I'd argue that if you were playing lantern control or similar you'd just sacc something with 0 power and have both players enter topdeck mode. Maybe change to toughness instead so you need it to be at least 1?

Another option could be a blanket effect, all Pirates are Skeletons in addition to their other types. That way the ship can still get big but you don't need to overcrew it with your entire board. Also since it's a ghost ship you could just make it a Legendary Artifact Creature - Vehicle, and remove the crew cost all together, but maybe give it an attack/block clause dependent on your number of Skeletons?

Ferris wheel feels mechanically Rakdos to me. Maybe if they changed the name and art to depict one of those knife throwing stunts where one person throws knives at another spinning on a wheel, it would be a slam dunk. 4 mana though, too much. Maybe as an instant, but I think reducing the cost to 3 or even 2 because of the other cost would be good.

I feel like it would also help if the opponents chose whether to sacrifice a creature/which creature to sacrifice too- that way Ferris Wheel's caster gets to react and make the most optimal choice instead of hoping their opponents make a mistake.

Why is it even green? Really should just have been red and blue or mono blue. Beyond that, since you guess the mana cost first, the opponent can always just call out the same number and then... something undefined happens. I'd reword it like this: "Exile the top card of your library face down. You and each opponent guess the converted mana cost of that card. Flip that card over. The player that was closest without going over may cast that card without paying its mana cost or, if it is a land, play it anytime they could play a land. If more than one player's guess is the closest, you may choose who among them may cast or play that card. Shuffle 'The Price is Right' into your library." Avoids the problem with you drawing the card before the guess is made, and also gives you an advantage so that your opponents can't just consistently shut down the card by calling out the same number as you. Also made it so all opponents can participate because why not?

It's not missed... it's just senseless, you are telling me I have 18 creatures (..?) and I decided to tap all of them to crew this instead of just attacking? The only time it makes any sense is if most of them have pacifism on them and even then I'd rather tap only the pacified ones OR if most of them have 0 power (while still managing the crew 6(!) effect) I mean why not just have it the same but cost UBR have crew 1, have it say 'each creature crewing blabla is a skeleton in addition to its other types' and be a 0/3 with 'whenever a creature crews blabla, blabla gains +x/+x until end of turn where X is that creature's power, create a treasure token' Even then it would be far from broken but you don't need specific types, the mana cost is much more managable and you are rewarded with a treasure generator.

There are also might be instances where you made a lot of pirates in a turn but can not attack with all of them because of summoning sickness. Crewing for lethal in those cases is also a viable option.

One thing about the Cathar o War: it should be worded to protect against the LTB trigger resolving before the ETB trigger. I don’t know the best templating for this, but here is my take: “When [CARDNAME] enters the battlefield, exile another target creature until [CARDNAME] leaves the battlefield. The price is right card is too good, because you can't loose when playing it. It says to draw the card, and place it face down. This means you can see the card. It should say something like "exile the top card of your library face down".

Intended exact wording would be “Exile The Price Is Right from your hand: Shuffle your deck and exile the top card face down onto the battlefield. Name a converted mana cost, then target opponent names a different converted mana cost. Reveal the face down card. The player who guessed the closest mana cost without exceeding the cards cost, may play that card without paying it’s converted mana cost. (Lands cost 0) After That Card resolves, shuffle The Price Is Right into your library.

Firemind's Failure would be cool if you could use the draw ability only once per turn and only during your turn. Or if it didn't have the draw ability at all actually, as it already gives you an extra card and potentially a lot of extra cards if you hit a lucky streak of instants and sorceries on top. Even if you hit a land or something else on top, you can easily shuffle your library with a fetch land or something else, or just draw through the dead cards on top of your library or scry them away with Opt or other cantrips etc.

Made cards to support a few themes I liked; Spectacle support with a mechanic called Curtain Call that you use if you dealt 6 or more damage to a player that turn, Explore matters commander, and cards based on Dante's Inferno, Knights of the Round Table, Alice in Wonderland, and Shadow of the Colossus

Well, I can definitely understand the concerns. Ferris Wheel was designed with casual commander in mind and I wanted it to be more of a fun political piece than other wheel effects. As to why it was blue, that makes a little more sense in the context of the set. Each color represents a different part of the carnival/circus with the "bigtoppers" representing blue. Thanks for the feedback though, It definitely gave me some ideas for adjusting it!

