I hung out with John Birch in '76 . He made guitars and PU's for Tony. I got him to make me a guitar with one of Tony's PU's at the bridge. I learnt a lot about guitar construction and especially wood. John had a lab where he compared the sounds of different woods. Very cool but too long to explain here. At the time he was comparing which woods gave the most sustain comparing Fenders. Gibsons and his own designs.

I love 18 out of 20 albums (I consider both Seventh Star and Devil you know Sabbath albums), my favourite being Sabbath bloody Sabbath. The experience Pete had with Paranoid I had with the debut. I started at 9 with Metallica, then at 12 discovered Iron Maiden and shortly after that Priest. I looked into their influences and obviously Sabbath came up, so I bought the debut. In the following months I collected the entire Ozzy era and after read Ozzys autobiography and got into his solo stuff. For my 13th birthday I got Tonys autobiography and decided to form a band, which I did shortly after that. Also bought all 5 Dio fronted albums as well.

I'm with you Hack on "Dehumanizer." It is crushing and brutally heavy and angry. It always felt like an updated throwback to their earlier and heavier days. It also at times feels like a 90's version of Born Again. Dio never sounded angrier and the overall doom and gloom feel was and still is so appealing to me.

love the way pete describes how paranoid the album effected him when he first heard it. for me it was their first album which i bought back in the day from one of those back of the magazine record clubs where you got 10 or so albums for a couple of bucks. listening to that record as a 13 or 14 year old scared the hell out of me and changed my musical life. i went on to be lucky enough to have a reasonably successful career for many years as a musician , well a drummer , but you get my drift. also was very lucky to see black sabbath on the sabotage tour. still one of the best shows i ever saw no doubt , and although black sabbath kinda ended for me after the "holy six" first 6 records , i still hold them near and dear to my heart. thanks for the show guys.

Vol 4 is my favourite The reason some people don’t like Paranoid is because it was their biggest hit and they’re sick of it. If it wasn’t a hit or was just a deep track then they’d love it. It’s a classic, maybe the greatest riff Iommi ever wrote, the simplest riffs are often the best. Just my opinion.

Black Sabbath is my favorite band (along with Thin Lizzy), and it would be so hard for me to pick my top 10. Tomorrow the list could change! I don't have misplaced reverence for the Ozzy era, I love it all for different reasons. My favorite songs are You Won't Change Me, Snowblind, Sign of the Southern Cross, When Death Calls, Angry Heart/In Memory, and Iron Man live with Dio. I do not rank the Paranoid album as high as the public seems to, unfortunately. It is good, it just doesn't click for me as much as some others do.Thank you, guys! 🤘 P.S.- I can tell you why the Paranoid song is so popular. It simplifies what Black Sabbath is about for the ears of regular people. They can relate to losing somebody and feeling down. And it does so while still being upbeat. It predicts punk rock by about six or seven years, and people cherish their first encounter with dark and heavy music.

Enjoyed watching your latest Led Zeppelin video was going thru your older videos, nice to see you covering Black Sabbath as well. I came from Sea of Tranquility so you can thank Pete for another viewer. I own 7 Black Sabbath albums so I'll rank those. I'll be honest with you I'm only really familiar with the early Ozzy years and the 2 80s Dio records. I haven't checked out the Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, or Tony Martin eras. 1. Paranoid (I know it's overplayed but this is the album that opened the doors for me to heavier music, huge nostalgia points, I actually enjoy the song Paranoid) 2. Master of Reality (It's a short album but it's pretty much flawless, agree with Martin on the length) 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Some of my favorite riffs, Ozzy sounds better on other records) 4. Heaven and Hell (I think this might be Dio's best work out of his extensive discography, some of my favorite Iommi solos-Die Young and Neon Knights) 5. Sabotage (The best Ozzy has sounded in my opinion, I agree with your thoughts on this one- it sounds phenomenal and each instrument is given room to breathe, love the bass work) 6. Mob Rules (I disagree with you on this one, still a solid album but feels like a Heaven and Hell Part 2 which isn't a bad thing it just seems a little derivative) 7. Black Sabbath (Still trying to find their sound, kind of raw, I never really liked the production but I understand it's a debut. I heard they recorded it in 12 hours which is pretty incredible) I'd be interested in watching a conversation about Metallica and Iron Maiden (assuming you like and listen to those bands) if you haven't covered them already. Another solid video. Good job.

