Why would I listen to anything Mark Rosewater or any of the talking heads at WotC say when it's been proven several times that they can't be trusted? That's what gets to me the most. The Universes Beyond sets are also going to kill the identity of MTG. Sure, the game itself will live, but it will be reduced to FortNite: the Card Game.

I actually think they should be a combination of the old way and the new way. If it's mechanically unique universes beyond it should absolutely be print to demand. If it's some whacky whatever then just printing what is appropriate and shipping them after the orders are in also works super well

I decent solution for secret lairs at least is to double them up. Either have when a UB secret lair releases, also have the cards in a universes within secret lair selling along side, or have the UB set have the Universes within cards as a bonus.

I really have no issue with universes beyond existing, but it just feels like the in-universe sets are being pushed out, and even a lot of in-universe cards are starting to feel like UB products. Duskmourn is a really cool set imo, but at the same time you have cards that are literally just a flashlight, tv, etc. I want to see more cards that represent cool magic lore, I don't want magic to become the "funko pop" of card games. also 9:45 is a huge point that I don't see brought up nearly enough

At this point, WOTC is just pimpin out the MTG brand in hope of attracting new players, who might not have been attracted by the existing established product. Its the "normiefication" of the business. Its why a lot of games are trying to look like fortnite or disney. Why game mechanics are simplified and streamlined as much as possible to appeal to the average normie. We are getting old and on average they know they don't have to market to us, as you said, I'm sad it's happening, but I'll keep playing magic, I'll buy singles and proxy if it gets stupid expensive. I'm already a john. For each one of us they lose, they get 10 Timmy's spending their money on sealed product cause it has Spiderman on the box. In regards to the Secret Lair: Option 1 has them artificially creating demand by printing a limited amount and capitalizing on FOMO, which is great for the BUSINESS, but bad for CONSUMERS since we're potentially getting scammed by scalpers, bots and other bad actors. Option 2 has them print on demand, which means players will buy at their leisure which is good for CONSUMERS, since we get our product(late, but we get it and don't have to compete with scalpers as much), but bad for the BUSINESS since it has the potential of them just not filling out "quotas" and ending up with a bunch of unsold product. Solution? Caveat Emptor. We stop giving them money just cause new cards are out. We stop buying Secret Lair altogether until they change to more consumer friendly practices. But I know its not as easy as it sounds. My own personal opinion is to find yourself a pod of like minded folks. Rule 0 convos stop being an issue if you all share the sentiment. Talk to people, stop expecting everyone to think like you do. If no one is making an effort to create the pod, start it yourself. And if you don't like it, that's sad, but that's life. Things change. WOTC is a business first. Sunk Cost Fallacy is a thing. Maybe try Lorcana and brew a Midrange Goofy deck or w/e.

I agree with all the points here, I think. I haven't liked the art on most of the Secret Lairs for a while, and I don't care about Marvel, but it really sucks for the people who want those products. I wonder how feasible it would be to do a hybrid of the two Secret Lair systems? Maybe have a limited run of pre-printed cards, then have a print-to-demand for anyone else who missed that run or who doesn't mind waiting. As for the Universes Beyond, I don't inherently have an issue with it. It's a fun idea for those who like those series, but I don't want Magic to be a hodge podge of a hundred different IPs. I play Magic for Magic, not Spider-Man or Dr. Who. Sprinkle it in and give us in-universe options. And don't shove out the foundation to make room for everything but the world that made the game in the first place. I agree on the art, too. There's something slightly off about it. I thought it was just me, but I'm glad to hear I'm not crazy.

So Magic’s different planes make for different ways that mana colors work, different types of creatures, and unusual reality mechanics. My question is: since most of Magic’s creature types are fictional, why are dinosaurs OK? People dislike Marvel and Dr Who but they’re fine with D&D? War hammer uses guns and we’re fine with that? I Guess my ? Is, where is the line? Each plane in magic makes for a whole different set of rules and stories, but it seems like some players don’t like certain “planes” because we kinda know what the characters there are and how they do. To me it feels the same as going to a new plane, it’s just one that we (humans outside Alara) are familiar with. Dig under it, work around it, get over it.

Some UB stuff works without universe within versions like assassins creed and LOTR but I think those are more of the exception. Marvel doesn't fit and SpongeBob definitely doesn't fit they have pushed so far from the classic formula that most of us fell in love with. I've been so hyped for Foundations as it's feels like the most "Magic" set we have had in years.

I honestly don’t see myself playing this game past 2026. I’ve been OK with sets like D&D (which didn’t even feel like UB at all) and LoTRs because it was so fantasy rich and kinda felt more in place than Neon Dynasty. Perhaps this is hypocritical of me but Fallout, Marvel, and all the UB sets/Secret Lairs that don’t even try to fit MTGs theme just aren’t cards I want to play with or against. The fact that now half of future MTG sets won’t be MTG and the sets that are MTG will likely continue to have awful writing just crushes me.

