You don't need to super grind on this game. There's a couple tricks to easily catch up lower level characters... the exp boost skill, together with one of Primrose's abilities, matched up with the cat enemies... dozens of thousands of exp.

I think it deserves more of a Bravely Default treatment, at least. The OT design would hold it back, as it holds itself back with job sprites not reflecting outside of battles. This is not a hassle with 3D models, because they don't have to account for every frame of animation like with sprites.

The final boss theme was so good I couldn’t wait to get back and try it again after I died. I did about a two hour grind session to get my lower leveled characters caught up and then beat it on my 2nd attempt. The final boss fight is perfect. A perfect test that you will only pass if you’ve mastered all of the combat mechanics in the game. I finally realized the value of certain skills that I ignored all game. I had to formulate a complete strategy to win instead of just attack a weakness or simply just attack like in so many other games.

Every one talks about how rough the grinding is in this game, but it's really not if you're a bit patient. Certain dungeons have those run-away cat enemies. The exp boost skill, combined with primrose strange dance, than magic... I went with all characters from 35-40 to 70+ in under two hours. Lol

I just beat Miguel, and I totally see where you're coming from. It's wild just how many turns he can rack up towards the tail end of the battle! It's like if you don't Break him every single go around without fail, you're pretty much fucked. That was the first fight where I finally gave everyone a sub-job, and it would have been absolutely impossible without that. My biggest tip to anyone considering picking up Octopath is to absolutely visit the subject shrines for tackling any character's third chapter.

It's honestly isn't that big of a grind if you don't get set into one strategy and one team. And all the bosses have a way to exploit them like stacking side step on your party, making a really hard boss to easy as eating cake. Usually I would take one try just to try to find exploits and weaknesses and if i do lose then I know how to beat them and what jobs I needed. It reminded me alot of bravely default and I loved both of these games and would highly recommend both

I agree with you. This game is in the podium of the best 3 rpg I have ever played at.. This game has something special and unique. Storyline is the best ever, I never missed a line or skipped a talk. You feel deeply involved in the story of each character. Soundtrack is stunning. Combat system is one of the most entertaining ever. I little disagree on encounters frequency..you can always flee from combat with no consequences or as you said you can use a special ability to have a lot less encounters. Grinding is only a matter of where and when . With good places and strategy you can literally fly in gaining xp for your party members. there are abilities to gain more xp and also perfect groups of enemies to gain massive xp very fast. They need to be all leveled up ..it gives ever more dept to the game. Boss fights are hard ..but that is the very best part of the game..beating them is a real challenge and lead to big satisfaction. What a great game!!

I loved the game until the end. The hour+ long boss gauntlet you have to fight through, then, with no chance to save, a final boss that was more like an MMO endgame boss that requires moves so precise you'll either have to look up a video that shows you every move, or spend 250 hours getting a shot to re-fight it every hour and a half or so before you learn the patterns. I spent forever on that gauntlet and died to the end boss real quick and never loaded the game up again because that just simply not fun or enjoyable. Worst idea ever for a final boss area and killed the game for me.

hm, how strange. Jsut watched a walktrough and then just say this. And a straneg mindsett. A good game, but mind breaking elements and setups. Granted I never played the game, although i love the story and it has some stroy elements that really make me cry. And the extra bosses with sub classes seem to make the character awwesome. But the complains are real. I have actually asked myself why many of the bsses have to take as long time as they do. But it has a great soundtrack, great voicecast, loveable chracters. And you may never have gotten to the final boss but from what I saw of him that Was One True Dungeon that only thosoe brave enough to handle deepest FF dungeons could. And I guess that fits with the theme Octopath travel, the travelers that exceed the willpower of ending the journey.

“Nobody likes random encounters.” Um, no, a lot of us do. Sure, on-field encounters are nice, but they’re just unrealistic for large enemies and the like. Random encounters is a level of abstraction to maintain realism, similar to an “Overworld”. I would be really annoyed if a skeleton chased after me to enter a battle Paper Mario style. (Edit: Chrono Trigger style location triggered battles could probably work, but then you couldn’t equip a half- or no-encounter skill.) And I’m surprised about your other complaints, too. If you complained about the ridiculous generic dungeons, I would understand. Characters don’t interact with each other enough? Granted. Wish you could change their default classes? So do I. But the Boss has too much HP? That’s so you can’t exploit the bosses with cheese tactics as you can in most games. And I never had to grind levels even without doing the side quests, so I think you’ve favoring characters too much for this game.

