I think it sounds bloody brilliant, mate! I heard a friend playing one of these a while back and was blown away by how good it sounded. Well, I finally got to play one for meself and must say, it actually feels like an amp in how it 'pushes back'. Also, it sounds a lot like a furry, breathing thing. For the past 5 years, my Kemper has been at the heart of my rig (with some important additions), mostly because I like not having to cart tonnes of equipment to sessions. (I do now also bypass the Profiler's IRs and use the ones in my OX Stomp, which sound killer.) But I could now see also bypassing the Kemper's amps and cabs for certain sounds and just using the Friedman IR-D. I think the combination it would give me would result in quite an arsenal of sound. Cheers!

This sounds amazing. I think I prefer your tones when u aren’t doing the extreme hi cuts to get EJ type tones. In this demo and in the cranked pro reverb tone there is presence and pick attack, lots of nuance that gets lost with extreme hi cuts. This is a great tone that sounds real. The cranked pro reverb tone is hard to beat and my favorite but this is certainly excellent in its own regard. Happy Father’s Day!

Killer playing! I run a Twin Sister combo with the IR-X on my board and have it wired with an A/B that I can switch between the Twin Sister preamp and the IR-X where they share the TS power amp and speaker, etc. last gig I stayed in the Twin Sister for the entire gig, but they can essentially be dialed to sound very close. The TS is maybe a little darker and a tiny bit less sparkly than the IR-X, but in all honesty I haven’t had time at a gig to really try all of the options the TS has to offer. Awesome tone tools, all of the Friedman stuff.

Dave Friedman has all the bases covered. If you can't afford one of his amps. You can get this one or the other one. I've even seen guys run em through crappy solid state heads and still get amazing tones. The tones on this video sound great and reactive

Does it feel like a tube amp though?
@craigoriopequeño50529 күн бұрын
@@scottbrady4472 Oh man, absolutely. It’s an all tube preamp running into an all tube power amp. Much like the rack mount units of yesteryear but now the preamp is on the pedalboard complete with an fx loop. It’s brilliant - only *one cable runs back to the power amp from the pedalboard rather than three with a conventional rig (two for the fx loop and one for the guitar input). Even with all of its IR & cab sim technology aside, this thing is worth its weight in gold. It’s well thought out, efficient and sounds amazeballs 🤙 *One cable from the last pedal in the fx loop chain into the fx loop return of the power amp.

@simonmelrose76374 ай бұрын
These do not work out front, but you CAN plug them into the effects loop of a tube amp and use the IR’s preamp and the tube amp’s power section. You can also wire it to switch between them! I have a demo of this in my page if you want to jump over and check it out.

This might be what I’m looking for, just want a high quality edge of break up tone and find many modelers out there to complex, also many does not guarantee a good tone either. Even after tweaking, at least not for me:) What would your choice be if you were to recommend a drive pedal in the front and verb delay post? Without hitting some kind of crazy price point in total, also looking for simplicity in those pedals! Great work as always!

@montygibbon19052 ай бұрын
One of the problems with KZbinr videos is they have access to equipment capable of making pretty much anything sound fantastic. Are you still contending with the fizziness not apparent in John's video? That sort of result is pretty alarming given the price/purpose of the little preamp.
@russelltaylor31022 ай бұрын
Seems really good. You got lovely tones out of it, and more. Need to investigate as a straight to pa set up for home and fly gigs. Cleans, dirty, boosts, stuff in the loop could be ideal. Harmoniser though might mess me up. Uuuggh! So much choice these days. The problem is, all the gear reviews of individual products are great but it would be great to hear them as part of a rig with other pedals and how they integrate etc. Not your fault of course, just thinking out loud……😂 Difficult to know if its right or not, purchase wise.

