Today we react to "The Fermi Paradox - Where are all the Aliens?" from the amazing Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell. We'll ponder if we are alone in the universe, what could be the reason we haven't found any other life yet, and what the "great filters" that hold life back could be.
Please support Kurzgesagt and make sure to check out the original video at • The Fermi Paradox - Wh...

The chance that molecules could form a complex self-replicating system is statistically impossible, so I'd say the filter is behind us. And considering the results of human stupidity, I'd say it's ahead of us as well.

I love this, I completely agree there is likely more than one "great filter" and we're likely in-between them unfortunately. It's awesome because we made it this far, but sucks because we have at least one (likely more) to go.

7:24 simulations show that it’s likely that Jupiter redirected a large 7km asteroid into earths orbit, 65.6 million years ago!

Maybe there is some logic to my theory then! lol

Humanity is both the most uplifting and depressing thing we know of, which is probably why our species are so divided. If we can just put our differences aside, we'd be the ones in weird triangle ships visiting another planet that wonders if there's aliens.

Very true, we just need to get over that hump and get along for once! I'm really hopeful that we are headed in that direction.

The universe being big is just one side of the equation. We don't know if there is other life out there because we don't know how probable life is in the first place. Say there are 10 trillion habitable planets out there, but the odds of life forming on one is 1 out of 10 quadrillion. Suddenly life is very unlikely to exist anywhere else. The only factor we have to go on is that life emerged relatively early on earth after it became stable. But that's still a sample size of 1. To state as fact that there has to be other life out there because the universe is big, is illogical.

I think we should be looking at planets with silicon as well as carbon because silicon is just as good as carbon for life, we actually have ONE life form that is actually silicon based! The Diatom! Although it does still use carbon and water, it has a common ancestor since before it adapted to use silicon. So it’s not out of the question

I don't know much about silicon life, but I've heard that it should theoretically be possible. I think I have a video on the list about this very topic actually, might have to do that one sooner than later.

Epic message at the end of the video. Mankind is capable of anything. It just needs to stop short-term thinking and greed, at least among ourselves

If we are in a Simulation there would be no reason to simulate any other life that the simulators didn't want to be a part of it. And it's pretty damn likely we are in one so it kind changes the math.

I'm not sure how I feel about Simulation Theory, but I think we need to react to a good video on the topic really soon! It's quite interesting.

@@malkariss the elevator pitch is- could we make civilization simulations in the future? Easily, we’d only need to turn a gas giant into a Matryoshka brain to run a couple hundred the size of all humans on Earth, which future wise is very cheap and achievable. Would we want to? Yeah obviously. So if other universes have existed where those things were true- the vast vast majority of all worlds with sentient beings will be simulated ones.

The universe is big but there is still no real proof just a bunch of theories and speculations, so I still believe were the only life that exist in the universe
