Trans-Labrador Hwy Remote Overlanding Adventure E. 3 - Northern Québec Route 389 to Station Uapishka
Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 with off road teardrop trailer in tow we head north on Northern Québec Route 389 to the Trans-Labrador Highway on this overland adventure that would take us through Labrador and then the island of Newfoundland. Camping out and family fun for everyone was the plan as my wife Tori and I had our two kids and the dog along. Nothing like a little off-grid living, a road trip and a hike with kids...especially in a place were we're surrounded by remote wilderness.
We passed Manic 5, a huge power dam and then headed up a steep hill with several switchbacks as we pushed deep into Northern Québec through a long section of gravel highway. The road was very winding and felt sketchy in the earlier stretches where trucks were more prevalent. We entered the Uapishka (Groulx) Mountains and the scenery was quite beautiful as we drover adjacent to Lac Manicouagan and stopped at a pull over to take in a beautiful, mountain-shrouded view of the crater lake.
Soon, we reached Station Uapishka, an outpost run by the indigenous Pessamit Innu Council. There are backpacking trails in the area and they offer, camping and rooms, while in season, cultural experiences and paddling trips are available. We drove our truck and trailer right up onto the beach to camp in what was our favourite spot yet! We had a nice bonfire, a good meal and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. The next morning it was drizzling so we opened the awning on the trailer for some protection and ate breakfast before pulling out and continuing north to the Labrador border.

Favorite part!? Every second that you are kind enough to share with us! This episode was extra special only because "That big circle place" as I've always called it lol, has been on my bucket list for some time now. I still hope to get there one day. I can not thank you enough for sharing all the breath taking views and fueling my desire to get out there. Much love to you, Tori, Wesley, Hudson & North 🥰

really loved all of it...but now I am thinking I need to see that region where you were today. I got to know more about how that circle was formed, but more importantly I just want to see that part of North America with my own eyes... Canada needs to subsidize your adventures and promote your videos. I've been to Canada a few times but now I really want to plan some longer adventures. Thank you to you, Tori and the boys for sharing you amazing family trip! Honestly I think the only thing you could add to these trips is a few sections with some great folk music or the like...otherwise the quality is up there with the best produced travel docs. Well done & thanks again!

Hi Jim and Tori, This series is amazing! That round lake is very interesting. The boys are so cute and getting so big. Thanks for sharing. So cute seeing Hudson wanting to be with Wesley in his seat by the fire when Jim was talking to us. Hudson is a sweetheart and will be Wesley buddy forever, that one moment made that clear. ❤️

The round lake is an impact crater from a meteor: "Manicouagan Crater, located in Canadian province of Québec, is one of the Earth’s oldest and the most visible impact craters. Manicouagan Crater was formed by an asteroid strike over 214 million years ago. Like a pebble creating ripples when dropped into water, the crater has concentric rings formed by shock waves transmitted by the impact."

It’s also amazing the cooking skills you both have in the great outdoors. The boys and North are super good and fun to watch. The little discussion around 14:10 about how long it takes to drive "4 hours" with two kids (and a dog )really hit home. We traveled from Ottawa to Moncton and back this summer and there were a lot of emotions in the car after a while. Pit stops were not bad, but getting back to driving things were not very much fun... We had thought that we could do a marathon "8 hour" drive one day. Ended up splitting that up into two 4 hour drives instead and luckily we were able to change our reservations at the campgrounds. One day in the future I will be making this drive to visit family in Labrador. I appreciate you documenting your trip.

Nice day of travelling. Northern Quebec is beautiful. I was happy to see several comments about the lakes origin as a meteorite impact crater. One commenter said the impact occurred 1 Million years ago which is off by over 200 million years. It occurred in the Triassic and has persisted to modern times. The boys and dog seem to be pretty good travelers unless you are editing out the trying parts.

When you spoke about getting trapped between 18 Wheelers, it reminded me of the time we went to the beach in Southern Brasil . We had to travel 200mi to get there, at By a route they call The Wall ! It is a 1 lane rd across the mountains . The Pass was full of 18 Wheelers, and we were right in the middle of 20 of them We had to stop at the top of the mountain because a Cop could not check trucks, because he was suffocating from carbon monoxide ! We waited 20 min. Sitting in 40c heat with the windows rolled up until the Cop felt well enough to let us go ! There was a stone wall on the driver's side and a 450 ft drop on the passenger side ! and 10 18 Wheelers in front of us spitting diesel. We made it to the beach by 4pm . I was sipping beer and eating shrimp by 5pm , and watching Brasillian chicks Strutting on the beach ! It was 1 heck of a trip ! 😜 Mike

Great shore fishing for Pike, Walleye, Bass and Speckled Trout. If you have not been there, take your family and canoe on the Buddcar and start the adventure at the Flume (just north of Sheehan. When I was living in Baie-Comeau, the road was paved from Baie-Comeau to Manic 5, then dirt road, but a lot less curves. Then pavement on the Labrador side. When you where seing a big log truck coming, we had to stop as far has possible on the side of the road, and get your head and upper body as low as we could. Sometimes, there could be a log sticking out of the truck load and it could rip of the cab of the pickup truck and our head’s… Well, back in the « old days », now I don’t know, but do it anyway, lol.

My favorite parts, #1 the beautiful fall colors. #2 the scenery. #3 Hudson saying Hi. #4 when I looked over your shoulder & seen North lean his head over on Hudson. #5 the campsite by the lake with the spectacular sunset. #6 seeing you, Tori, Wesley, Hudson, & North. Well, O really enjoyed the whole video, with the aerial views. The teepee was neat. 1st time to see a dam that huge. Wow. Looking forward part 4.

Thanks a lot! Ya, basically the reason the road is there is because of that dam and the when they found huge iron oar deposits further north thst they connected back to sept ills on the st Lawrence, they connected it from the dam to the mines but didn’t start on the Trans Labrador proper for some time.

I agree 100% that opening up remote areas by major road works or other forms of access can be detrimental to the protection of these environmental areas. We have seen this first hand many times in the past 50 years of camping in Canada. Did you know that Lac Manicouagan was created 214 million years ago, in the Late Triassic, by the impact of a meteorite 5 km in diameter?

Wow massive! I did know it was a metope impact site. If you google lake Manicouagan before the dam, you can see a topo of what it used to look like. Basically to narrower, semi circle lake like sections of river that meet at the south. The dam widened them substantially Made them join at the top

Thank you, I grew up in one of the towns a bit West of Blanc Sablon (born on Northern Peninsula). This series is making me homesick and it will be worse once you get back to the Labrador coast. Safe travels

That lake is amazing, and geographically very interesting! I have been following your journey on Google Earth and checking out all of the photos and landmarks on there. Beautiful area. I’m guessing the logging trucks are busy shipping lumber that will end up in Home Depot’s here in the states as much of our lumber comes from Canada these days. Thanks for taking us along with you 😊. Btw my favorite part was just watching all the scenery!