Headless Cross 13.Tyr 14. Cross Purposes 15.Technical Ecstasy 16.Forbidden 17. Never Say Die. 'On Johnny Blade Bill Ward's drumming is so killer on this track. And well done on the rest of the album as well. Trying out difference yet well crafted sound on the album. Overlooked insights. __________________ Would have made Heaven & Hell No.1 thus Sabotage really rules with Ozzy and his vocals and the production and sound is so good. Iommi nails the album well and the rest of band IMO. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You know the thing got to see Ozzy twice once in 81 and then in 82. As to Black Sabbath saw them 3 times. In 80 the Heaven & Hell tour. 86 Seventh Star tour. Ray Gillen had the vocals when I saw them for Glenn. Then the Black Sabbath Reunion Tour in 98. The Heaven and Hell tour being No. 1. Reunion tour No.2 Seventh Star No.3 it was good just not no.1 W.A.S.P. opened on Seventh Star tour On Reunion tour Pantera and Deftones opened. Heaven and Hell tour Vinny Appice was there on drums. Ronnie was so killer with his vocals it so made you feel the songs. On the song of "Black Sabbath" I could feel ones body with his feeling and growl in line 'Satan sitting there he's smiling- Ha Ha Ha Ha. ' Dio was so much in command of the performance as well as the whole band was this night. Sammy Hagar opened as well as Aldo Nova. Super show.

It’s hard to choose Sabbath’s best album, it’s between “Paranoid” and “Sabotage” for me... I’ve been listening to “Sabotage” since I bought the album in 1976 after I bought “We Sold sour Souls” a few months earlier... I go back and forth between the two all the time, so for me it’s a tie...

all of you guys are NUTS! I always hear the argument about certain albums like Paranoid of "I've listened to it to death" as if that's some kind of mark against it, when by definition that means It's a great Album!!! Paranoid is definitely top 3 if not #1 of ANY Black Sabbath album list.... It's essentially a greatest hits album and set the template for all the Sabbath albums to come after it... And it broke the band and was a huuuuge commercial success even to this day! I get that you can have your favorites but how can you deny it? Hand of Doom, Farias, War Pigs, their two most identifiable songs Iron and Paranoid with Iron bering one of the most recognizable metal songs ever and also noone mentioned Planet Caravan, a cool mellow track to break it up... Electric funeral one Ozzy's cool crunching vocals with a wicked riff and solo and lyrics... and the instrumental, bill's playing... like c'mon.... Great job though on the video! love listening to these guys discuss music. :)

Great show, I'll freely admit that I'm one of those strange contrarians that love Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die both for their sound and the songs on them, and they were also the first two Sabbath records I ever bought, along with a compilation called Attention Black Sabbath Vol 2 that has Sweet Leaf, Black Sabbath, Rat Salad, Electric Funeral, After Forever, War Pigs and Fairies Wear Boots on it which apart from a few more songs off Master and Paranoid had just about all I needed to have from early Sabbath. I'm also more of an Iommi and Dio than Ozzy fan and think Tony Martin gets short shrift. Cozy Powell is also one of my favourite drummers. I also agree with Martin in that no matter how many times I listen to it , apart from Snowblind, I dont really remember how the songs on vol 4 go - when I lsten to it its great but not in my top 10, though I can see why its so highly rated. And I honestly dont dislike any Sabbath album including Forbidden which if you can get past the rapping is still a pretty good album. So my top ten in order as of today - 1. Techical Ecstasy 2. Vol 4 is #1 - first Sabbath album I heard and it changed my life. Then, Mob Rules, Master of Reality, Heaven & Hell, Sabotage. Wheels of Confusion is my favorite BS song. Bill Ward takes charge!

It's great how opinion differ. Some surprises and some shocks. Pete trying to hold in his laughter when Martin says Never Say Die 🤣🤣 and he plays that and TE the most 😳 damn!! Pete my No1 is Vol4 too, first Sabbs album i ever owed.

Interesting comments from everyone. Don't see though how Martin can omit the wonderful debut and their keynote second album from any top ten of Black Sabbath. These are the foundations of their music for everything they went on to do. They are also marvellous heavy rock albums that defined a genre and which still stand up today for their creativity and originality.

I'm with Pete all the way on the Born Again album. The moment I saw the album cover I knew it was Black Sabbath. The songs on it have great titles and killer lyrics. I heard the CC remake of Zero The Hero first which helped me to embrace this album. Trash pissed off the PMRC. This album made a mark on 1983. Ian made his mark as the singer on this album and he never sang for Black Sabbath again.

About Gillan's voice: Gillan's voice was damaged BEFORE Sabbath, and he was advised by doctors to stop singing and touring for a few months (9 months if my memory serves well), but of course he didn't and damaged it even more and probably for good (although I believe he recovered/ started singin differently around 1993). Cheers.

Sabbath is my favorite band and Sabotage and Vol-4 are the best. I don't get why Sabotage is so underrated. It seems to be getting more love as time goes on. Ignoring Sabotage in Black Sabbath's discography would be like ignoring Physical Graffiti in Led Zeppelins. Dang I didn't know Martin also made that comparison.
