ff16 has the same criticism that GoW had when it was released. I still remember, God of Soy, being the meme people played out for the rebranding that God of War did to it's core mechanics. Took years for that to go away. You want to "judge" a game? Judge it for what it is, not for what it isn't. I don't like SiM racing games like Grand Turismo. I don't have fun playing them at all. What I will not do is play GT and judge it for lacking Need for Speed features. It's not what that game was designed around. "But FF has to be X", yes and? What does what the previous games have to do with what the game is now? Those are those games, ff16 is the game currently present. So then what are the issues of this game? The bugs? The lack of content? The bad VA? The bad mechanics of the game? Unresponsive controls? Wonky Camera? There are dozens of checklist issues gamers use since games of current gen have multitude of problems. FF16 almost checks none of these, so then what is there left to complain about? Well, the pizza took too long to make, thus it's a bad pizza. What kind of straw reaching have the "true" fans have to make to just say, "FF16 isn't to my taste." I can go on many honest criticisms about ff7 old school that is far more valid then what they give for ff16. It's pettiness disguised as "critique".

This is going to be a long one... Back in the day when SE wanted to make games like this, they created spin-offs. Things like Type-0, Lightning Returns, Dissidia, Dirge of Cerberus and Strangers of Paradise. I feel like the divide in the fanbase began when FF11 was released. As much as I enjoy FF14, I've always felt like FF11 and FF14 should have been FF Online. Remember FF15 was also originally a spin-off title of FF13 that was supposed to be Versus XIII before SE made the dumbass decision to make it a mainline title. You mentioned it in the video how SE is trying to bring new fans to the series. People who may have never played the original games because they don't like TB systems. But in doing this, they're heavily neglecting the fans that helped get it to where it is now. FF12 and FF13 did a great job blending the two between action and TB. Hell, even FF7R was good at this. FF16 is an ACTION GAME. Straight up. The comparison I always use is how would you feel if a game like Call of Duty announced a new game. Except you find out instead of a FPS, it's a RTS or a card game. And this is what the mainline franchise will be going forward. Yeah, you'll probably bring in a new crowd and possibly keep some of the people that do enjoy that genre but you're going to lose alot of interest from your core fanbase. And I think that's where the criticism comes into play. You have people who had no interest in the series when it was what it was before. People who started with Crisis Core, Strangers of Paradise, FF15, maybe FF13. People who don't like TB games coming in and saying this is an FF just because you see chocobos, summons and moogles. But it lacks everything else that made FF, FF. Enemies outside of bosses are no threat at all opposed to you randomly running into an enemy like Frogs for example who could make your life a living hell with "frog jab". Why doesn't Malboro's bad breath give you every STD known to man in FF16? Oh...status effects dont exist. Where is the party management? Clive and Torgal are the only members that constantly stay in the party. Party NPCs do little to no damage. One of the coolest thing about FF was going on adventures meeting new characters, leveling them up and getting new skills, learning their backstories and just seeing how they grow together as a team. None of this exist here outside of Clive's relationship with Jill. Every character is there to help Clive advance forward in his journey and only for that reason. Weapons and armor upgrading is damn near usless in this game. Learning skills is streamlined af and don't encourage character customization much. There is little to no exploration. No world map to explore. No airships. Side quests, while a few are well-written, are boring as hell. Remember chocobo hot and cold? Or chocbo breeding to get stuff like the hidden knights of the round? Or doing quests to get everyone's ultimate weapons? Finding hidden party members and cutscenes? Not even a superboss. Nothing of that magnitude is in this game. It's a straightforward, "go here, do this and advance to the next thing" kind of game. I say all of this to also say that I don't think FF16 is a bad game either. Is it a FF game, yeah sure. Is is a GOOD FF game. No, absolutely not...in my opinion.

Also...turn based games are doing just fine. Octopath Traveller II is being considered as one of the best RPGs of the year. The Pokémon series always makes a killing. Euiyuden Odyssey is another anticipated new turn based game from the creators of Suikoden, Wild Arms and Castlevania. Persona 5 and Dragon Quest XI is still considered one of the best. People were hyped for the Chrono Cross remaster. Not to mention the new remasters that people are excited about like Suikoden 1 and 2 or FF9.

The issue is that this game too big to be a spin-off. Spin-offs generally sell worse and this would mean a much smaller budget and smaller scale. XVI can only exist in its current form as a mainline title.

I just finished the game and the only critical thing I will say is the ending but other then that I loved it. There are people who will not like it which is fine but don't badh people who do love it

It's not just dark and gritty. It's beyond hammerfisted. Stephanie wasn't saying it's just dark and shitty, the allegory ignores actual darkness. The racism allegory lacks any nuance, it's comic book levels of evil comedy, but it expects you to want to save the world despite literally peasants being literally shite. That's what they where saying. I like the game, I do, but as a plot it's kinda mid. It's incredibly predictable, with few exceptions. The allegories are all super loud without any actual depth. While I agree turn based combat wasn't going to be around forever, turn based combat just isn't dead, SE literally still sells turn based RPGs that do just fine. The gameplay doesn't feel like Final Fantasy, at least 15 had something that feels like a party. If they do continue this path, it would probably work better if they had at least more interactions with one another. Also, people complaining about the combat might just not like the combat? The fact people getting defensive some people not liking it is weird, as its mostly preference. I think it would've been better if they got rid of the extraneous RPG elements all together. A couple accessory slots is fine, but if you're going to make Devil May Cry, just make Devil May Cry flavored with Final Fantasy. The pointless item progression, stats, and levels just ends up making some enemies pointless and other enemies twenty minute flesh sponges. The side characters DONT get enough love, and the game BEGS you to read their Wikipedia articles they built into a game. I didn't buy a novel, I bought a video game. I like that it's there, but this game will literally do a five year time jump just to start having you talk to a new character you've never met but Clive knows is important. Even Mid, who you hear nothing about until she shows up if for some reason you're not doing all the side content. Like, this is a game with cutscenes, you could at least try to give me information in a way that isn't opening up a character profile chart. 7/10, I'm excited to see what they do for DLC. Maybe stop pretending to be an RPG for 17.
