This is the first public lands cleanup of the year organized by the crew from plsbend.org. In total, about 200 volunteers showed up, removed 37 vehicles, 100k pounds of trash, 5k pounds of recyclables, and 2k pounds of hazardous materials. The event was a HUGE success and we can’t say thank you enough to all the volunteers who came out and helped, businesses who donated people, equipment, and materials, and individuals who donated money to help support the Public Land Stewards organization.
If you want to get involved, donate towards the cause, or simply learn more, please check out PLSBEND.ORG!

As someone who has actually spent time out in this area, and helped quite a few people out of this area, I see 5 different groups of people out here, with 5 different problems, that need to be handled in 4 very different ways. There are good people who despite being down on their luck, are really trying and just need a helping hand. These people absolutely deserve to be helped and are left very much alone out here as far as enforcement, because they keep their areas clean, organized, and never cause any trouble. I want to help these people. There two types of drug addicts out there. The type that need help and treatment for their addiction, and there needs to be more affordable programs for those people. But unfortunately there are also the type of drug addict that are absolutely CHOOSING to live the way they are and no amount of treatment or handout will solve their problem. “Helping” out that type is only enabling to keep living the life that they are CHOOSING to live. Another category is the people with mental illness, and that goes right back to needing more programs to help those people and support them in living a more normal life. The final group is the criminals who are using this mostly unregulated land to continue their criminal activity, and take advantage of the other groups of people out here. These people absolutely need the hammer dropped on them with no mercy and need to be locked up and charged for all of their crimes with no leniency. This area of the woods is 1.6 million acres of National Forest Service land that is a 10 minute walk from a town of over 100k people. That makes it very easy for all of these types of people to take advantage of all the resources that a good sized city has to offer, in both the good ways and the bad ways, and then head back out into the woods where regulation and enforcement is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. That is why this area has such a huge problem with all of these very different issues that are thrown under the single umbrella of, “homeless”. I don’t know what the final solution is, but recognizing the very different problems that are out here, and looking for very different solutions for all of them is one hell of a start, and continuing to lump them all into one “problem” and looking for one solution is a sure fire way to make sure this situation never changes.

Of the 5 groups, taking 100 people, how would you bucket / estimate those 100 into the 5 groups? 20-20-20-20-20? 80-5-5-5-5? Then you can triage resources on the group that is most destructive of the environment.

I dont think it's fair to lump all "crimes" into one group either. A lot of "crimes" are out of desperation, driving without tabs or a license, not paying taxes, getting proper permits, etc. I agree on locking up violent offenders, but think there needs to be more leaniancy when it comes to helping people get out of a hole. Rent and everything has gotten exponentially more expensive these days.

I worked in the sierra forest as a subcontractor for pge and usfs. The only thing that even made a dent in the trash was opening up our dumpsters to anyone, and putting signs directing them to where to find them. It cost us money, and it chafed my boss to let just anyone use them (they should be packing out!), but once i convinced him that its better to let them dump their own trash then make me dump it for them (after picking it up), we saw a lot less trash on the ground. It was also cheaper in the long run then paying people to clean it up.

One problem with leaving dumpsters in the area is the sheer volume of trash. We filled dozens of loads into dump trailers and multiple dumpsters. The area is also a dumping site for shady local contractors dumping construction debris. If we out out dumpsters they’ll just attract even more people to the “free” dump instead of the municipal dump 5 miles away. The local dump helps with the cleanup events, but won’t (and shouldn’t) fund a permanent free dump.

Maybe instead of dumpsters, hand out trash bags and inform them a truck will be coming weekly for pick up. I noticed a lot of the sites had garbage bagged but maybe no way to haul it.

Our local 4x4 organisations that worked the trail cleanups ended up doing campgrounds too because some of them were about to get closed and that would mean when the ORV closed for the night people would be closer to hotels than campgrounds luckily we only encountered 2 areas that bad and the PDs drug unit ended up cleaning those up because remnants of a meth lab was in both so biohazard tape immediately went up and trucks enclosed trailers and a biohazard team was out quickly to get it out of our way unfortunately no arrests came from it because no evidence of who it was running them could be found

It sadens me to see that those people are forced to trash the land like this because they are not supported by YOU! You will not see anything like that in the whole of Europe. Besides refugee camps in Italy and Greece which house hundreds of thousands of refugees in ghettos. Yes that is a sore spot, but on the other hand, who has the cash to help hundreds of thousands of people at once? We do not. For me it looks like the US people are not capable of maintaining a society looking after their weak and helpless. THAT is sad.

