Welcome Baily's. Alicia, the looking for spiders and snakes is a waste of energy. They will never sneak up on you. When you see them, stay calm, keep your distance, admire how amazing nature is and just keep an eye on them. Set that example for the kids. They're more scared of you. Huntsmen (spiders) in the house are amazing. They are never aggressive except if cornered (defensive mode) and are the ultimate hunters of cockroaches and other insect pests, especially at night. I've never had one crawl over me ever and I'm someone who with my brothers and sisters played with them (ever so gently). Like all animals, amazing. Possums passing around the house at night on their hunt for food will ''hiss/grunt'' at each other if territories are encroached or paths are crossed. Bird life is amazing and their individual calls like the kookaburras, lorikeets, magpies, butcher birds, cockatoos etc... are a wonder to get to know. The varieties are too many to list. Have fun. Most important re the kids is all of you learning beach craft. How to swim and then navigate the sand and the waves. First is to swim between the flags ie where there are life guards. All your new friends will point you in the right directions.

Welcome to Australia. Sounds like all your planning has paid off and you and your family are settling in really well. I am sure you will find your new life in Australia a really great experience for all of you. Your backyard sounds like mine with a lot of different birds chirping away. As to spiders and snakes, if you leave them alone they will leave you alone. Best of luck.

Don’t worry about the snakes they keep the rodents at bay. Nothing quite like trying to get to sleep when there’s a huntsman on the ceiling. As for the spiderwebs they make great hair nets.

Having been in the RAAF, 1970-1991, moved all over Australia, lived for 3 years in Hong Kong, 1981-83, I know what it's like to 'relocate' to somewhere different, in my families case, 14 times over 21 years. I commend you and your family for doing what you all are doing, a very daring, courageous, and challenging decision. We adults usually cope well, but, we found that our two pre-teen/teen boys quite readily adapted to their new circumstances. Welcome to Australia.!.

Snakes are rarely seen. They are rare in urban area environment. Spiders are more common, but you will get used to them.

Welcome to Australia, Alicia. It sounds to me like you are already very committed to your new country, although Ross from That Johnston Life did a video about 'ping-pong Poms' which is interesting. The biggest problem for women is the loss of contact with family and friends; it can lead to really strong pangs of loneliness which can become overwhelming. About three months from now, you will experience serious homesickness. You are already taking the right kinds of steps to fend that off. The mums and bubs group, the playgroup, all those people will give you a sense of being part of a local community. Don't be in too much of a hurry to spend that $5K on a private school. Australian public education is really good, and there's not much difference between areas. There are no ghetto schools, so the fact that a school has to use portable classrooms is actually a sign that it is in demand. Definitely have a look around, but you may not be getting much more than you would in the public system. From the parental perspective, Australia sets great store by the concept of 'confident learners'. They're much more interested in helping your kids try and fail, and then get back on the horse again. In Grade 3, our son was running the school assembly, reading out the notices, and introducing other kids playing the guitar. There is definitely not a focus on passing tests or things like that. They really let kids be kids, and that continues into the earlier years of secondary school, when you get to that point. Girls, in particular, learn not to take shit from anyone. Back to my earlier theme of not feeling cut off, the parents of your kids' friends will become your friends, and that, as they say, will make all the difference. I think you will find your feet very quickly, and there will be many surprises and discoveries along the way. And since everyone else has said not to worry about the spiders, it might be a while until you get your first huntsman spider in your house, and they look very scary, but as everyone will tell you they are fantastic hunters of cockroaches [which are huge in Queensland] and mosquitoes. It's been years since we had a snakebite death, but we've just had a shark death in South Australia, the first for a while, but we had almost 40 people drown at surf beaches this summer. Make sure your kids learn how to swim at a surf beach; there is a program called 'nippers' run by the Surf Life Saving Association, and it's well worth drown-proofing your kids. Kids love surfing. It's an Australian tradition!

Thank you, yes lived in Sydney before & I think that was the reason I felt so lonely because I only made one friend & she was my boss, so I thought I’d start the play groups & friend meet ups early, hopefully that helps, It’s just that at home I have a twin that we see & speak to eachother every single day, so not just like a normal friend 🥺 thank you! We’ve viewed a private school & loved it, we’re viewing the public school after the school holidays before we make our decision! Aww I love that, that’s so lovely, that’s so nice to hear too, we’ve had a baby huntsman already ahah, but I’ve seen the big ones last time we came, very scary looking, I’m more worried about the dangerous ones 😂 Thank you! @@Tiredasamother_ab Sydney has poisonous funnel web spiders. Qld has redbacks, but every hospital has anti-venom, and even without that, it would be unlikely for a redback to kill anyone except a tiny infant or a frail elderly person, and it would be rare even then. Redbacks hide under things like chairs on the verandah. They have little messy webs. Easy to spot and easy to spray. Use surface spray and they will die from walking over the sprayed surface. I have a spider phobia, too, but if you whack them or spray them as soon as you see them, you will feel more in control and less panicky.

Go to the beach this winter because it wont be long before you acclimatize, and you will find it too cold for a swim in May to August. Generally tourist swim this time of year and dedicated surfers wear wetsuits. enjoy while you can.

I worked for Education Queensland for a very long time. If you choose public education, I'm sure you will be impressed - more than satisfied. If you find that I'm wrong, then spend your $5000 on something of equal quality, that you were previously getting for free.