In general when designing cards for a set the flavor of a faction/archetype should inform their mechanics, and that should inform their colors, you should never be in a position where you're justifying putting an effect in a color because it fits in with the set archetype of that color. If the archetype should have that effect, it should also have that color, and if it shouldn't have that color, it shouldn't have the effect. Not that you shouldn't ever bend the color pie but "this archetype should flavorfully have this card" is just not a good reason to do so. For ferris wheel in particular, I think the main problem is it's hybrid cost, when you're designing a card with only hybrid mana you're designing two mono-color cards in those colors, that just happen to take up one card slot in the set. A mono blue deck being able to cast a card that says "[An opponent] (may) sacrifice a creature" is a color pie break, and a mono black wheel effect is a color pie break. It doesn't matter that it's hybrid, because you can still cast it in a mono color deck. If you say "We're designing solely for commander, so because of color identity it does matter" then first of all, just make it 2 color, if it doesn't effect deck construction the effect on gameplay is minimal for decks < 4 color. That aside, at least be aware that wizards disagrees with you, as they don't design hybrid cost cards in commander products any differently then they do in standard/modern legal products, and also that your designs are going to break if wizards ever changes how hybrid costs affect color identity (which is a change many people want, and could very well happen in the future.) EDIT: If I were personally designing the card I would make it red or red black, because while wheel effects exist in blue, all of the "wheel"s they're named after are in red, and it would personally bug me to break that trend. But there's no reason the effect wouldn't fit in UB, it just doesn't fit in U/B.

I thought it would be interesting for the pirate skeleton ship... anyone who crews the ship becomes a skeleton in addition to their other types, forever. So as the crew joins they just all turn into skeletons which converts your whole board into buffs for the ship until you swarm with skelly power. Then I think you could add a line that you can sacrifice a creature crewing the ship to regenerate the ship. Give it the whole "cursed ship sailing eternally" vibe.

I want to see more content like this! The Hangman's Caress: I love the flavor so much! I don't know pirate tribal at all, but I was actually thinking it might be a little too powerful. Trample that you can rather easily pump up? It is commander damage too. I know the haste is because of ghost ships coming out of nowhere, but I think that should be traded out, it's a little too expensive for haste to be cool. Or maybe it's just too expensive overall? The Price is Right: Language needs fixing, but I like it. Will trigger things watching for draws, make it exile face down. Instead of target opponent, use "Starting with you, each player guesses [...]. A player may not choose a number already chosen." It will be more fun with more players! Currently allows you to "cheat" (Scry first). Could be allowed, but might be better flavor to lead with a shuffle. Remove the land text, it is 0 mana value and doesn't add much flavor. If it had some benefit to the owner it could be a serious card. Maybe "If you guess correctly, return The Price is Right to your hand. Otherwise shuffle The Price is Right [...]"

It's far too expensive - at best if you jump through all the hoops you get a haste trample 3/3 with "... gets +1/+1 for each creature you control" - which is not that bad but there are not that many good, cheap pirates or skeletons. Your ship is also doubly weak to removal - both artifact and creature based. Most of the time if you have enough pirates and skeletons out to make it strong, you win the game with your board anyway.

Bro I was using the urza AI thing and I got a freaking wild one. It's a RWG and 2B Legendary Creature - Gnome Lord that allows you to play cards from exile with any color mana. It also causes a card to be exiled from the top of your library whenever one of your creatures dies and you can play that card without paying its mana cost. It also has pay 2GWB, sacrifice a creature, create 2 green 1/1 gnomes, and pay 2RWB to exile target card from your graveyard. It's the most text I've seen on a random card and is broken af if you have enough mana or other combo pieces to sac creatures cheaper

The cathar is printed, kinda, is the demon slayer from innistrad. In the sense that the text is splitted, so if the creature leaves the battelfield while the first trigger is in the stack then the second trigger goes on top and the objective remain exilied.

