikes me as a bit odd that we are still talking about this. Germany is one example of how to blend socialism and capitalism, and the country has been a singular success story up until the 90s. Since then, Germany can serve as an object lesson on how too much eco-driven socialism leads to slow de-industrialisation. The USA have always been an object lesson into how too much unbridled capitalism leads to widespread social issues. So yes, Rebecca - I agree. A system such as Germany’s from 1950-1990 is one way to strike a productive balance. Let’s not pretend this is a new insight.

we need capitalism's propaganda about itself! "capitalism" ain't what it used to be... ya know... back in the last century... or the one before that. what we have now some call Neo-liberalism or late-stage capitalism. it's more like "financialism", wherein the process of crafting quick cuts of the action (in $$$s only, thank you very much) is far more valuable than the action itself. esp when that action is something tangible. not a good way to build & maintain a sustainable civilization... but who cares?

Just like the there is only one physics and one maths, there is only one economics. Other "so-called systems" like socialism or feudalism or oligarchies or theocracies or whatever are subject to the same economic laws as capitalism. What is different about capitalism is that it creates wealth, the other systems ultimately only destroy it. We must choose what sort of capitalism we want, not try to replace it with some fantastical political solution that will magically solve all our problems.
