I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I am a long-time koi-koi player, these guys aren't half bad for just learning the game. I think the only things they didn't pick up on were prioritizing the high value sets (like the ones that get you 5+ points) that aren't related to Light cards, and the fact that the points aren't evenly distributed within the months, and that's pretty easily used for high point combos.

When Danny got the four cards at 7:00 it's because they were all the same month. A hand is called a Yaku, and this yaku is called Tsuki Fuda, which means "month cards". In this circumstance, three were already on the field and when Dan drew, he drew the last 4th card of the month. In some cases it's an instant win worth 4 points, but it looks like the switch version doesn't count that. I actually just recently bought Clubhouse Games and fell in love with Hanafuda so much I bought a real set of cards. And yes, they are as "slappy" sounding as you think.
@UmbrotheUmbreon
@UmbrotheUmbreon 2 жыл бұрын
So I know this is really late, but that is an actual thing in the Switch version, you just have to have the cards in your opening hand to get the instant win. I stumbled across it randomly while playing against a CPU and was very confused. Otherwise, flipping/playing the fourth month card just takes all the other month cards to your side.
@megamajig
@megamajig 4 жыл бұрын
For anyone confused, there are 12 Suits of 4 cards each, typically you can tell what cards are part of the same suit by the flower or plant depicted on the card. . In order to "capture" a card from the center and add it to your score pile, you have to match a card of the same suit with a card in the center to add it to your "score pile" . Cards in your score pile determine if you make a winning hand or "yaku" the moment you have any winning hand you can either end the round and take the score you got or "koi-koi" which allows you to attempt to continue for more points BUT if your opponent completes a hand after you koi-koi they get double points for sweeping it out from under you (risk - reward) . The hardest part of the game is learning all the different Yaku you can make in the game. The rest is memorizing the deck and thinking to yourself "what can my opponent possibly make with whats on the board and what i KNOW they cant get with the cards I'm holding" and making your decisions and risk based on that. . As a note to the grumps, "I am by no means a hanafuda expert, but i love this game and have been playing it for years and you guys are picking up the strategy just fine :D"

I've found that the rules vary depending on which game I'm playing (not koi-koi/Hana-awase/Go-Stop, I mean which koi-koi title - been around a while, I have a few, plus I build Raspberry Pi boxes occasionally). Doubling isn't always a thing in my experience. There's one game on Android that throws in 'glitches', and I've wound up with a 60-point round on the back of that. Hanafuda: Koi-Koi of Infinity, it's called. On top of that, some games count up your total over a set number of rounds, while others have tug-of-war scoring, taking points from your opponent’s pool. That’s how Star Platinum plays. This is also the first time I've seen the Akatan (Red Written Prayer Slip), Aotan (Blue Prayer Slip) and Inoshikacho (Boar-Deer-Butterfly) tricks be inflatable, gaining another point for each extra card of their type. On the generic 'get five of anything' Tan and Tane tricks, sure, but not the ones that are 'get three specifics'.

Average Hanafuda Koi-Koi player here: - If there are 3 cards of the same month on the table, and you have the last one, you get all of them! (similiar to what happened to Dan) - Ideally you should try to discard cards that: you can match with another that you have on hand, but also watch out for what your opponent has or cards that were played already! (each month has 4 cards, so if 2 are already out, and the other 2 are on your hand, you can safely put that on the table, knowing that only you can match that! - If you see that your opponent is, for example, getting all blue poetry, try to block that by capturing one, so he can't get the whole set - Koi-Koi usually is best when you can complete a set on the next hand. (adding to a current set can also be done! eg: Chaff(10) and you add a new Chaff card, that's considered a win - Pay attention on what your opponent have, sometimes you can't complete a set no matter what! (eg: someone has 2 Light cards and Willow Light Card, and the other one has 2 Light Cards!) - To remember which one matches with which, just check if the "flowers" match on the cards (kinda "Ignore" the other elements) They are very distinctive! - Koi-Koi only double points for your opponent! For you it's just an opportunity to score more! - Anyone who makes 7 or more points gets double the points! (So if you make 8 points on a round, you get 16 points actually!) - Cherry Blossoming Viewing, Moon Viewing and Boar-Deer-Butterflys are "easy" combinations to do, worth a lot of points! So try blocking your opponent if they snatch one! Well, that's it from me!