Quirion Stampeder feels like Glimpse of Nature but also is a kobold lord and also draws you 2 cards at a time. You could play this turn 1 and draw your whole deck in legacy and would only need a concordant crossroads or the like to finish the game

What about ferrets wheel? WUUGG Starting with you, each player takes a turn either exiling a card in their hand, exiling a permanent they control, or refusing to no longer exile cards, until all players have refused. Then each player who exiled a card in play puts X 2/2 Ferret tokens onto the battlefield. Each player who exiled a card from their hand draws X cards. X is the total number of cards exiled this way. You gain X life.

my version of quirion stampeder's idea (although it isn't much of a stampeder anymore lol): 1GG ward--tap an untapped creature you control when a creature other than ~ is tapped, it loses all abilities until end of turn creatures you control without abilities have +X/+0, where X is equal to their cmc 1/4 opponents turn off their creatures when attacking/tapping to the ward effect. you can run creatures with downside and get to turn off the downside when attacking. i believe the timing makes it so that an attacking creature still triggers any "when ~ attacks..." effects before losing abilities though. and a bonus to your creatures based on cmc means 0 cost spam isn't ridiculous, lol

Especially because it also would care about Vanilla Creature Cards. A cool idea for the skeleton tribal vehicle card would be to allow you to pseudo crew it w creatures in your graveyard.. something like “crew 6, you may reduce the crew cost by X where X is the total power of skeletons in your graveyard” and then pay it off by having stats connected to the number of different skeletons in the yard. Lastly an attack trigger that returns a skeleton from the yard to the battlefield. Sorta reminds me of ghalta

On the topic of playing with black lotus for 10 life less, I offer this ;) Lotus Plantation {0} Artifact -- Fortification Fortified land gains “T, Pay 6 life: Add 3 mana of any color” and loses all other abilities. Whenever fortified land becomes untapped, it deals 4 damage to you. Whenever Lotus Plantation becomes unattached from a permanent, sacrifice that permanent. Fortify-Discard 4 cards

Thanks! I often find that a second pair of eyes helps spot oversights like the memnite issue. (Perhaps make it a once per turn, or pay Mana to draw the cards?) As for vanilla-matters, it's a hard theme to design to, as the payoffs need to be strong enough to offset playing vanilla creatures, but not broken.

If I were making Quirion Stampeder, I might have gone for something like X, T: reveal cards from top of library until you reveal a creature with mana cost X and no abilities, put it onto the battlefield, and put the rest on the bottom of your library.

Since the name is also a callback to "Lead the Stampede" I also like the idea of if being what you said, a lord that also has a mana sink that cares about vanilla creatures that are non tokens. 10:57 I see how this could be a card in a set in ravnica, even though the sack effect makes it's seem rakdos I think it could still stay black/blue and have the flavour of it be dimir using rakdos grounds to gather info. Could rename it fatal wheel to go with the sacrifice bit? Could change the cost to 1 generic, a red/blue hybrid and a black so it technically would be either guildes colors depending on what is spent while becoming grixias colors in terms of commander play so it would fit in stuff like nekusar. Could even make it orzov colors instead and rename it "wheel of faith" with some flavour text about followers praying to be gifted insight only to become gifted as a sacrifice for orzov's own gain due to their lack of insight of orzov's willingness to exploit. Even as a pure black card it fits. Also maybe another way to design the card effect since I think the whole concept is neat: Each player may sacrifice a creature if they do they discard their hand and draw cards equal to the sacrificed creatures power(as well as draws equal to the lowest power of a creature sacrificed this way). The stuff in () I am not sure about. I didn't make the card or anything, I am just thinking about the idea it presented while watching.

My biggest worry with "The Price is Right" is the player "draws" the card. They don't exile it face down. That means they get to see it before making their bid. At least, I think it does; I could be completely wrong there.

My take for the pirate ship: Crew 6 During your second main phase, if [cardname] attacked alone, untap all pirates you control, you get an additional attack phase. Pirates you control gain undying.