As a player yes print enough to get the product out to all interested Business view: overprint means increased liability and increase for potential loss if not received well Middle ground: first print run sells out cool; print to demand button with "warning ⚠️ that it might take longer for those that didn't make it to release sale." Also on reprint into mtg universe absolutely agree. That's how I got the jund zangief as maarika. Kind of what I'm hoping for with the news. Like ikoria with the gozilla variants not straight up Spiderman. Or at least make Spiderman mtg style or like old comic black white with some color highlights.

Out of universe IPs as part of standard feels wrong, but the only upside I can think of is that it should make all the sets draftable and that can make for cool and thematic selfcontained sets.

I waited like a fool for nothing. I think any limited secret lair should be limited to the number of days it is out, so day one 1 unit, day 2 if any left up to 2 units, day 3 3 units until sell out. I have assume for awhile they will do a masters set for universes beyond cards bc it would be impossible to reprint them all in any useful way. I know zero people who started playing off a universes beyond and stayed past that ip.

I totally agree with your view on the universes beyond LOTR and WH40K cards look like they belong in magic while all the others don’t really fit into the magic world with one exception : final fantasy absolutely can look like it belongs in magic. The older games were very much D&D / medieval fantasy and the later ones like FF7,8,X ect are the mixture of high fantasy and tech, FF7 cards would totally fit into Kaladesh & Ravnica. Midgar itself looks like ravnica fused with kamigawa neon dynasty. Even the most recent game FF16 is a step back from steampunk and more in line with the older games.

9:05 am (so 5 min after the drop) I was in the queue. At first there was an error they were working on, then it showed a wait time of "over an hour". 5 hours later (at just before 2pm). It was my turn. My cart was empty because everything was sold out. The entire thing is just crazy. How can you only print enough that it's sold out in 5 minutes? How can it take 5 hours to find that out? Why would you not notify people waiting "in line" that their cart has been emptied due to selling out before they get to the front of the line? The entire thing is a joke.

Managed to grab a non foil black panther because everything else was sold out (which I also had to wait 2 hours in queue for) but wanted a nonfoil bundle to divide between me and my mates and storm foil for myself. Alas I got the pity prize but I guess a pity prize is still better than nothing. I liked Black Panther and wanted to build a deck around him so it could've been worse.

For my part, i think universe within card should be mandatory for secret lair drops and print in magic ip sets not just as a bonus sheet like the list or special guest. Universe beyond set on the other hand are a good thing that bring people to Magic that never played before. Exemple with the assassin creed set that convinced a friend to finally try Magic.

50% of Magic is now just not Magic to me anymore. It really is the Fortnight of card games at this point. But at least in Fortnight you can choose to just not wear the skins. In Magic for the vast majority of Universes Beyond cards there isn’t an in universe option and that’s wack in my opinion. I want to continue to explore the Magic universe. Another thing to add is even the sets that have been in universe this year have felt like gimmicky soft Universes Beyond. For example Outlaws was the cowboy universe, Karlov was the goofy Guess Who set, Bloomburrow was the fluffy furry set. And those were all “in universe” sets. None of it has felt like Magic the Gathering this year and it makes me sad man.

I stopped along time ago. Never got rid of my stuff wen I played competitive modern. I heard of the LOTR set a year after it dropped after actually experienced commander with a faerie pre con. I began to brew a sauron, the dark lord aristocrat deck. N that was it that spark was re-lite. I got the iron man and captain bundle in thought to have a marvel style artifact deck to add to my deck choices. Captain America is my commander and iron man is running in the 99. I'm just missing the counterspell which I'm hoping the give out any over flow in the saratoga comic con 🙏.

As for the secret lair, just do the print to order again. I know it might drive down some rare card prices, but honestly SL is supposed to be just for looks anyway. Let people have their fun stuff. As for Universes Within: YES PLEASE! Sadly while Universes Beyond wasn't horrible, HALF is too much! I would love to see Universes within made of these cards, especially since not only can we see some interesting and creative characters made to fill in the in-universe blanks, but we can also use them to give characters from the Canon that never got a card a card finally. Give Garth's companions and enemies from the Arena book some cards. Give Rafiq's Rhox best friend who sacrificed himself to save Rafiq and Bant a card. Give even Rat from War of the Spark a card... maybe. Still kinda bitter about that book. But anyway, there are opportunities here.

I got into magic from the lord of the rings set. I'm 100% with you, cards with terrible art I just won't use. For example, I really like the suspend mechanic, and its seen a lot in the Doctor Who set. But all the art in the set is just random people to me, there is no interesting commanders for me to use. They should definitely have in universe versions for the more realistic universe beyond sets ie, Marvel, Doctor Who, and even some of Assassins Creed

I started playing Mtg around 1995…I played it because it was an awesome game not because it had an awesome story or great characters…for that matter it didn’t really have either of those. Think UB is fine and if it’s bringing new players to the game that’s great. I agree it’s nice and preferable for the IPs to be some kind of fantasy/sci-fi theme. Didn’t totally get your artwork point…maybe because I’m a bit old school and there used to be more varied art styles in the game…but even now there are showcase cards and secret lairs that regularly do the same thing…the Wolverine card doesn’t look like comic book artwork to me.

