Fortunately, no one has to choose between meat and fake meat. We can do whole foods.
@nancyhey10128 ай бұрын
I agree, and that is the healthiest way to eat. I think fake meats were developed just because humans are such creatures of habit. They prefer the tastes and textures of foods that they are already familiar with. So people who were raised in families where the diet was heavy in meat and animal products feel safer making the transition to a vegan diet when they can still have foods that are somewhat familiar to them.
@La_TangoMariaa8 ай бұрын
@@nancyhey1012 Exactly this! When I switched over to veganism I would grill a beyond burger every weekend because back before I become vegan that was tradition for me. Define whole foods. I don't think seed oils qualify. Processed foods are not whole foods. As noble as vegan sounds it has gone as far down the processed food rat hole as McDonald's. I believe in whole foods. Exactly what in the vegan diet existed in its current state 200 years ago? I'm not vegan for health reasons. If I valued philosophy more than health I'd be vegan.

@Meathead-108108 ай бұрын
Please don't eat whole foods, many of them are from croplands. This is why people on a plant based diet and those consuming processed foods are responsible for the most grotesque animal abuses. Soybean seeds contain about 36% protein, 19% of oil, 30% carbohydrates, 5% crude fiber, and 5% of ash Source: "Soybean seed physiology, quality, and chemical composition under soil moisture stress" About 85 percent of the world’s soybean crop is processed into meal and vegetable oil, and virtually all of that meal is used in animal feed. Some two percent of the soybean meal is further processed into soy flours and proteins for food use. Approximately six percent of soybeans are used directly as human food, mostly in Asia. Source: "Gentle World As We Soy, So Shall We Reap" 100% of that oil is consumed by humans as 88 percent of soybean oil is used for human consumption (mostly cooking oil) and 12 percent is used as an alternative to petroleum oil. Ninety eight percent of soybean meal is used for animal feed (poultry, hogs and cattle mostly) and only one percent is used to produce food for people. Soybean meal is the material remaining after solvent extraction of oil from soybean flakes, the meal is heat steamed and ground in a hammer mill. Source: Michigan State University - "Where do all these soybeans go?" Soybeans are the most valuable agricultural export of the United States. Source: "Top U.S. Agricultural Exports in 2017" China consumes around 17 million metric tons, U.S. consumption is 12 million metric tons. Just these top 10 countries consume 48 million metric tons of soybean oil, so at most only 19% of each bean is oil, that means about 194 million tons of soybean meal. Source: "Soybean Oil Domestic Consumption by Country in 1000 MT" The fiber would be a waste product like cotton seeds were but now is sold very cheaply to the industrial factory animal farms as feed. Without this cheap source of fiber for the animal feed there would be much less industrial factory animal farms and farmers would need to allow animals to graze in pasture. The more unhealthy plant oils humans consume, the more industrial animal factory farms can be supported with cheap waste fiber as the oil is the real commodity. So the people who are consuming plant oils are allowing the industrial factory animal farms (cheaper because less land is needed) to proliferate and outcompete farmers using regenerative techniques. There are many other crops which have waste fiber that contribute to industrial factory animal farms, e.g. corn Eat Meat, Not Too Little, Mostly Fat

Personally, I simply can no longer afford many of the vegan products I used to buy before. I'm a conscious buyer with a sharp eye on prices, and I saw some "interesting" increases over the past 6 months (sometimes literally overnight, like a shampoo that on a Friday was £2 and the very next Saturday was 2.60). Spring onions went from 37p to 59, frozen veggies from £1.79 to 2.89, agave syrup was £2 now is 2.80, and the average price range of vegan meat/cheese before was £2-2.80 now is £2.80-4. I used to treat myself to some of these vegan alternatives every now and then, but now I just live on canned legumes, pasta, and fresh fruit and veggies, which is healthier anyway. I buy soy chunks and tofu for protein and it's still budget-friendly. Whilst wages remain the same, all prices for essentials have increased dramatically, and I don't quite understand how this is not taken into consideration when it comes to a lower availability of vegan products. It's just obvious that if I have to spend x amount of money for my weekly shopping, I'm not gonna choose to blow it on Beyond Meat (£4 each) or vegan brie (£6).

