My wife and I renovated our first 3 dumpy houses ourselves … and we’ve been there. Nothing more soul crushing than seeing hours and hours of work messed up and having to spend so much time getting back to square one. The only good thing I can say about it, you’ll be the sailors others seek out for advice before they start those types of projects. That and you’ll never make that mistake again. 😊

My New Favourite Channel. You Guys are definitely building the #1 Channel of Sailing. Keep up the great plots and stories, the great filming and editing with the right music, the sincere smiles and the truth of both of you. Don't lose each other and remember when things are bad, the most of us will never feel in the flesh what it's like living in a cozy space that moves and takes you places, surrounded by waves, sun and sea breeze. Don't let this channel be boring. Go Go Go...

Feel for you'all. Been there n done that on a 50 chevy with lots of nooks n crannies. Catalyst was bad so like yours the undercoat never cured. Nothing like the sq ft of your boat but aviation stripper like you used did the trick along with a boat load of chop sticks n scrub brushes. Would slice up the chop sticks- bamboo- to dig out the cervices without damaging the original metal plating. Not many flat surfaces on that truck

@@js7127 I too have had similar situation when painting automobile but after the Paint Stripper did it's job lifting I removed it with a pressure washer. It made the tedious and time consuming task of the final removal a breeze and kind of satisfying. Something to consider should you or someone else be faced with that disappointing task.

Having watched all of 'We Sail', 'Sailing SV Delos' and a bit of 'Parlay Revival', I was initially skeptical about this channel thinking 'These guys are more in to having fun then hard grafting and are just playing at it until the money runs out'. Yes, but as a rental or a guest, unless you're prepared for the normal and surprise expenses. Otherwise, prepare to walk frequently out to your slip with a bucket of money and just dump it in. This applies to power and sail boats. I've owned sailboats for about 20 years now, and a comment from a fellow boat owner has always rung true, "If it's not broken now, it's on its way to breaking soon...and will do so at the worst possible time". Here one of MANY examples: We sailed our Catalina 30 several miles out from Back Creek near Annapolis on a glorious afternoon (we how have a 43-foot version of this Beneteau in this video). Was near the Bay bridge when the wind went dead calm. Fired up the iron genny...a fabulously-reliable diesel that I'd religiously maintained with regular change of filters, oil, antifreeze, anode, impeller. After about a minute or so I noticed steam (not smoke), coming out the exhaust, and no water. Seems the seals on the internal water pump decided to fail...so there was no way to cool the engine for the near-hour trip back to the slip as the sun was fading. Our backup, a 10HP outboard for the dinghy that was on a transom-mount on the stern...decided it didn't want to fire up at the moment (my arm almost went numb from pulling the cord over and over). Hesitant to tell you what we did as I'm sure there'll be critical remarks. Ran the engine anyway at a few RPM's above idle and before it got way too hot, kept spraying fresh water on it until steam came up. Then every ~15 minutes we'd shut it down to cool off for a bit and repeat. Yes, if you're not careful it's a great way to crack the block. Thinking about it later I think I could've "MacGyver'd" the small spare bilge pump to bypass the engine's freshwater pump. One lesson learned, on an older boat...have a spare freshwater pump for the engine. You'll eventually use it anyway to replace the old one at some point as regular maintenance. Then there was the time I installed a 2-micron fuel filter (too fine), that ~20 hours of engine time later finally clogged up and choked out the engine only 300 yards from returning to the slip on Back Creek with a mild breeze coming directly from our destination. Then there was the time we let out the big 170 jib too fast with the brand new Selden furler, and when a hellacious storm very suddenly came up we couldn't bring it in because the line had overlapped on itself and totally jammed up the furler so badly I had to drop the violently-flapping jib...into the water. Then there was the time we were first entering the bay from Back Creek and found that the wind had all of a sudden ran up to 30+ knots with insane gusts. Whitecap city. Raised the main barely halfway and reefed it. Started to unfurl the jib to maybe 25% when a gust yanked it from me and it went all the way out. Started to bring it back in when another gust shredded the stitching completely from the three upper panels of the sail. Not pretty. I could go on....

I feel your pain for all you went through with this mess. I just wish someone at the hardware or paint stores had told you about wallpaper stripper blades. It’s a razor like you were using, except the blades are 4 inches wide and the blade holders have a nice comfortable handle to hold on to. Either way, you did a great job and I hope things go much mer smoothly with the rest of your projects. Keep up the good work and attitude!
@christopherjonh9458
@christopherjonh9458 Жыл бұрын
That was my first thought...why not use one of those wider blades. I've used them on other projects. But it might be that the curvature of most(?) of the hull's surface may have prevented an even contact along the width of the blade...with only the middle area making proper contact. One possible solution might have been to carefully bend the blade so it conform to the curvature. But then again, the curvature CHANGES to varying degrees along the entire hull...and from the bow it's actually pretty flat for the first 10 feet or so as you go back towards the stern. The top ~20% of the hull stays fairly flat along the entire length, but the middle section definitely changes shape. Either way, what a headache!