I personally found most of the bosses easy to beat, the hardest ones were the special boss that gives you the war class (sorry I don't remember the name) and the final boss of the final dungeon, yeah grinding (or what ever is written) can be really exhausting when you're in high levels specially. The battle system is really good, I found it really easy to learn and use, I don't really get how people can say is hard to learn, at least for me it was pretty easy. The OST is pretty good, the bosses themes are exciting and the place's themes can be so damn relaxing. Secundary missions can be exhausting too, I had to look on a guide for not expend 100 hours doing by myself. Story by chapters are not bad, I like how all the things that are show in one character campaing can be complemented with the things shown in other campaing and then when you beat all the campaing you understand everything, and how each campaing focus is the character personallity, motivations, etc. I liked that coz it gave me for information about the characters I use in my party and know them better. I beat the game at 100% and I could say more things about this game, is really good, in my opinion some people complain just for the sake of doing it, I'm not saying that this game is perfect, it has good and bad things like every game, but some people just go and say shit about it with out even playing it. The boss that I found really unfair was [Spoiler] Galdera, holly shit that son of a bitch took me almost a month to beat it, idk who has the idea of that boss fight coz that was a hell of a fight. I hope you all understanted most of the things I said, my english is not perfect sorry, if you read all this thank you, I hope you have a great day, night or afternoon c:

I have to say I mostly disagree with you. I love this game. I'm still playing, just finished all the chapter 4's and I'm finishing up the side jobs that opened after the relevant chapter 4 was completed. I for one like random encounters. It can be hard to get right in a game, but this game did it well. I find it very amusing that you knock the random encounter rate, take the skill that reduces it, but then complain that characters are underleveled. Well of course they are. You're skipping tons of battles. You also complained about having to use everyone in the game, but I thought it was well designed to, not only encourage you, but allow you to do so. I was glad for that part. For me, I would always trade out my party for the lowest leveled people I had after a chapter or dungeon. Therion was my starter, so he was of course way higher, but everyone else stayed fairly equal with each other. I had no problems being ready for anyone's chapter or a side dungeon. I say that with the admission that I haven't gone into the final, final area yet and may have to grind. But what better game to grind in than 1 where the battle system and music are excellent. Plus there's ways to increase encounter rate, exp gain and JP gain. I find it funny that you didn't touch on the one thing I have an issue with in the game, the side jobs. I like the system and the layout, but I wish there was some more help in the game. It would help if a character's name was visible when you could use path act as opposed to talking to them. As a 40 year old with a kid and a job etc etc, it's a bit tedious to talk to everyone and remember all the little things they said that may be hints for side jobs, even future ones. So I did look up a guide for side jobs. I did feel good when I figured one out myself, I will say that. Also wasn't a fan of how some side jobs or people involved were sometimes in lower level areas that people wouldn't really have a reason to go to. Like the last one with Impresario, in the beginning area around S'waarit, I'd have never walked through there and found it...

Thanks for that reply! I loved the game as well. It stopped me from playing FF7 Remake, which I’m still aiming to beat. I’m 40, married with a kid and I enjoyed the layers and systems it presented. H’aanit was my main and I preserved a different team to go through (led by Olberic) after her run: I did lvl them a bit from time to time. I thought the difficulty was fair. I only struggled against the “Devourer of Men”(I think that’s it’s name) and the Six armed (Windheimsomething) who was cool. I enjoyed having to stop and figure out just what was needed to beat them without using a guide. Very rewarding! I took a break as I put in 200hrs (my kid would sometimes play and open treasure chests then scream when a monster encounter would occur and hand it over to me lol!). Looking forward to this secret boss and ending I’ve heard about. 10/10 for me.

I agree with you there. Upon replays, I’m able to sneak past all the enemies in the upper leveled areas to enter the chapter 4 cities, even at level 10. The “random” encounter rates are CONSISTENT and can be planned around. It’s not like Pokémon where every patch of grass has a chance to spring a battle. In Octopath, it’s based on distance traveled.

