IIRC this story is notable because it deals with bias based on appearances. The Doctor and crew have to side with the scary aliens for once, because the space Barbie doll hotties are really bad. I like when science fiction deals with problems like bias in this type of allegorical story.
@carealoo7443 жыл бұрын
I feel like this story should honestly be remade now. Honestly, I don't think this story is really about judging by appearances. It seems like everyone gives this story credit for that, but in reality, that's not really the case. The way everyone describes it- I thought this story would be The Doctor and co thinking the Dravhins (or however you spell it) were nice only to realize they were wrong and the Rills were the nice ones. But that's not really the case- The Doctor, Steven, and Vicki are all suspicious of the Dravhins from the moment they meet them. Still, I'm glad it's getting the good reception though:)
@_Remorium3 жыл бұрын
It is a bit interesting in hindsight due to what happened behind the scenes because of the Drahvins. Originally they were going to be all male, but Verity Lambert changed them all to women, without any alterations to the script besides obvious changes to the pronouns and (I assume) names, leading them to act like a cold, militaristic race instead of landing on tropes normally seen by a race comprised mostly of women. From what I know, something like this was rather rare back then. It's minor, but it's still pretty neat to think about.

sorry to nitpick but i'm just allowing you to make your complaint, theres a point where you critisize william hartnells costume in the animation and mention they couldn't add textures due to animation reasons... that would be true if it wasn't that this is a puppet rig style of animation which means they basically have a set of drawings preprepaired and animate those, so they 100% could have done more textures on the costume and corrected the tie and waistcoat with barely any indent on the cost as its only a small amount of drawings they need to correct compared to both traditional 2d animation where textures would need to be either pasted awkwardly or redrawn for every frame, and 3d animation where it takes a toll on render time. so basically in the future... oh, wait, erm, in the far future when the animations continue... well that may be not right either if the celestial toymaker rumours are true... ok if in whenever amount of time another puppet rig animation shows up and it's lacking on the quality of the costumes drawings... then critisize the hell out of it as that really doesnt take much at all to fix. hmmmm actually just looking at what i've said i just realised something, the animation teams may be dramatically rushed and such, but with exception to sun and moon and planet 55, they never give themselves time for preproduction, since the fix to the costume in this is a part of the preproduction before the animation process, and infact if they start animating before the preproduction then it all falls apart, why thats interesting is because in the web of fear animation they actually mention how an advantage of it was how they could do both animation and preproduction at the same time with how they could change the costumes and lighting without messing up the animation... and its the same with fury from the deep, the arms being the wrong size should have been a quick spot if they had given more time to the preproduction... but instead it seems they just rush head first into the animation without taking the time to actually setup the things that make it look good. whilst sun and moon basically put everything into the preproduction to get such an advanced model set up for the animatiors but yet it allowed them to get up to 90 shots done per week which is insane! no idea why i've just put all this in a comment but hey food for thought right, maybe we've been critisizing the animation studios for the wrong reasons, nitpicking at the details and not the bigger picture that they don't put enough time into getting these models good looking before animating them, anyways yep. love your content... and I hope the celestial toymaker animation isn't a hoax by a random fan since that looks fricken insane, and critisze the animations as much as you like when it comes to puppet rigs. And have a fab day :)

The one thing that interested me most about the story was the follow on to the mission to the unknown. This was my first exposure to "Galaxy 4" in any fashion. I had never seen the existing videos or recall even seeing clips or screen shots of the serial. It seemed a few simplistic themes run through the story. The writer wants us to question whether beauty equals good and ugly equals bad. The planet blowing up is a set-up to build suspense, like the old countdown timers in action movies. Everything in this serial progresses because doom is imminent. The Rill are terrifying looking. I wonder what kind of evolutionary environment would produce these odd creatures? The ammonia atmosphere was done well and predates that used in Babylon 5 by 30 years. The Chumlies seem incapable of building anything which I overlooked for sake of enjoying the show. Some slim tentacle is not going to be able to build and paint that Rill ship. They were just cute like R2D2. The Drahvins were okay but wearing high heels on a dirt planet surface seems not the best tactical gear. Their ship seemed more like a life pod rather than a full ship. Their guns look somewhat like the ones later used in "The War Games." I may appear to place a lot of hate on this serial but overall, I liked it quite a bit. It was fun and had aspects which made me think.
