Speaking as an “expert” (played since I was a tyke, best my grandpa 3 in a row to earn my own set at 10): Remember how you could choose a 3 or 5 pt game? All games start being worth one, but you can dare a double to up the stakes. Once one player doubles, the other player controls the doubling cube, so one player can’t go mad with it (looking at you Arin). Also, if you win before your opponent gets any off the board, that doubles your score (a “gammon”), and if you can somehow trap them so bad they’ve got one in your end zone, it’s worth 3x (a “backgammon”). Also, both times, your opening moves were all wrong :P any time the starting roll is 2 apart (like the 3/5 and 4/6 you guys rolled), you can safely make a fortification in your end zone, making it way harder for your opponent to re-enter if you hit them later, and gives you more safe spots to start moving your pieces close to home. Pretty much always a good idea to block as many spots in your end zone as possible.

haha funny, i didn't understand at the begging but then i learned only by watching them, basically they move the checkers the amount of spaces the dice says, they can combine the numbers and move one checker or use them separatedly and move 2 checkers, when they get double dices they get 4 dices, so 4 moves, or two big moves and so on, combining them, until you get them to the other side nice and packed. also i u have one lonely checker and your opponent gets a roll that lands them in that same space, they can kick out your checker and have it start all over again from the begining of the board. idk why im explainingthis tho, u didnt ask. i'm thinking it's more for me than it is for you, sorry!

Genuine answer: it's the term for when you win and your opponent 1) hasn't borne any of his pieces off the board and 2) has at least one of them "captured" on the bar in the middle of the board. Difficult to achieve, worth three points (multiplied by the doubling cube, of course).

@Zaftique4 жыл бұрын
It's mostly for tournament play. If you're playing for points, it's a way to up the ante, so to speak. When you take your turn, you can show the cube to the other player, and they choose to accept or decline. If they accept, then they hang on to the cube to show the next highest number whenever it's their turn as a counter bet. If they decline the cube, then the game ends and the decliner takes 1 point (or whatever the number on the last accepted cube was).

The double die matters more if you're playing rounds of multiple games where the winner is decided by who has the most points after x games or who gets x points first. If you think you have a good chance of winning you can propose a double, if the opponent is still optimistic on their chances, they'll take it, making the amount of points won from the game increase, but if the opponent believes that they will lose, its better to forfeit and only let you get 1 point for the victory (or however many points the game is worth if the double die has already been used). After the game has been doubled once, which can be proposed by anyone, only the person who did not propose the first double can propose the next double (after the second double, only the first player to propose it can propose the 3rd etc.). This adds a layer of strategy to the game if played in rounds instead of single games that can limit the effect luck can have on who wins since a better player will be able to predict if they will win or lose earlier in the match, allowing them to potentially capitalize on a close game to earn more points, quickly end a match that they have a better chance at winning (but its not such a blowout that their opponent wont bear off at all), or cut their loses at an obvious loss.

@jonathancaballeros34084 жыл бұрын
3-1 is the best starting roll, as it locks up the 5 point. A 6-1 is 2nd best, as it locks up the bar (7) point.

@@TheNewSora92120 yes, but it's a better idea to bring a man out of the start out all the way to the 11 point. You're not sacrificing much if you do get hit.
@Archgeek04 жыл бұрын
I had almost completely forgotten how the game worked, but laying eyes on the end phase, I can tell you Dan definitely has the superior strategy. Since each die has equal chance of making any space bear off, the optimal strategy is to either bear a piece off a space with more than one present, or move a piece off a large stack to a smaller stack or an empty space, spreading out the pieces and increasing the utility of each potential roll. Dan clearly sees that, Arin blatantly does not.

I love backgammon, so this was both entertaining AND painful to watch. XD Arin and Dan both made a ton of blunders, and failed to grasp the scoring, but I'm glad that they're enjoying the game and sharing it with everyone here! Here's a quick explanation of how the game is scored, for any who are curious... --- • If your opponent has managed to bear off some of their checkers by the time you win, you score 1 point. This is a single game. • If your opponent has NOT borne off any of their checkers when you win, you score 2 points. This is called a "gammon." • If you win while your opponent still has some of their checkers trapped on the bar and/or in your home board (i.e., the quadrant from which you bear off), then you score 3 points. This is called a "backgammon." • If the doubling cube is in play, the above point values are multiplied by the number shown on the cube at the end of the game. --- A "three-point match" means that you have to win some combination of the above that adds up to three points total in order to achieve victory. For example, if you win a single game for the first round, then win by a gammon for the second, you've won the whole match (1+2=3)! Dan and Arin didn't get to figure this out because they went nuts with the doubling cube. :P If they hadn't doubled, then when Dan won the first game, they would have had a score of 1 - 0, and a second round would've begun in the same 3-point match; however, since they doubled and re-doubled up to 16, Dan got far more points than what was needed to win a 3-point match, so he took the whole enchilada. --- When you offer a double to your opponent to raise the stakes, they can either accept, thus doubling the current stakes, and then take control of the cube, or they can forfeit if they're in a bad position. If they forfeit, then they only lose by the non-double point value. This means that if Dan had passed on Arin's very first double, then Arin would've gotten 1 point and a new game would've begun in the same 3-point match. If, on the other hand, Dan still accepted that first double, and then proceeded to win without RE-doubling and giving the cube back to Arin, then Dan would have gotten 2 points for winning that first game (i.e., a single game win, x2). Then the match score would've been 2 - 0, and Arin would've had a chance for a comeback. --- The doubling cube, then, is both a strategic and psychological element. If you think you're in a good position to win the round, then you can offer a double to see if you can get a higher score out of it. On the other hand, you don't want to offer a double when you're TOO likely to win, because then your opponent will pass and you'll only get one point instead of a possible two. It's better to forfeit when you have little chance to win than it is to give your opponent a good shot at twice the points.

In what world is that a quick explanation!?
@StraightestDakregor3 жыл бұрын
Wait, so, if a player only needs 3 points to win, why does the doubling dice have multipliers that high?
@StephenCinAZ3 жыл бұрын
@@StraightestDakregor Matches can be of just about any length, and not just to three points. You can play just a single game for one point (in which case the doubling cube won't be used), or you can play to three points, seven points, twenty-one points, or more. It is exceedingly rare for the cube to be turned to anything higher than, say, 8 at most.

If you place atleast 2 checkers on all 6 spaces in the final quadrant, and then capture an enemy's checker they cannot play whatsoever and will not be able to bear off any checkers that round. This is because when you have a piece removed you have to get it back into play before doing anything else, and since dice rolls only go to 6, you prevent them from landing on any of those starting spaces so they are completely blocked and lose a turn. The usual strat is keeping a couple peices back so you can bully your opponent, filling the enemy's quadrant with atleast 2 pieces each, capturing an enemy checker, and then ass blasting them in the bearing off stage. This is one of the reasons you have 2 checkers at the starting point. So 2 checkers can stay safe and protect the base, while the other 13 can fill the 12 spots in the enemy base for total domination