@@Rexis102 After beating the game, I watched some speedruns and learned that the hidden "step counter" that builds as you move and will eventually lead to, as you perfectly stated, a "random" encounter, can be reset many ways. They would stop and save or interact with something, or go into a cave or shrine in order to reset the encounters. I never speed run and wouldn't want to avoid all encounters, but it's neat to be able to sneak into higher level towns as you said.

Final Fantasy VI had 12 characters each with their own stories and it melded together perfectly. Wish Octopath was more like that.

FFVI is amazing but it also had too big of a cast imo. The characters in it do interact unlike Octopath Traveler so that's better but some of them barely have any character/plot development. Actually when it came to the characters individually and not as a group most of them in Octopath were more fledged out.

Its true that octo has more individual centered quests, but their interactions are very interesting for me at least. Lots of character delevopment in dialogues during quests. But the postgame they kinda mix in one thing... just saying.

Pimpjira I actually like how much character development FFVI has. Even a character like Gau (who still works with zero explanation) has a complete story arc by reuniting him with his crazy father. That’s more than you get from Cait Sith in FFVII or Selphie in FFVIII. Granted, Umaro, Gogo, and even Mog don’t get the same treatment, but I think they fall into “bonus character” territory.

I have similar feelings. I loved it... but being an adult with limited time, it’s so frustrating to spend a lot of time on a boss only to get killed 30 minutes in. I hate it whenever my gaming time feels like a waste in terms of putting the time in, but not making much progress.

Love the shirt, Aggretsuko is one of my favourite anime in recent years. I share a lot of your sentiments towards this game. It's wonderfully presented but the visuals and the sound weren't even the best parts about it - I really loved the combat and the boss battles had a sense of scale that really excited me and pushed me to progress in the game. But I, too, drew the line at the post-game boss. I get that it's kind of an homage to the old school RPGs this game was descended from, in terms of having a hidden boss that's ridiculously difficult, but the fact that there's basically no way to do it except to grind the other half of your team that, by the core design of the game itself, pretty much forced you to neglect in your first playthrough, is to me a major flaw in game design. There are some things I really love about this game that I haven't seen done quite the same way anywhere else, but for me the bottom line is that it falls just short of being a true classic. Probably a solid 8/10.

Almost every JRPG has superbosses, they're a genre trope that has never really stopped being a thing. They're optional tho, so that's not a bad thing. It would be like people shitting on Final Fantasy X because Penance and the Dark Aeons are super difficult. You don't really have to grind all that much to beat it tho

I actually like/prefer random battles, but I 1000% agree with the complaint about grinding. I didn’t have to really grind for the main story (I stuck with 3 characters straight away and swapped in whoever I needed for the chapters) so most of the characters were fairly low level. But when I found out that the “true” ending requires EVERY character to be pretty high level, I quit then too (even though I was like 80+ hours in). It was an incredibly poor design choice by the devs.

I think Octopath Traveler is still one of my favourite switch titles and one of my favourite RPGs. Love the graphics and REALLY love the soundtrack. I wasn't aware at first, but the battle system can be quite deep. I never thought the game was unfair. Yeah, there is some grinding to do, but I mostly played one characters story after another. Then, after finishing every single chapter 1 I would move to the next chapter. (Btw, yes, Miguel is pretty hard. Probably the first boss who really kicked my butt) I also really enjoyed the end game content. Didn't know what to do at first, so I looked up which quests to finish. That's one criticism I have though, some of the quest are a little to vague. But after doing the 4 additional "job-bosses", man.... this really makes you feel like an overpowered badass! .....Until you face the final boss XD Damn, this was extremely tough. Managed to beat it though, on my third try. Literally jumped out of my chair, yelling: "YES!!!" Is it worth it? Nah, mainly just for bragging rights :P

I WANT to love this game - on paper I should. But I don't have a ton of time these days, and I can't stand that each random battle takes a long time and I have to work out all the weaknesses every single time. I'm sure it gets better later since I only got like 5 or 6 hours in, but maaaan, I don't want to be at 100% mental concentration for every single little (very frequent) random battle.

