10 times regional, 4 times national Dots and Boxes champion here. You guys absolutely smashed it. Perhaps unknowingly, you were using some advanced techniques from the ancient Dots and Boxes books (although that is an iffy territory, since half of the books have yet to be translated from Aramaic). In the third game, Dan employed a technique common to the French champions called "Spirale Bourguignon," which, if misused, can open a portal to the 14th dimension (only if you play the game on paper, obviously). In "dots and boxes", if you're in a short chain, such as where Dan was at 13:43, instead of going all the way to the end you can jump ahead to create a closed off rectangle of two boxes. That ends your turn and forces your opponent to give you the longer chain.

Connect Four and Dots and Boxes are very similar in that every permutation of the next move is fairly obvious. If you’re playing against someone as smart as you, the trick is in distracting them from noticing what you’re going for. And nobody is more distracting than Arin.

I doubt anyone will care, but it's important to note that in the second box and dots game, just because arin was handing you that upper right corner, it doesn't strictly mean that you had to take it. Arin goofed because he marked that box in such a way that Dan was not forced to start claiming boxes. Theoretically, Dan could just mark the box on the opposite side instead, forcing Arin to take that corner of boxes, and leaving Danny with a (relatively crushing) victory.

In Dots and Boxes, if you near the end of the game and you have to choose between giving up a 10 box area and a 4 box area, it's best to take 2 from the 4 box area and then draw a line creating a rectangle. This forces the opponent to take the rectangle and have to give you the 10 box area. At 13:47 he should have drawn a line at the top of that rectangle instead of through the middle.

Fun fact, there is a huge advantage to going first in connect 4, if the first player takes the center slot and successfully blocks all their opponents moves player 1 will always win

Used to play this game a lot in high school (shut up, we had fun). We stopped when the "strat" was discovered. It basically goes like this: In the advanced stage of the game, when your opponent gives you an area to fill in, fill most of it then instead of finishing the last two, draw the last one's third line instead. This way you force your opponent to take those two and give you another region. Rinse/repeat till you win.

Apparently Dots and Boxes is a solved game up to 4x5 (which explains why they give you 4x6) so the draw was most likely the most optimum game they played.
