Japan being tolerant of scanlations honestly reminds me of the relationship doujinshi artists have with the publishing companies TECHNICALLY it's copyright infiringement, but unless the manga artists complain they don't have an issue with it because they recognise that a lot of mainstream manga artists started by drawing doujinshi and that the sales of doujinshi don'r affect their sales usually and potentially even help them.

Yeah let’s see how many interrogations and rearrests then can handle before they stop denying the charge. Japan has a 98% conviction rate for a reason and it’s not extensive investigation. It seems to work out for them but I personally don’t want to be harassed for months denying a misdemeanor charge until I get sick of it and finally cave in to a confession guilty or not.

Foreigners surprisingly are more resilient towards the Japanese prison system because they aren't as easily intimidated by the Japanese police. While the system itself is draconian due to the cultural barrier as long as they don't sign anything they usually get out with a slap in the wrist.

As a German audience member, I would literally drop dead if I had to wait for the official release. 😫 If I‘m not completely wrong there ain’t digital weekly releases like that. They release the volumes online, but only at the same time as the physical ones. For context it’s not as bad as in other languages (poor Norwegians), but still the Japanese one is at 107 while the German one is at 105. that‘s a difference of about 20 chapters I think and lemme not even start on the anime. To make it short, I don’t know a single One Piece Fan over here who doesn’t read the English scans. But I know a ton who still go out of their way to buy the official releases afterwards.

Although the fan base has become bigger than 10 years ago, manga and anime are still underappreciated here in Norway and Scandinavia. I used to read the official translation weekly. One day this channel started posting early scanlation videos and I had to start reading them. I didn't realize why or how the culture had changed but I remember the moment very well. Now I go a month or so and read mostly scans and then read the latest chapters on Viz during a break week. But I do kinda miss the week long wait because I would read the same official chapter 3 times a week back then just to get by. I am glad this happened and I don' t think scans will be missed if they go away but I am also probably going to read them if they stay.

I don’t think the watermarking/leaker culture is much a business move as you suggest. It seems like these people go into this business purely for attension seeking behavoir. The best example is the Jujutsu Kaisen leaker who will hold onto the leaks constantly posting “5 hours until leaks drop!!!” When he had them the whole time, hosting basically an event where he shares the leaks 1 page at a time, asks everyone to thank him for it constantly, etc. We definately see a lot of these same traits with the one piece leakers as well and people kinda have to give them the attension they want to see the leaks. It makes sense too because no reasonable person would enter into this small profit margin, extremely dangerous field of work unless you have a couple of screws loose

In the case of mangamura in Japan, he made hundreds of millions of dollars every year by placing advertisements on dummy sites. 537.81 million hits, 72,577 titles listed, and 320 billion in total damages. This is just one site targeting Japanese people, there are many similar sites around the world, and considering the worldwide access, the revenue from advertising alone is probably 10 times more than mangamura's revenue.

I'm French and personally i read the chapter on a site that is affiliate to Glénat which is the editor of One piece in France. The chapter is kinda available as promotion then is off fews days later. I'm then buying the collection bit by bit in my life and read it with my coffee in in one hell of a confortable chair :) Started in 2002 as a 10 years old, jesus. I am more of a scan guy myself, just because that's when all the KZbin videos start coming out. Thankfully the nuances between chapters are made clear due to consistent injections of One Piece culture in my KZbin feed. Although I don't always read the official, I do have a Viz membership to read other things in Shonen Jump, and I support the series whenever possible by buying merch and terrorizing all my friends by constantly telling them to read One Piece.

"The correct way" of reading one piece is to read it however you can, but as someone who has read some really bad scans I totally encourage people to try and read from at least ONE source with nice quality images, even if you need to read the same issue twice.

I started to read the manga weekly since Wa No Kuni. Ever before I bought the Manga and was at the stand of these releases. In Germany the Manga is at the Beginning of Egghead. It still bought evey volume of this masterpiece, but weekly I am reading the new chapter with the Manga+ App of Shueisha
