I was caught up in a situation where she changed her mind after the child came to become a stay at home mom. The goal was to work together, both in full agreement only for such a turn around after child birth. In PA too. Currently engaged (2nd marriage) and education is big in her family. I asked the same questions he has and still no answer who and how it's being paid. Starting marital counseling next Wednesday to fully address it all.

Getting a degree just for fun is fine if you have the money. I once knew a SAHM that was in a master's program to be a nurse but only to better take care of her kids. Totally cool because her husband was LOADED, with an extra load. No loans or debt for them. Taking on debt for fun / status is insane. Why would you want to be financially attached to that?

And it's not.okay to take up space in higher education that.someone else would actually use. Nursing programs are hard to get into and we desperately need to train more nurses, not more housewives who think they are all that and a bag of chips because they went to school. My grad program dismissed a student who said she was a housewife who just wanted the degree to feel equal to her husband. Honey, if he's paying all the bills, you aren't equal, you're a Fifties housewife. Shut up and do the laundry. Th program turned away qualified people who really would have used the degree, and they are th ones who should get the education.

I’ll interject due to my experience in this field. I got a Nutrition/Human Sciences degree from a widely known big four year University. Was it worth it? Absolutely not. All my friends who went and got a Masters can’t seem to get a job and the ones that did went into totally different fields. Instead, I went and started my own six figure business in a completely unrelated industry. Proceed with caution young lady. That’s just my two cents.

Put this marriage on hold UNTIL you BOTH can agree how to settle a dispute when both sides disagree with each other. In marriage this will happen OCCASIONALLY, yet it is VITAL to the relationship to know how to do this. I have been married 18 years and in that time we have had a few difficulties reaching an agreement; however, the spouse that has more knowledge on the subject will be the decision maker. This has worked very well for us and neither of us feels as if one person is ALWAYS the EXPERT!

Some of this lies on the man not setting the standard and having a clear cut plan in place for their future before he proposed. Continuing education, career, and financial awareness not to pay for education if it won’t be used in a career. There is a difference between ruining dreams and taking a stand against a poor financial decision. Marriages break up because of debt and financial disagreements so you might as well step away from a relationship and not get married as opposed to being married enabling a bad decision.

I took a course in high school called Food and Nutrition Sciences a part of the social sciences available in high school. I did need social science credits towards the Early Childhood Education course I took in college. I also enjoy cooking and was a great class. I don't think I would have thought to get a masters in it. (And definitely not with the intention of staying home after.) Being a housewife is what happens between jobs if you get fired and looking for your next job...or later retirement. No one plans to stay home unless you are millionaires...and usually they don't stay home either.

We could be talking about a $200k difference in just two years.

The answer to your question is really quite simple.. The reason people pay so much for University is because there's morons that are still willing to pay for it. This is the same reason that a lot of low-paying jobs for years continue to have low pay. The people that continued to work for low pay. Well they basically maintain the system. And that system sees no reason to offer them more than they have to. So in the same way the university sees no reason to lower the cost or give a better product. Because why would they change anything when they're still useful idiots lining up for worthless degrees. Side note. At the end of the day.. It's not the people that stick around the change anything. Federal Student loans. Institutions can charge exorbitant prices because someone thought it was a great idea to let 18 and 19 year olds borrow, without question, hundreds of thousands of dollars for something that has no tangible value. My daughter is getting a masters degree and it's paid for because she teaches an undergraduate class at a state university. Second, there's nothing wrong with a woman getting an advanced degree and wanting to be a stay at home mom. An education is insurance in case of death or divorce and the woman needs to earn a living. Third, a degree in Nutrition is NOT a wasted degree. Retiring baby boomers need lots of help, coaching, and advice on nutrition and are willing to pay for it. Likewise, any kind of athlete or performer. That's a really good degree!

But she just started the degree, so if they get married in a month most of the loans would be initiated while they're married.