I do have the Synergy Friedman DS module, and clearly, this one does sound better, it has two identical channels (like the Twin Sister), it does have the 3-way gain structure switch, it can load custom IRs (while the Syngery enclosures and heads only have a fixed one that can be turned off, but then you need a separate IR-Loader), plus it has the boost. All things considered, and especially considering the prices of Synergy enclosures and heads), this is the better priced and specced option. Add a good valve power amp, like the Fryette PowerStation, and you basically have a Twin Sister at less than half the price, if you do not want to go direct.
@chrisgmurray36225 ай бұрын
Well, it sounds good to me, wonder what it sounds like without the reverb.
@charlesycoker3 ай бұрын
it's killer, my board is built around it (also had the IR-X) I run it direct or into the FX return of tube amps. I get my sounds whereever I go. I have a Fractal FM3 I was using live for when I had to go direct but that now stays at home and serves as my audio interface. I still love the sounds I get with the FM3 but for live I much prefer the IRD. I use an Empress Echosystem in the FX loop which does both delays and verbs. For amp return I take one of it's stereo outputs as the send back to the amp return. I can either mic the cab or use the direct out. I also have two Friedman amps and will use those as well as needed. FWIW, I use afterarket IRs, settled on the Ownhammer classic rock Greenback with an SM57 for live in mono
@xray6062 ай бұрын
I have the IRX. I like it so far. I was currently using a JCM900 twin, which broke. I knew I likely wouldn't get it back for months, so I got this. And yeah, I don't have the patience for the modelers. This is lighter on gain than the actual JCM. I need a boost to get up to where I want to be for metal. But out of all the other similar things I looked at, I felt it sounded the best, and was the most organic. The only little gripe I have is that I wish it had a loop blend control.
@caesarsrevenge89454 ай бұрын
Really like my IR-D. I've been through a ton of tube amps and have settled into the IR-D with a Fender fr10 that I can also use with an acoustic or bass preamp. There are a ton of useable tones in the IR-D and the majority are quite good. My 2 sense.

Just bought this unit, been playing it for a few days now. Overall I am really impressed with what it can do. Super versatile amp, the cleans are pretty good although I hoped I could get it a bit cleaner. But it is really close. The pedal is also very easy to use and still has plenty of possibilities to tweak and create a variety of presets. The only thing I don’t like about it is the power amp section. You can definitely hear and feel that the power amp is digital. You can hear it especially without any delay and reverb. The power amp is a bit too compressed, takes away some of the nuances when you like to play really dynamic with the volume and pick attack. But I must say I am being really picky here. For sure a great unit, just to keep in mind that when you are used using tube amps into a load box you will feel the difference. I would say a tube amp into a load box is still better. But also a lot more expensive.
@mbsgt1124 ай бұрын
You could plug it into a power amp though if you already have one and enjoy a full tube experience. Tried and definitely opens up the pedal even more.

I love my IR-X, but I've been enamored with the Shirley family of amps for a long time. Needless to say, my IR-D arrives on Monday. I'm excited about running them in parallel. The time of playing live with a drummer has passed for me, and I'm focused on home recording and music production these days. I'm also looking forward to using the effects return on the IR-X to utilize it as an IR loader/power amp section for other preamp pedals like the Science Amplification Mother and the Crazy Tube Circuits Hi-Power. I've got a serious HI-WATT itch that desperately needs scratching. The HI-POWER and Mother both feel like they're lacking something running straight into an IR. I feel like a power amp section, even a simulated one, adds a substantial amount of "weight" that I really miss when absent.

Sounds great to me! I have not played the Friedman IR pedals, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. If I'm at home playing guitar in bedroom/music room, I can hear and feel a difference between a modeler and a mic'd amp. But in a live band mix I can't really tell, and of course there's no way the audience will be able to discern any difference. Even in a live setting I feel that my amps are more inspiring to play, but that could also be a placebo affect.

As owner of the Synergy SYN-50 and some Synergy modules, I wish they'd have some option to re-use some of those modules in this form factor. It'd be cool to reuse the sounds you already like and own when having to go direct. I'm sure this is just a repackaged Synergy module, though it would probably take quite some work to make it easily pluggable.

I have a Walrus AC1 because it's the only modeller I have found that reacts correctly to a treble booster set to 'kill.' The IR-X seemed too gainy for me really, but this thing sounds amazing. I bought the IR-X and returned it immediately. While it sounded good, I found that its clean tones were lacking. I have a (real) Dirty Shirley Mini, which I love but can't gig as our wedding/winery band is all electronic/IEMs. So, I use a Fractal. The IR-D sounds more like my DS....so maybe I'll try that? Then again, I also recently bought a Tonex One. That with a few nice captures I've found is killer....and for $180 a no-brainer for my Fractal backup solution. It's hard to walk away from a Fractal once you've found your sounds and setup....