That's a very cool design. I'd say either make it an attack trigger (so it can't just get lethally blocked or Pathed or whatever), or allow other creatures to attack alongside it(because, let's face it, crewing the thing will take up a lot of bodies in the first place), or both.

You're definetly right about the attack trigger. I would keep that it has to attack alone, but change the stats to a 2/6 with deathtouch. Then if you block, you have to sacrifice two big creatures and still face the incomming undead pirates. If you don't block, you only take two damage, but the ship sticks around. Otherwise you'd just always block, not very interesting.

Every single one of those card has some mistakes on it. :D At least Quirion Stampeder and Devouring Mass got it somewhat right. Really like the format but would love to see some more pro designs next time!

For the "Altar of False God" let it say "Sacrified an Artifact and a Creature: Altar of the False God gains Indestructible until end of turn." and it should be fine for zero mana. ;D

I think Ferris Wheel would be fixed if it was Rakdos and had you choose the creatures to sacrifice in secret, then reveal simultaneously.

Ferris wheel would work better as rakdos. Keep the both players sacrifice mechanic, drop the hand discard, and replace the draw effect with: “both players exile x cards where x is the sum converted mana cost of sacrificed creatures. Players can play these cards until the casters next untap step.”

I agree that the Hangman’s Caress has a lot of words that aren’t super necessary, but something I think you guys are missing is Commander Damage in the Commander format. Pumping specifically your commander this way is valuable, because a player that takes 21+ damage from another commander loses the game. You can crew more than just 3, so if you can stack up skeletons and crew the ship massively, you can put a serious clock down.

The Devouring Mass should exile your graveyard when it comes into play, getting a +1/+1 counter for each card exiled. Then it has the effect to create a copy of itself.

We could fix that last card, potentially. "Target player shuffles their library, then exiles the top card of their library face down. Starting with you and going in turn order, each player guesses the converted mana cost of the exiled card. Once all players have guessed, reveal the exiled card. The player who guessed the closest number to the converted mana cost of that card may play that card without paying its mana cost for as long as it remains exiled. If multiple players guessed the same number, they each create a copy of that card and may play it without paying its mana cost. If the exiled card has a converted mana cost of 0 or does not have a mana cost, it goes into its owner's hand. Then, shuffle [Card Name] into its owner's library." Probably still needs work though.

Maybe for a ghost pirate ship it could have crew 20, but you may exile creatures from your graveyard to crew the ship, when the ship attacks, return 1 creature exiled with it to the battlefield tapped and attacking except it is a legendary skeleton pirate. Maybe also have it worded so only 1 thing can be kept alive by the ship at a time, im not sure how it would have to be worded for that, but kind of like you assemble the crew for your ship but you can only have 1 captain of the vessel and make him go down with the ship(exile the captain when the ship leaves the battlefield)

Thanks for rating my card! It was really cool to hear your thoughts on it. Here's my reasoning behind the choices made: Why Mono-G? Both BG mythic slots were full, and the card needs to be mythic for limited reasons. Both UG (Delve) and BG (Imprint) are graveyard-centric archetypes that consume your graveyard and I wanted the card to be playable in either deck as a payoff for not just eating your graveyard as fast as possible. As for the pack rat issue: It's at mythic for a reason. Secondly, as you copy it, the copies get smaller. Thirdly, there's heaps of incidental graveyard hate in the limited format. (1 white common, 2 black commons and 2 green commons, plus several uncommons.) It's still really strong, but not unbeatable without a board wipe. As for the name, Fair enough. I hadn't thought about it that way. I just slapped a generic name on it and called it a day.

After recording I felt like I was a bit too harsh on that card and a bit too easy on the altar. Either way, you can tell you put thought into the card without overdoing it (the most common mistake imo)

@@jaminkauf6242 Thanks! Honestly, I found it kinda funny how split you were on the card. If I can get one of you to say the card is broken, while the other thinks it's too weak, then that's a success in my book. I also realized that there's heaps of context behind the card that you wouldn't know from just looking at it. Also I've definitely made several power level mistakes before. At one point it didn't have a Mana cost to split it. That took all of 30 seconds of playtesting to realize how broken it was. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to seeing another one of these, as I've got a few more cards I'm really proud of.

