We Ran Out of Fuel on a Remote Wilderness Road | Trans-Labrador Highway Overlanding Adventure - E.6
Leaving an abandoned campground near Northwest River, Labrador we continued East on a remote stretch of the Trans-Labrador Highway as we headed for the coast and Port Hope Simpson. Early on in the day's travel, we knew we didn't have enough fuel to make it. Fortunately, we had a backup plan. The following day we, took a side route into St. Lewis and Iceberg Alley driving as far east as possible in mainland North America. Even more amazing, we saw a big Bull Moose Crossing the Highway and hiked with kids into a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is also a National Historic Site of Canada. This spot is known as the Boney Shore and is near Red Bay, Labrador. Here, you can find hundreds of old Right and Bowhead whale bones which were left there by Basque whalers who processed them there in great numbers for about 70 years here beginning in about 1600 which is about 400 years ago. They stopped because the whale numbers declined due to overharvesting and it was no longer feasible to make the long voyage from the shores of France and Spain from where the Basque hail.

I went to Newfoundland in 2002. We were there for 5 days and traveled from Channel Port aux Basques to St Anthony along the western coast. We didn't have enough time to travel east of there. And I'd always wanted to see what Labrador looked like. Thank you for sharing Labrador with us. And I can't wait to see your next video, when you're actually on Newfoundland. I want to go back REALLY badly! ❤️🇨🇦

I love everything about this family adventure. I get tickled hearing Hudson mimic Dad. Love how precious North & Wesley look while napping in the back. Enjoy seeing the beautiful scenery you see. That was so neat stumbling upon whale bones that old. Hearing the history was fascinating. Good to see Tori was able to get a rest in while you drive. She;s a very beautiful strong lady. Looking forward to next week.

Enjoyed seeing the quaint little fishing villages. Reminded me of when I lived in CT along the ocean and there were lobster cages in backyards. We would go to the beach and the kids would go crabbing for tiny crabs, then take them to the bait shop and get money for them. We'd then head directly to the candy store where they would spend their earnings. Those are some great memories. Enjoying your family adventure. Oh no! You missed the ferry!

Thanks a lot and ya, that was very cool. It was a major seasonal Basque whaling station from about 1600 to 1670. The main product was whale oil which they’d render there and those rocks laid out like tiles that I pointed out were likely part of a 400 year old rendering station.

Always exciting to be running out of gas, but I love that every camping spot is better than the last. Your dog, North, sat up watching the scenery for eight days straight. A friend sent the link to this video, you could say this is home to me, my neck of the woods. I live in Goose Bay but originally from Williams Harbour, a resettled community 20 miles out the bay from Port Hope Simpson. My brother is part owner of the gas station you were to in Port Hope Simpson and that was one of our boats tied to the dock, Brady Mariner. That pier where you had your morning coffee is a great place to fish trout during a rising tide. Really enjoyed the video and subbed, and I will finish by saying I left many times without a full tank and nearly paid the price for it :) Cheers from the Bigland, Labrador..

Awesome as always but you have to love Jim’s “I hate this bit**” response to the trucks voice navigator…we have all said it!

The highway is awesome. When I was up there 15 years ago it was a dirt trail. Cheers from da ROCK!
