We've had a very steep learning curve but we're finally starting to realise that perhaps sailing a catamaran really is so much easier than a monohull!
Our videos are free for everyone to watch, and always will be. However, we have an amazing community of Patrons who, for the cost of a cup of coffee a month, receive all sorts of benefits and perks. This support allows us to continue bringing our stories to you, so a HUGE thanks to our wonderful Patrons 😊 Click the link above to find out more.

Hey there! We're Nick and Terysa and we’ve become completely obsessed with the idea of sailing around the world and sharing our experiences and information through our sailing lifestyle videos with others.
We met travelling around India, and quickly agreed that rather than “settling down” and doing what most normal people do, we wanted to travel and have adventures! We moved onto our 38 foot monohull in 2014, sailed across the Atlantic twice, cruised the Caribbean, Bahamas and Europe, before buying a brand new 45 ft catamaran!
We hope you enjoy what we do. Please subscribe, like and share.

Nick, chuck a castle nut on the boom where the nylock hex nut came loose. Drill a hole through the bolt and use a split pin to secure it in place. You'll have peace of mind that it would never come loose with vibrations in future. Those nylock's aren't reliable with expansion heat and cold wise and tend to fibrate loose over time.

As envious as I am about your lifestyle and catamaran, by far the best thing the two of you have is the quality of your relationship together. Anyone of your viewers can buy a boat and sail away, but your ability to thoroughly enjoy each others company is priceless. We all can only hope to have that luxury.

I'm so happy you guys got some relaxing sailing and could enjoy yourselves. As a mechanic, I recommend getting a good multimeter. A quick test can tell you if the solenoid is good or if you may have a failed diode in the circuit. Also, keep spare solenoids, diodes, fuses, and electrical wire. Never know when you will need them. A really good wire strippers and crimper. NOTHING BETTER THAN A ICE COLD BREW to end a day.

WOW, the same thing happened to us with the goose neck boom nut. We were on passage in the Atlantic when we heard the nut fall and make a rattle noise. When you said you heard a noise and were investigating, we both said, that's what happened to us! So weird. Our boom actually came off,but fortunately we caught it in time and were able to put it all back together. It was very stressful to say the least. We enjoy watching your adventures. Sail on...⛵

For a while, checking the goosenck bolt was part of our pre-departure checklist. A new nylock nut did the trick, but I still check it before any longer passages. This is on a Lagoon 410. I had the gooseneck break in half too, but that's another story:(

wouldnt you then have to cut it off for servicing? second locking nut on the end of the bolt might be another way that still leaves the option to get it apart again without an angle grinder
@robm.4512
@robm.4512 7 ай бұрын
@@gavmurray7398 A single centre punched deformation of the thread tends to just get re-formed back into shape on undoing the nut and bolt. No angle grinder required, just a wrench, socket and ratchet drive… or a pair of wrenches if you’re in less of a hurry. It does mean that the nut’s thread will be trashed by the time it’s fully removed though, so it pays to keep a spare or two in the stores. An alternative, which I prefer for a gooseneck pivot, is to use a drop of threadlock on the assembly and cross drill the bolt outboard of the nut to allow the use of a split-pin, or preferably a split-ring, through the hole as a secondary security method.

Hearing Terysa saying "I'm a happy girl" at the helm with that burger in her hand is what I think everyone has been waiting for. There was a time there while the boat was under construction and in the weeks following where I'm sure a lot of us were wondering whether she'd lost the love. To hear and see how good things are now that the boat is in better shape and has been shook down thoroughly by you both warms the heart. Enjoy and have a fantastic sail. It's going to look amazing hauling RR2 onto a ship to Europe!

Nylock nuts work great. They were created to stop airplanes from falling apart in flight and they do the job. There should be a minimum of 3 or 4 turns of thread extending past the top of the nut. If you don't have this it won't work properly. I couldn't see in your video if your bolt is long enough. The idea is that the friction of the nylon inside the nut will slow down the unscrewing of the nut if it loosens giving you time to notice and tighten it. Without the nylon, vibration can unscrew a regular hex nut and make it fall off the end of the bolt in minutes/hours once it loosens. With the nylon, it takes days/weeks/months if the bolt is long enough. If you want more security, first screw a regular hex nut onto the bolt and then put on the Nylock. Hold the hex nut with an open end wrench and tighten the Nylock against it with a second wrench. This is called a "jam nut". Naturally the bolt will have to be longer to allow this. You still want 3 or 4 threads showing past the top of the Nylock. People who advise you to drill a hole through the bolt and nut and lock wire it have probably never tried drilling through stainless steel. Even with cobalt drill bits you'll most likely end up with a bit broken off half way through the bolt. This could succeed at locking the nut onto the bolt, but removing it later will be a pain. My guess is that your problem was caused by the bolt being slightly too short for the Nylock to function properly.

The boom bolt... most bolts have a slight tape3r at their open end to assist in starting a nut onto them. If there isn't ~3-4 threads protruding beyond the nut the nylon portion of a nylock nut won't have enough 'purchase' to allow it to retain itself. Also, whenever a nylock nut is removed it needs to be replaced, otherwise there's little reason to believe it will remain in place. They are pretty much 'one trick ponies'.

After pounding that bolt through while the boom was under load, you are probably going to want to inspect that bolt when you take the boom off to transport Ruby Rose. Also, if your water polishing system worked, draw up a system to install on boats, and one that is portable and get a patent on it. Start funding Ruby Rose 3.

Capt. Nick, probably you can teach me way more than I could with you, but consult with factory if you could apply LOCKTITE to that bolt that went off. Also check the pressure washer integrity. If you can you will assure that doesn't come out anymore, and apply it all around the boat, where needed. Be careful, there are some bolts that better no to have LOCKTITE. Also threaded bolts are better to thread or unthread to position, instead of a hammer. Looking good guys. Like the towel style Capt., unless running is involved. Love OsoYolo, Antigua Guatemala.

For the goose neck, just get yourself a new nut. Either it wasn’t fitted correctly or it’s been on and off a few times rendering the nylon useless. No need for drilling and split pins or lockwire with a serviceable nut. Loctite may help until you can replace it. I’m sure your Mk1 eyeball will see you right.
