The Hollar Homestead

The Hollar Homestead

Жыл бұрын

After sitting in out freezer for a month, we are dealing with the bones from our lamb processing, making bone broth and one of our favorites - scrapple. We’re also pruning and tieing up our tomatoes in the high tunnel with our trellis system.

We totally agree, having the rain is really nice for the garden beds except when there's red clay every where. Our side door goes directly to our mud room. It has a braided rag rug which is now 3 different shades of red clay color until I wash it (washed weekly). I'm so glad to have the mud room here, my guys bring red clay in on their bootsfeom working outside. What can I say, Oklahoma is known by it's red clay. Look at those tomato plants!!! Man, I can't wait for our tomatoes to look like yours. I'm craving homemade bread with fresh tomato, mayo sandwiches!!! Y'all enjoy the scrapple!

I do my backyard work after 9:00 and then I fall in the pool to cool off and then hose the chlorine off. Your sweet baby girl is getting so big. Her blond curls are so adorable. They will be early for me this year! I think potatoes will be ready in 2 weeks. Hi, I am from Cincinnati Ohio and grew up eating goetta. It is a German recipe and for many years only available in this area. Made with pork and steelhead oatmeal. Many people mistake it for scrapple but like you I think all areas of the country have different recipes like scrapple and gotta Depending on the nationality that settled in that area.

Ben, you bring up an excellent issue.. that actually goes WAY back to our colonial times. People now a days too often assume that our forefathers lived off the land and were TOTALLY self-sufficient ... which was rarely the case. That concept sets up such an impossible bar to achieve. One family to 'do it all' is simply not possible. No Man is an Island. No doubt what motivates many modern homesteaders is the QUALITY of their food. To have as much food as "CLEAN" as possible is a great accomplishment. Plus you have inspired so many of us to just DO what we can... I have a few raised beds.. but I finally STARTED my own Tomato plants WoW!.. and today we started doing that String Thing that you do. 🍅 I've now got trellises up for my Cucumbers 🥒 Brilliant 😊 Without people like your family to inspire, . I likely would not have bothered. So THANK YOU ALL.. You are a far greater blessing than you can imagine.

1) Sure wish we could get some of your rain here in Olympia! 2) I’m with you - use as much as possible to minimize waste! Right now, I’m processing dehydrated garlic scapes into powder. Music was done first, then Shatili, and now it is Rose de Lautrec. 3) Harvested Oregon Blue garlic yesterday (6/26/2023).. Today, the planter box is being replanted with Lillian’s Caseload peas. 4) Poor Buggie “It’s not working”. Think we’ve all experienced that type or frustration at one point or another! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 6/27/2023.

when we have BBQ turkey, duck, goose and chicken wings i call it 'wing it' i mix them together... for bread end crusts i soak them and then put them in the pie maker for the base and then make the lids from scratch. sometimes if i haveenough left over meat i will put it through the mince grinder and finely grind it up and then add some pork or beef drippin and then stuff it into sausage skins. for the poltry bones i also grind up and put into the animal feed along with egg shells... when its used for poltry feed. for the meat grinder i made my own perferated discs from 2mm up to 5mm holes depening on what im grinding

Heya, I remember making scrapple wen I was still living at my perants home. it is a really old dutch food that normally is made 1 - 2 weeks before X-mas. back in the old day's ( 100 - 500 years ) it was made from all the meat left overs/scraps and part's that normally goes to the pigs. we messuared the right thickness by putting the spoon in the middle of the pan and wen it would keep standing wen letting the spaan loose it's the right thickness. In my country (The Netherlands) we call it "balkenbrei" wen I translate it to english it's = bar knitting so I'm not 100% sure if I'm right