I've been up in the hills and have seen a few homeless camps where they all keep it very clean and and they get together to police the whole area picking up even the smallest bits of trash. I wasn't going to comment on this one as there are already so many, but figured it was worth saying that you, Casey, are the one who showed and shared to me Public Land Stewards of Bend and the reason we started helping, as I didn't know about it outside of the central Oregon landcruiser off-road group. Without your sharing we wouldn't have known to sign up for this event, let alone the others last year. So, thank you for what you do, the time and effort you put in to spread the word is certainly working, and my group will continue coming out and continue to grow in numbers coming to volunteer, because you shared these videos and made it known these events where happening. Went out with group five at the cleanup. Was amazed at the amount of "stuff" that was used to build some of the . Ever a shopping cart. Seven miles out of Bend. Cleaned around a travel trailer with a young couple, car was removed, but the area was a mess. Our leader told us that the people were asked if PLS could cleas up around their camp, and yes, you can. The young couple even helped. They had no way to haul the trash, even had a lot in black bags and ODOT type yellow bags. 18 or so people, 2-3 hours worked there. The couple were down on their luck. I'm not judging, as I know, many can be a paycheck away from that position. I'm the old guy you met who donated to the cause, I'm torn by what has happened to the old and/young of our great country. You have shown in your last 3 or 4 videos a good description/explanation of what is happening. Many thanks to Casey and the many business, other volunteers who worked that Saturday. NO grumbling or complaining just people helping keep the forest clean. Getting to meet the many different people who were volunteering was also fun. I'm a retired carpenter, met a young "to me, 79" lady with many more yrs of Ed. than I, others near old as I, helping. Anyone or all who wanted to help. We worked hard, met new friends, and will be "out there" in June again. Requiring no special talent just a willingness to help. Casey has done a good explanation of the cleanup. Who was that....Bigfoot in red plaid? I've met Jason several times last year, and now Casey, last weekend, two great people.

Casey seeing your intro to this video you definitely are a true leader my friend. I was homeless from September until the end of December. The problem I see is when people think of homeless they think we are all the same and it is the choice people make. There are people where that is true they don't want to better themselves they are ok being in the situation they are in. Then you have people who want to better themselves to get back on there feet so they can start over. I can proudly say I am proof of that i have my own apartment now and I am starting over. When you see homeless people you can't just assume they are all the same. I give all of you guys credit for the work that you do

Working in the construction industry, mostly with an ipad, at times I miss wearing my bags. I volunteered at Habitat for Humanity to feed the urge. Once they realized I had some skills, they asked me to lead crews of inexperienced volunteers. As much as I'd rather swing a hammer, I understood leveraging my knowledge greatly increased what I would be able to accomplish by having 25 lesser experienced people doing their best. Casey, seeing what has happened to the public lands in the China Hat area breaks my heart. When I was a youngster 60 years ago, my family and I hunted deer in this area. This was a time when two weeks of absence from school for hunting season was considered a normal thing. Hunting was more than recreation. It put food on the table and was educational in a way that books and lectures could not match. This area was then (and maybe still is?) honeycombed with fire roads. We drove all through there looking for signs of deer herds to hunt. We never saw anything remotely resembling the situation you and PLS now encounter. What has changed? I can't help but think that we have taken a wrong trail somewhere and are forcing our way deeper into confusion and dysfunction. I don't have a solution, but I think one of the issues is a change in attitudes. We need to regain a sense of humility and gratitude. We are not entitled to free use of this land and our access could be eliminated in the blink of an eye. These lands are a gift and exist by the grace of God. We need to teach our children, drill this into their character, to treat the land with reverence, I don't think we are doing that and haven't done it for a couple of generations. Not even close.

This looks like something out of some post apocalypse movie. I’ve run across similar looking active encampments in the forests around here. One of the worst around here is in the Wolf River conservancy in Memphis within sight of I-240, so thousands see it daily.

Kudos to all the cleaning groups, all the volunteers, organizers and the videographers for the work they do, time after time. Looking at the "after" views, it's hard to believe that the area was so littered.

Wow, what a difference people can make in cleaning up the forest. Too bad the people who created this cannot see the harm they are doing to the land. Thank you and all the volunteers who came out to help make this part of the forest viable. Stay safe, warm, and Blessings to all.