10:15 Deer-Boar-Butterfly combo, you may be interested to know, is known as *Ino-Shika-Chou*. Nintendo didn't just get it's start making playing cards- they sold almost exclusively the yakuza! They produced the cards for the gambling rings. Boy did the have a time rebranding from being partners with the yakuza to selling kids toys! That hard satisfying /slap/ sound is due to the fact these cards are usually either made of hard plastic or thick cardboard. The deck is actually a reverse of our card deck: instead of four suits of thirteen ranks, picture it as thirteen ranks of four suits. The way to score is to match certain groups together, and yes, they all have names. Just like real cards, you don't just play this one game with them. Imagine a Japanese equivalent of the Hoyle's book of rules! Even solitaire games. I've been a huge fan of these cards for years, but information on how to play the game was always scarce. While the game existed online for single player, any instructions were provided they were in Japanese. The previous Clubhouse Games are an excellent collection and it was a shame they didn't get the notariety they deserved. When I saw that a sequel was coming the Switch I about lost my mind, and to see Hanafuda and Shoji included, I lost all my shits. I really hope they play more Hanafuda. If anyone (Arin) wants/needs to know more about Hanafuda rules let me know and I'll see if the site I used still exists.

Okay, I got a deck of my own and did some research. Here's how the game works: - each card has a plant on it that represents a month of the year, 4 cards to each month. There's also the sake-cup card which is wild. What you're trying to do is match the cards in your hand to the cards in the middle by their months in order to form specific combos. - each player has 8 cards, there are 8 cards in the middle, and the rest are in a stack (called the mountain) on the side. - after determining who goes first, the player has to match their cards to the cards in the middle by their month. If they get a match, both cards are put to the side in a points pile. If there's no match they put a card down in the middle. They then do the same with whatever card is on top of the mountain. Then it's the opponents turn. - getting specific combos of cards in your points pile ends the round and scores the player points depending on the combo. Once a combo is made the player can choose to end it there and stick with the points they have, or they can call Koi Koi, which means to continue and try to earn more points (and as you see here, any points earned after Koi Koi is called get doubled) . However this is a risk, because if their opponent gets a combo before them after Koi Koi has been called, the opponent gets the double points.

I've played this game before. It's koi koi, one of the many games you can play with hanafuda cards. It's basically poker, but you get to pick cards from the pile in the middle. Each combination has different values, first one to take points each round gets to keep them, otherwise you keep playing until someone takes points or the cards run out. A full game is twelve rounds, one for each month or suit. Notice if you can't see the patterns in which cards constitute a combination. The main ones are for each season, for having banners, for having sets of "leftover cards", then there are more niche combinations like "all the banners with writing" or "sakura viewing party" or "4 seasons". It's a really pretty, complex, interesting and dynamic game.

I've been playing Koi Koi for over 5 years, and that round at 16 minutes is one of the best hands I've ever seen. The exact placement of cards and draws has to be so exact to get anything over 40 points. Absolutely mind blowing. I get a hand like that maybe once every 6 months of playing weekly. So much fun watching you guys play this. It's the kind of game that just never gets old for some reason. Would love to see you guys play this more!!

@@sasir2013 I think the mechanic of using captured pieces will be a huge game changer here, and I think Arin will take to it faster than Dan. I don't know what assists the game provides for new players but my thought is that Dan will have trouble visualizing the danger in Arin's captured pieces due to them appearing visually similar (in Hanafuda Arin remarked on the visual patterns that cards shared and Dan remarked on difficulties distinguishing cards) What I imagine happening is Arin quickly embracing using captured pieces, putting a lot of pressure on Dan, and only if Dan can withstand that pressure, therefore gaining an advantage in captures, that he can turn the tables. TLDR I believe the differences from chess will benefit Arin (a more novice chess player) and create a challenge for Dan (a more experienced chess player).