I love some of the nostalgia of Universes Beyond - Lord of the Rings, Warhammer and D&D. For me the balance has been right the last 2 years and I have loved getting into the old plains of MTG (e.g. Ixalan) just as much. However, I agree looking forward it seems a bit much and means I will be skipping more sets to avoid those I have no connection with.

I think Doctor Who somewhat works, because Time Lords and Planeswalkers aren’t massively removed. This is before we look at all the monsters and artifacts etc.. Granted, I can still see why people don’t agree with this, and it’s definitely influenced by my being a Doctor Who fan. One problem is that these are now standard sets. 40k, Doctor Who and Fallout didn’t feel intrusive because they were Commander sets, and that format has much more whack mixing of themes. I am not a Standard player, but it seemed to me to have a stronger core identity because it’s not just the Magic IP, but the recent chapters of the story; multiple Phyrexia sets played through lots of Phyrexia cards being in current rotation. The way to change this is to protest with our wallets. If we don’t want to see Magic become overwhelmingly universes beyond, we need to be buying the in-universe sets and NOT the UB ones. WotC will go where the money goes, and so long as says like LotR set the sales records, that’s what we will get.

My only real issue is the idea of half of magic being UB. I'm not a doctor who fan, but I got really excited seeing some of the cards and precons. Probably the only UB stuff they've done so far that I'll refuse to stick in my decks is SpongeBob. I actively dislike the show. But even then... It's not like I'm going to refuse to play with someone else who has the cards. But the idea that half of magic sets will be UB... doesn't sit well with me. Part of magic is its worlds and story. To not have that in half of its sets... makes me real uncomfortable. I think we've descended the slippery slope and we need to climb back up it a bit.

I don't buy any Secret Lairs. If I want to play a Card I would ask my playgroup if it's okay if I proxxy it. And I agree with you I want the art to "feel" like magic. Random dude in Blue Jeans is just not Magic. I love 40k but the Space Marines don't fit in Magic for me either. Tyranids and Necrons on the other Hand fit 100%.

As a longtime MtG player, I don't mind SL. What I hate is their model for selling. I got into the queue at exactly 12EST. Waited for hours, only to get in and see my desired drop (Storm) as temporarily unavailable. I refreshed and refreshed and luckily it was back in stock. But limited printing method is just dumb.

I went in within 10 seconds of it opening, and I had to wait almost 3h in line, when I was 5 mins away from entering they displayed message that the arcane signet ran out, dude how many people could have possibly gone in before me? Well I was browsing Twitter afterwards looking for people mad at them for the same reason and it results that there was a link that let you skip the line and they got all the cards they wanted and got all the arcane signets whilst I had to wait 3hours to not get my arcane signet even tho I spent over 200usd and seeing the time going from 40 mins to "more than one hour"

I don't care of marvel UB or secret lair but...if I was a shareholder I would be furious against wotc. They really don't know how to make money. Some peoples need to be fired. If I get mtg UB , I try to get reprint. I don't like stuff or art that don't feet with mtg. If I count the cards from warhammer40000,assassin creed, doctor who I own....49 cards. Wotc make me save money thx

I think this new 50% of all magic cards decision is a pretty huge mistake. I agree with the howling abomination approach, I think they should release in universe versions of every universes beyond card that is so far off theme it's distracting; such as spiderman or spongebob. I love those IPs but, I don't want to see them in a commander game. The idea of Patrick star beating an Eldrazi titan deck makes me...upset.

How are you going to make them stay ? The more diverse the audience, the more likely any given set/theme is gonna be hated by the majority.

When TWD came out, I was excited. I love the show and I could run my favorite character as my commander. Then it just continued... And I was starting to get on board with those who were against it. Then they brought in Jurassic Park, which I am obsessed with. So I was excited again. But now that they are making WHOLE sets around it and it's standard legal, I feel like Magic the Gathering is dead and we are in the era of Fortnight the Gathering.

You know, the Guy in Blue jean is an iconic character of the oldest sci fi show... You missed a point: Connecting the card to a storyline,a universe. I am happy to see some characters from existing sci fi or fantasy show because they got storyline you can't rely on. In my opinion the Magic storyline is getting Bad like: "somehow bolas as return. Somehow the eldrazi as been defeated in the multiverse" Hey do you want a 14th version of jace and the sentinel? Lets have a some Scooby Doo cards instead AT least it will be funny🙂 And i am not into the "secret lair lottery"

Based. The universe beyond thing isn't so bad itself, but the universes they chose... 40K and LOTR are okay but FF and Sponge Bob... I'm 100% sure there are more lore friendly sets to collab with - Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, Game of Thrones etc
