In the spirit of Black History Month, I wanted to touch on a topic that is very near and dear to me - the representation of Blacks/African-Americans in medicine. Only 3% of doctors in the U.S. are Black compared to the national Black population of 13%. This disparity must be addressed.
I discuss some of my solutions, which include pipeline programs, mentorship, and institutional accountability. We must ALL play a part in the solution.

"You can only be what you think is possible" louder for those in the back because representation matters. And yessss- med schools need to do better at not just recruiting Black students, but also making sure the environments they bring Black students into are safe. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

This is a game changer to help combat the many health challenges that our Black Community face. We need more Black Doctors and nurses. Representation matters due to trust and deeper connection with clients.

I TRULY APPRECIATE ALL THE BLACK DOCTORS AND MED STUDENTS WHO HAVE SHARED THEIR STORIES!!! Becoming a doctor seemed impossible and I literally felt afraid to ask for advice and HOW to even become a doctor because I did not want to be doubted. It’s sad that as a woman of color that is literally the thought process..

I've been faced with many obstacles on my journey, including being told by a physician that I shouldn't become one. Im new to your channel, but I just subscribed. Awesome video! There's also the sad reality that some doctors are racist and, either willfully or ignorantly, misdiagnose and mistreat Black peoples' ailments. And that's the nicest way to put it.

Absolutely! There are racists in every field, medicine included. And we must call it out if and when we see and hear things because this affects the patients.

My city in has a lot of black American nurses just not doctors. One thing is our school offers college nursing programs to 11th and 12th graders so when they leave high school they already have some credit and understanding. So there is less black men in the medical field.

While we have failing public k-12 schools, it will be difficult to have more black doctors. What is needed is school choice. Parents send the kids to whatever school they want. Too many illegals in inner schools. So teachers are speaking Spanish while a black kid sits there. It’s not like they everywhere though.

Ill start by saying this isnt a slight.i love seeing us in a field like this.but.... A lot of black folks and im speaking black americans simply dont seek to be doctors. I mentor at a youth center for about 30 kids and most of them are black. We did a career day which i asked what they want to be when they grow up. Only 3 kids said a doctor. Of those 3 only 1 was black. It made me think of why. Well we went away from that aspiration when we let hip hop take over our culture in my opinion. We took on a culture of fast money versus smart money. We have the brains absolutley to do both but the smart money doesnt translate well with generations that grew up after the 80s. Whats crazy about the medical field is Many of the precedures we founded. But to say it racism as to why there is less black representation is an excuse for a bigger internal problem that only we can address. Think about it, hospitals get incentives specifically to hire black people, hbcu alumni, and especially black women. We call that getting help, so how is that racist? We need to stop that victim mentality and grind. The opportunities are all over, we just need to instill in our culture its VERY possible. Ive had doctors of all races, they were all the same pretty much because ive demanded the best care and not because of race. And i watched my wife almost die giving birth to our daughter, her doctor was a black woman and went to the same hbcu as her. She swore on getting a doctor that was black. I told her just get the best doctor no matter the race. Well She gave her too much of a medication that basically gave her additional challenges at birth. An asian doctor came in, reevaluated everything, then helped her out to get her back stable. I say all that to say the preference in medicine should be getting the best doctor and demanding the best care. Not just demanding sombody who looks like you. Also if you are aspiring to become a doctor, i applaud you. work your ass off to be the best you can. And once you make it like she said you should mentor the youth. But in all honestly, we need a cultural overhaul because right now our culture is one of victimhood and blaming everyone else for stuff we can control.

I think her ideas are okay. But we are not pointing out the systemic problem of privelege in the school system. The MCAT test needs to be cut from the curriculum. Alot of folks are not trying to open doors for folks. Its just the blank truth.

That’s really important to have doctors from the whole colour spectrum. Hopefully there are Indian (I mean origin red Indian) and Eskimo doctors too. Because many black people live in the hoods do they check that they don’t have gangster background or relations when entering Med school.

I think your missing the point, DIVERSITY! Who's affected by diversity BLACKS (and other minority races, which she included just in case you missed it 😉). However, she is representing her race as she has the right too. She's stating FACTS, some of which are stemmed from racism, in which she's providing a SOLUTION which is completely opposite of racism. Go troll somewhere else....