With the hangman’s caress is says GAINS not GETS which would mean it perpetually gets that +1/+1 so that is a pretty big reward (this is also true with the things crewing it becoming skeletons)

I wasn't the person who submitted the price is right card, but I tried my hand at fixing it: The Price is Right, 1GU, Sorcery Each player shuffles their library and exiles the top card of their library face down. Each player guesses the total mana value of those cards, and can not guess the same number. Reveal those cards. The player who guesses the closest without going over the total mana value of those cards may cast those cards this turn without paying their mana costs, and may cast them as though they had flash. If no player is under the total mana value, the cards remain exiled. Shuffle The Price is Right into your library. Unfortunately, still very wordy.

Let me try my hand at this... I run an oloro life gain deck and I always wanted a green white black variant that also just sits in his commander chair. But instead of just giving 2 life per turn, how about a twist! Whenever a non-creature, non-land permanent enters the battle field, gain 1 life. This effect may only happen once per turn. While he is on the battlefield, you may pay 2 when you gain life. If you do, create a 0/2 defender warrior-cleric token.

Hangman's caress could've been really good if pirates that crew it can still attack that turn along with the suggested undying, which makes it even more wordy, but gives it the touch more power it would need to be really fun as a tribal commander

Something else that could make it better/more flavorful is like "When it deals combat damage to a player, make a treasure for each skeleton crewing it" or something along those lines. Could help justify the Crew 6 as well.

For the Fixed black lotus I think it was understood exactly in inverse to its intention I think the wording that was intended was "The Fixed Black Lotus enters the battlefield Tapped unless you control 5 or more artifacts" The intent was to make it not be such a fast mana but that is still turn 2 with 3 extra mana at the cost of 5 life so still extremely powerful" As for the Firemind's Failure if they changed the final effect to something like 3 generic destroy firemind's failure anyone cant active this effect and as long as this effect is on the stack no player can cast spells or activate abilities that are not mana abilities. Effectively give the opponent the ability to use a split second destruction on it so there is risk to using it. Alternatively they could keep its exile top 4 cards ability but make it a once per turn thing.

Hangedman's Caress Crew 6 Skeletons cannot crew this vehicle. Whenever a Pirate crews this vehicle, untap it. It becomes a Skeleton in addition to it's other types until end of turn. CARDNAME gets+2/+0 for each skeleton you control.

For price is right, instead of the shuffling and top card, each player chooses a different number, and then you flip over cards on the top of the library until you get a nonland card, the rest works as normal, and you exile all land cards revealed this way and the nonland card if both players went over. Then if you want to make it really busted, make it an enchantment that both players either can or must trigger on their upkeep

One thing you might have missed about Firemind's Failure: Donate/Harmless Offering. You can play both while FF is out... and once you give that to your opponent, that's a strong lock piece. If you're not in both red and blue, you can't get rid of this. And if your win condition isn't land-based or spellslinging, you don't have a win condition anymore. Not every deck has an answer to enchantments, especially when locked into instants and sorceries only.

Two things wrong about the "Price is Right". First is that it says 'draw a card', meaning you'd be able to look at the card? Really it should says "Exile the top card of your library face down..." (Correct me if I'm wrong) Second thing that's wrong is if this is just a regular magic card and not part of an un-set, you could just brainstorm in response to put whatever card you want on top and have perfect knowledge of what that card is making it completely one-sided and broken.

Cathar O'war is good except it falls into the same issue as Oblivion ring where since it's two separate abilities instead of one ability (like Brutal Cathar) using instant speed removal on Cathar O War before the first ability resolves permanently exiles the card, which is something Wizards doesn't do anymore.

I think if it had some additional effects other than pump itself. For example, it deals X damage to a creature or Planeswalker equal to skeletons too, or maybe when it deals DMG to a player they discard X cards (where is # of skeletons). It gets really wordy that way, but there's probably an elegant way to do that for someone cleverer than I.

Not directly but there are plenty of vehicles with alternate crew costs like Heart of Kiran so it would just be worded to work, concept is fine.
