The bedplate self aligns extremely accurately on the S65 and many other BMW engines. It would be very unusual to line hone, unless you were using a mismatched block and bedplate combo.
@EvolveAutomotive2 ай бұрын
The bed plate was machined for the dry sump setup so this almost brought the whole project to a grinding halt. After some research and speaking with industry contacts BMW Motorsport appear to sell a dry sump kit for the S65 which includes a bed plate (very possibly this exact kit we removed). The fact BMW sell that gave Mr VANOS the idea to try an S65 bed plate that hasn’t been machined. After checking all tolerances and clearances, ensuring the engine turns over etc he was happy with the results meaning we could move forward with the project. Time will tell but it seems to be running well so far.

As always, it's an excellent build. I read in the comments below that the dry sump had to go because it is RHD. But if it was LHD, would it be okay? Also, as you mentioned about the P65, is there anything special besides the cam profile, the dry sump, and displacement? Will this engine have the rod-bearing issue, too? I appreciate everyone at Evolve and can't wait to hear the answers to my questions :)
@EvolveAutomotive2 ай бұрын
It would be easier to have run dry sump in a LHD car, but would still have required a 10-15 litre oil tank in the passenger footwell (we were advised pressure drop from having it mounted in the boot would be too great) which considering this car won’t spend its life on track with slick tyres and high G force was a compromise we didn’t think was worth it for a road car. There is very little available information on this engine, in the future we may fully disassemble the engine to really see what’s inside and compare to a conventional S65.

What are the names of the songs you played during the dry-sump removal and the engine install? Huge tunes! -- I assume since you now have an S65 block and P65 bedplate, you're in a rosy position to develop an S65 to P65 conversion kit with different dry sump tank ports, and maybe an S85 version. -- Gee, since you have a P65 with S65 parts on top, I guess you can dyno it to see what it does, and then when your dry-sump conversion parts are finally available, we can find out how much power the actual P65 parts are worth.