I’m gonna have to disagree. I’ve recently been replaying the game with solo runs. Solo Therion has yielded pretty good results. Sure it’s hard to take on 4 enemies at once, that’s why you strategize against them. It’s part of the fun. To simply say “it’s too hard” and criticize it isn’t very healthy for a game. You’ll end up with Pokémon, literally no challenge in the games except for what players self-impose. Octopath Traveler by no means is a perfect game. For me, it’s hard to replay it. There’s not much left to explore and learn, that was a lot of the appeal for me. Some of the stories are only loosely connected, and there is little to no character interaction in each individual story. It’s written as though every story is solo rather than having each story be prepared for both solo and multi-character runs. It’s really off-putting to hear a character say “you’re alone” when, in-fact, there are 4 of your party there together. Like the scene where Cyrus is trapped in a dungeon in Yvon’s mansion, they could have had Cyrus get trapped on his own, then have his party reunite with him in the mansion around the same time Therese rescued him. Not just have the party magically appear after that, but to actually acknowledge it. But it seemed as though that acknowledgement wasn’t a priority for the devs, and it harms the reality of the story a bit. Overall, Octopath Traveler can be lacking, but the reasons you gave didn’t really seem too convincing. I’m going to just chop it down to you experiencing the game in a different way, considering my experience with the game was fairly easy while yours was fairly difficult.

Honestly, the bosses aren't that challenging until the post game. The character story bosses are relatively easy. I'll tell you what the real problem with this game is, it's the fact that you need a guide if you don't want to miss any of the party banter.

Well considering it's made by the same people who made Bravely Default then I also find it strange they didn't add the fact that you could change the encounter rate, also it only has part of the brave and default system so it's somewhat a familiar combat system if you've previously played Bravely Default.

The Worst thing was the true ending of the game, which is the true common point of the 8 stories linking them all. And how do you unlock it? By doing random sub quests without a real reason, then you go through a long boss rush without any way to save between or after them and in the end you face the true final boss. Which, for the first and only time in the entire game, REQUIRES TO USE EVERY CHARACTER. Getting through a chapter with an underlvl member isn't that hard, facing the strongest enemy in the game using them all is utterly impossible, and at that point in my playthrough they were FORTY LEVELS BEHIND, it would've required dozens of hours to farm those. Just ridicolous.

Excelent game! I didn't have the struggles you mentioned but initially I was planning on challenging every NPC and that lead to Olberic being always at around 5 levels above everyone else (he was my main character so I couldn't take him out of the party). I was also goint to complete everything anyway so for the rest of the game I just swapped to the party members with the lowest level and also fought everything at least once. In most boss battles I had Olberic dealing damage while the rest of the party handled buff/debuffs/BP/healing/reviving. I did liked the challenge and thats why, usually on the optional bosses, Olberic was arround the same level as bosses and everyone else was below. The Jotunn, the Leviatan, all the special jobs bosses and the final boss where the hardest fights for me. Beated the first special job boss with Olberic at 52 and the last at 54 (their shrines are recommended for level 50), the rest of my party was between 39 to 44. By far the hardest fights for me, took me 2 days and lots of hours to beat them. The final boss took me 3 tries, it was very challenging and a super long fight but I'm glad it didn't turn out to be a pushover, Olberic was at 71 and everyone else between 58 and 60. I really appreciate the challenge and the boss battles lenghts adds a lot to it too, I had so many clutch moments with the special jobs bosses to then die close to their demise... The fight's lenghts really depletes your resources and forces you to take some alternative strategies in consideration.

I would've forgiven this game for being a complete bore fest, if it weren't for these three things. The fact that it's grindy as hell, made worse because of the fact that you have to do it twice over since half of the party members will be underdeveloped The only story I was actually invested in was Primroses. Literally everyone elses stories were boring as hell. You have to fight a boss rush of ALL the Chapter 4 bosses before you fight the final boss, with no way to stock back up afterwards. Trust me, I've tried everything i good faith to push though the game, but after I discovered that this game has a boss rush before the final boss before the true final boss after the painful 90 hour mark, no. I just couldn't deal with this game anymore. I've played shorted JRPG that were more worth my time than this, including Romancing Saga 3.

Octopath shows the potential, classical jrpg have if they will have handcrafted open world, really good exploration element and the gameplay is not restricted by linear scenario. I have no idea, why such a gem received so much bashing from different sides. Octopath is the very same classic, but REALLY better in almost every aspect except may be storytelling.

If you understand and use buff and debuff properly most bosses can be killed with fair efficiency. Some of the optional bosses are long, but in-game chapters can be slain in pretty quick fashion. It is a grinder but, as a gamer of the 1990's that just feels comfortable.