You've done plenty by donating your time with that rollback wrecker. A lot of people can pick up the little stuff. Only a few people are capable AND willing to come out and take away the big stuff! Spreading the word is pretty dang important. And you threw in an excellent explanation of the between the people.

No matter where any of us watching this are, there's some of us who probably want to help in some way. It's a tough one. I definitely feel like a key ingredient to the right way forward is compassion. Perhaps a donation system can be utilized to provide a garbage and a recycling dumpster to each of these sites that get picked up by a truck once a week, thus enabling the occupants of the site to have a way to maintain the cleanliness themselves? It does seem that garbage disposal is a key issue?

Watching that exercise, my mind went back to when gramps hooked up a hay rake to the back of a 30's vintage McCormack Deering steel wheeled 10-20 and pulled it through one of his fields alongside a road leading to the local landfill where lots of trash blew out of pick-ups etc., heading to the dump. That worked well and he didn't need to worry about punctures on calcium solution loaded tires. You folks should be proud of yourselves for both respecting th forest and the less fortunate who are genuinely trying to leave no mess while getting back on their feet. Kudos. 👍

You're introduction is spot on Casey! Have been living in the woods for quite sometime and have seen it get considerably worse. I keep a clean spot and have even ridden along with you on one of these cleanups. Would hate to see privileges taken away because of a disrespectful few. Some of my favorite spots have become trashed and now avoid China hat. Would rather spend a few extra dollars in fuel to get to town than be a part of those camps. Thankfully I have been blessed with an opportunity to get my CDL and away training at the moment or would be right there again. Thank you to yourself, PLS, and the countless other volunteers providing the effort to keep these beautiful forests clean and open for shared use.

It’s been probably 5 or 7 years since I’ve camped and ridden that area. Back then most people used it like I did- there for a few days and when I left there was no sign anyone had been there. Sad what it’s become, and thank you to all working to clean it up.

You're right about the value of "spreading the word" about the impact of homelessness outside of the urban setting. Folks who don't spend time in the forest are likely unaware of this type of threat to the environment.

I admire your group’s willingness to keep going. Our village had some bins and bottle bank on a piece of public land. Some people kept leaving their trash by the recycling bins rather than walk a few yards and put it in the actual waste bins. A group of us would ( unofficially)take it in turns to spend 10 minutes clearing up. Trouble is that slowly one by one we gave up and in the end the Mayor removed the bins from the public land then put up a gate with a padlock keeping us all off the land. So once again …respect to you guys for not giving up on something that makes our village issue look like nothing.

I believe that when we start treating people as humans, respect their choices and boundaries, then real change can happen. This needs to happen from all sides. Being down on our luck (been there myself) does not give us a right to trash the area! Thanks Casey for keeping it real. 😊

We lived in Bend area for years. It is a real problem. The national forest is a junk yard. Down on your luck is one thing. Leaving the forests a junk yard is what is happening. Good to see the cleanup effort. It is time to solve the problem. La Pine forests are the same.

Very good Sir! Yes indeed: you are doing more beneficial work filming and raising awareness than just picking up a little trash. You guys documenting this gets more people involved, more people paying attention to the issues and to being clean themselves outdoors; as well as raising awareness of land use issues and documenting the efforts and volunteers making the difference. And the mechanical removal of the vehicle and heavy debris is not inconsequential either! 🙏💪♥️

Thank you for this video. It's absolutely vital that we raise awareness not just of the visually obvious problem, but the complexities of the various ways these situations occur. The kinds of quick-fix one-size-fits-all solutions that are commonly proposed and implemented will at best only kick the problem down the road, and at worst make it much worse. Please don't feel bad for filming; it's important work and you do an excellent job at it.

In the early 70's we had kids show on ABC called "The Afterschool Special". One of the re-curring commercials was a PSA teaching us the song Brighten The Corner Where You Are, (a very old gospel song) and teaching us about keeping your surroundings clean and tidy inside/outside your home and in your neighborhood. You guys made me think about that. You all were raised right! Thank you so much for being you.

Thank you so much for clarifying the situation and explaining what you are doing to help the area and the people living there. What you are doing helps to give some incentive to the people living there and trying to get by, to keep the place clean. It gives them a much nicer place to live. Some people live there by choice, and leave the mess, Some live there because they have NO choice, and they hate the mess.