Awesome video, Ed. Kind of almost made me cry. As an ethical vegan of almost 18 years, who has dedicated her life to building a brand for over 13 of those years, based on compassion and spreading awareness to advocate for those most vulnerable, it’s been rough to see all the disingenuous brands making bank off of consumers’ lack of critical thinking (among many other factors) and yes, often putting out inferior products. I’m meticulous with what we put out- I don’t want anyone eating a single bite of our chocolate to say it isn’t good because it’s vegan. Buy your rice and beans wherever you need- but let’s support good vegan brands and great vegan products. And not listen to these absolute idiots putting kids through irrational spelling bees 🙄❤️

As a more experienced vegan, I tend to go towards whole plant, much more than I used to as a beginner vegan. I often thought about the fact maybe "bad" vegan products like very sweet cookies or vegan crisps won't do very well, because vegans tend to understand good health more than meat eaters, because meat eating is the default position to have in society, and veganism is the challenger that brings out more curiosity surrounding good nutrition. I do buy vegan ice-cream, and crisps... but just not as much. I prefer cooking. With vegetables. This may be why you don't see many "bad-for-you" vegan products. They're just not in demand. I would suggest looking at a correlation between lowering sales of "fake meat" products, and a rise in sales of vegetables and legumes. It may indicate a simple switch from beginner vegans who have learned from their experiences. Less vegan resources = more reliance on experience to design your diet. There are fewer vegan cooking hacks, etc. Great video, much love, Ed!

that 2019 vegan boom was ace, some awesome lines were coming out in regular supermarkets, i had soooo much choice. but yeah, more beans and tofu than fun fancy fake meats mainly due to cozzy lives. i'm also exploring vegan cooking a little more instead of just substituting like i was to start out with, i feel like that's a natural progression anyway; away from fake meats and towards beans and lentils and that, and that's kinda one that I'd guess capital owners would likely not understand. because switching to a vegan diet was a moral conclusion for me, my switch had to be more or less immediate, i couldn't cut down on meat slowly because i just didn't want to eat it anymore, and the substitutions made things easy, i just picked up different items that did the same thing. I'd still suggest substitutions and fake meats as the best way to start for someone who is doing it for moral reasons, though if they are doing it for health reasons mainly, I'd probably suggest a different route.

I think it's often then case. At first you just look for alternatives of meat products to make the transition easy then you open up to all the different vegan dishes. I used to spend a lot of money on vegan burgers or nuggets, now it's mainly tofu and home cooking. So I guess I'm responsible for the drop in the sales of vegan alternatives even though I didn't quit being vegan. I think those alternatives are mostly helpful when you make the transition. Same with alcohol. At first you just buy the non-alcoholic beer/wine whenever you're hanging out at a pub then eventually you stop caring and are fine with a juice or coke.

It's possible, just yesterday I was listening to Vegan Business Tribe podcast with some stats and he said we just might need a generation for veganism to be more common (there's plenty interesting stats in this video, highly recommend as a companion piece to this Ed's video): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXq0aZWjrrusl6s People who say that the world will never change are just refusing to take a reality check and compare today to what it was 10 or 20 years ago. They also forget that the only constant in the world is progress. Sadly, that progress is slow because there always has to be a huge group of guys boycotting literally every single change in the world. But eventually they just give up or move on to the next thing. People were laughing the same way about computer geeks just few decades ago. Yet here we are. Every big change in society and world started with a huge backlash. There's more and more reserach on how eating plant-based is beneficial to both humans and the planet. There's barely any scientific argument left for continuing the consumption of food made from animals. Eventually it's gonna give. Will we see a change in a year or two? Most likely not, because I see the meat industry and the anti-vegan trolls fighting really fiercely trying to stop the progress. But about the only thing they're gonna achievie is slowing down the progress a bit. It's unevitable. Also, I always like to tell people: "What would you rather have to tell your kid in the future? That we were part of a generation that finally made a change and gave them a better world or continuously explain why the world is worse than ever and why people justify so much abuse?" Idk, feels like a no brainer to me. It was easy for my parents to control the narrative when I was a kid (small town, 90s). Whatever they said I had to believe and didn't have much in terms of doing research. Same with media, we didn't have the internet so you basically bought everything they would say on TV. But today? With the internet? That kind of lying and gaslighting is gonna be impossible. We'll have no choice but to be completely honest with our kids. Otherwise, they will quickly educate themselves and start asking "Mom, Dad, why did you lie to me?".
@bananamcfanana16398 ай бұрын
When we first went vegan, my wife and I bought plenty of plant-based meats. Over time though, we've phased them out. They're great as a pivot food when you're switching to veganism and really help ease the transition. Eventually though, we decided they're not worth the cost for the taste you get (which often isn't all that nice). So we just replaced things with veggies! I've discovered a whole world of fantastic flavours with butternut squash, sweet potato, lentils... So perhaps part of the fall in sales of vegan meats is that people are just eating more veggies instead!