Great recovery and great attitudes. Sectioning it off as you did made a large job seem much more manageable. I have had similar situations when painting automobiles. I found using the paint thinner and allowing it some time to lift the primer worked well. I used a pressure washer to do the rest. With the size of your boat I would imagine using a pressure washer could have been a more expedient alternative to doing it with a razor blade inch by inch. You both are very interesting and pleasant to watch and are inspiring to your audience. Thank you! RFD 04/03/2023

Congrats on getting the primer off the boat. Regarding the new water heater, you may want to check if it comes with (and needs) a sacrificial anode even with 316SS construction. Sometime back put in a Kuna brand heater ,came without an anode, but $30 option for an anode that will allow heater to last many years

Honestly after having painted over 10 boats I'd never recommend anyone to use a 1 part paint. The labor to do the job is insane, the cost difference on the last boat I priced it out on was $500. 1 part paints have much shorter lifespans and are softer so they scratch easily and fade quicker. 2 part paints like Alexseal can be wet sanded buffed and repaired easily and last so much longer than a 1 part its a waste of money to do anything else. As for scrappers get a 3" carbide scrapper with a knob up by the blade so much quicker than the razor blades and saves your hands a bit. Who would've guessed actual paint stripper would've been the best choice for stripping paint! Sometimes the cheapest solution is paying for the right product and not wasting time experimenting. I know it's hard when you've got limited funds though. Glad to see you guys working it out.

Thanks you two! Now I know how my exact same freezer/fridge is built into our Cyclades 43. It does suck up a lot of much-needed counter space in the galley. But even though our 43 has a very similar interior (sans split V-berth and center island), there is additional counter space nearly the same size immediately aft, with cabinet space underneath. I believe you have a dedicated shower in your boat instead of this secondary counter area, but you have a center island with area next to the freezer instead. Noticed that your old fridge electronic control unit appeared to be fairly new (white cigar box @11:42). Ours recently failed and they're about $300 or so at retail, though can be as low as $100 new on Ebay. Would've at least paid to ship it to me...but this video is old and well, that ship has sailed.

Yep! Side openings are for power boats and RV's. I think the only time I've seen side-door fridge/freezers on sailboats the doors faced to the front or back of the boat. This was recorded some time ago...so I imagine they're already discovered this mistake: "Wow, we're cranking along now...30-degree heel to starboard! Honey? Can you grab me a cold beer?" And the fridge proceeded to empty itself all over the sole.

The power situation on a modern boat with lots of solar and big batteries is also a lot different than when it was designed. Convenience at anchor may be a higher priority now. Also, a fridge that works is a lot more useful than a broken one you can't afford to fix.

Should have gone with Awl Grip primer 545 and alw grip top coat. You can just role the 454 and role and tip the top coat 3 times and you would have a great job. Best of luck.

We did that. We applied one of the first copper epoxy anti fouls. Well, it did not work. We out hauled the boat (52 feet 33 tons ) We had to scrape the whole underwater. Epoxy, fully hardened. We found a scraper that did 1/8 inch sweep . Yes I know what you went through.

If you are searching for the most aggressive solvent, try MEK, methyl ethyl ketone. Still is a solvent so evaporation still is fast.

Terrible, tough, tedious, terrific. Great deals to offset extra yard time, primer and paint.

I’m sure you two and E.E. Are not the only ones doing this via KZbin. Seeing Jade and Bret and y’all working so hard for such a great payoff is so wonderful! When my wife and I were your age, I had taken over my Dad’s little Spirit 23 when he’d moved to NYC and then La Jolla. Our main thing back then though, was to see the Grateful Dead as many times as possible and sail on other weekends. I don’t think I would have had the courage or confidence- (sometimes just blind ignorance) that you four see to often take in stride. I’m very serious when I say that you are a credit to your generation!

I also meant to say that I’ve seen one other couple (on a different continent) trying this. But he has ended up doing All of the work while she bitches and moans while filming. Uncool compared to y’all.

I used gel paint stripper to take paint off my old Oldsmobile 442 where someone used house paint on and NO they didn't use a roller it was runny as all get out. Sascha is actin like a farm girl and they are tough as hell and with her attitude she is a true unicorn. Hopefully yall can handle being together 24/7/365 except for family visits. RAFF keep your grind on man. Yall keep each other smiling as you are doing. See you later on today!!!

One thing i have learned in my 60 years is that you have to know more than the "professionals", If my memory is not wrong you were recommended to use that primer by a "Professional", But right now you are running the most interesting boating channel on youtube and i hope that you will be successful in your life's

Hey guys try citrus strip or smart strip put it on thick and cover with plastic or this one company dumond I think sells a bonded paper to cover the stripper to keep from drying out. With these two strippers the hotter it is outside the better it works. I removed almost 20 coats of bottom paint previous owners never sanded back just kept adding paint . I actually did it when it was kinda cold outside let it sit for 24 to 48 hours scraped it off in sheets with a 10 inch drywall mud knife. Just alittle tip for next time or for others dealing with paint removal. And great videos keep em coming

I really admire your stamina ! As for the primer your explanation may be alright the data sheet should tell you that but a friend of mine has had the same problem and it turned out that the dealer has sold him a batch long over its shelf life. What really concerns me is the rudder being full of salt water. You must be aware that it is well possible that the inner steel frame that is welded to the rudder shaft and to which the two halves of GRP forms have been mounted some way have suffered severely from corrosion. I know you are very resourceful but that is IMHO a case for a specialist. On my 35 footer I've had the same problem and had the rudder built anew (reusing the metal parts because they were still alright) for around 1200 euros (~$). You can't definitely not risk loosing the rudder in the middle of an ocean, sorry. You can do it yourself but it needs a lot of knowledge, tools and time. One last thing is the fridge. Your video suggests that it opens towards the boats center line and towards starboard. So, when being on port bow (which may be so for days in blue water sailing) you can't open the fridge w/o things falling out. I can say from years of experience you will be going to HATE it. The very last remark, you would need to travel far and wide to find another woman like Sasha.
