Coco movie commentary
Coco is a sweet, heartfelt movie that we both really enjoyed making this movie commentary for. Whilst it makes a few fairly predictable story choices, it executes all of those choices super well and does a great job communicating the heart of it's story.

It's ironic that if Mama Emelda hadnt had such a strong reaction to cut off music, they would have heard the song. Probably got suspicious and asked questions. Then they would have found out what happened to him, and maybe have sued for royalties and sent De La Cruz to jail.

Looking back on everything Hector said before the reveal, it all makes even more sense: His disdain for remember me comes from the fact that a song he wrote for his daughter got turned into a Mexican pop song, and he's all on board with Un Poco Loco because that's actually a song he wrote as a crowd pleaser.

As a Mexican, I can say that Coco is a movie that explains well the importance of family and the Day of the Dead. Dante can see Miguel because he is a Xoloitzcuintle dog, these dogs are said to guide the souls of the dead when they traveled to the Mictlan (underworld), they were considered sacred dogs.

I especially love that moment when Hector holds the hands of his wife and daughter, and they walk across the bridge together, because you can see on his face how emotional this is for him because he couldn't even imagine that he would ever be accepted into his family, and just seeing that relief and happiness on his face as he walks with them is so powerful and emotional in more ways than one.

Something interesting about when Miguel finally gets his blessing: 1. It's from Hector, his great great grandfather, who he set out to get it from in the first place. 2. It didn't have any conditions attached to it. Because THAT'S what familial love is supposed to be. Unconditional. You can't force someone to live your way, because that would kill them in the long run. And here, that's taken literally.

I think what they were going for w/ the dog suddenly getting his powers was to give a parallel to Miguel, bcuz earlier in the film, he yells him that he's not a spirit guide, he's 'just a dumb dog.' The whole film, his family is telling him he's not a Musician. But it's only till right after he acknowledges Dante as a spirit guide, that Dante's able to unlock his full potential.

the attention to detail in this movie is incredible. it took me a few watches to realize that the petal doesn't glow when De La Cruz is holding it...because he's not actually Miguel's great-great grandfather. another one: the reason Hector walks so unsteadily is because he is already starting to be forgotten when Miguel meets him. YES! Finally the Coco reaction. I remember being an absolute mess after watching this movie, because I am a caregiver for my own grandmother. I especially love the fact that they really drive home the point that even though we know Coco as the elderly woman who is slipping away, the most poignant part of the whole film is a moment of connection from the older generation to the younger. The idea of passing on traditions and memories is so strong in this culture and in this particular film. Yes Coco is on her way out, but at one point she was just a little girl missing her father. I don't remember another Pixar film ever hitting me quite this hard on the whole. Other films have moments that absolutely have stuck with me, but this movie truly spoke to me in a way I didn't expect.

Yes, the Frida Kahlo jokes were on point; I think I was the only one laughing in the theater. She couldn't have children due to a tram accident, so she did a lot of self-portraits and painted her 'broken' body in a surrealism style to cope with the grief. It's kinda sad, but through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy, she just seems like a crazy person who's trying to make "art" happen.

I definitely sympathize with Mama Imelda and the family and the pain they went through from being left behind for music, but for all that family is so important, to ignore the needs and wants of someone in the family on the off chance that they’ll abandon you is messed up. Because if you instill family values and a love of family, that won’t happen. Meanwhile, if they had kept going down the road they were on, Miguel would have left regardless. And yeah, they could continue to blame music but the real problem is they made him feel unloved and unsupported.

Miguel is vocally warming up yes... but he's doing it with a "grito" at 29:17. It's a Mexican expression/yell- from the soul- that is often done when excited, happy, celebrating or sometimes sorrowful (depending on time and place). It's often yelled by men at the beginning of a really good song you're vibing with. You'll hear it a lot in mariachi music. Being Hispanic, (both sets of grandparents from Mexico) while watching a Disney movie set in Mexico with music, I was fully expecting to hear a grito. Glad they put it in🥰

Aaahh I love Coco! And yes the photos in the ofrenda don’t necessarily need to be family members, it can be anyone you want to honor and remember, which means that even if you have a falling out with your family there might be someone else who cares about you and puts you in their ofrenda. That being said, us Mexicans tend to be very family oriented so most of the pictures in our ofrendas are usually family members. And yes, the Frida part is very accurate. I don’t think she ever did performances of any kind, but if her painting style were to be translated into a performance it would probably look very much like what they have in this movie lol. She has a very particular painting style that came from her tragic life story. Anyway I really enjoyed your commentary as always! Hehe

I always assumed that Miguel entered the spirit world because he did desecrate Ernesto De La Cruz’s grave by stealing his guitar, and it being another hint indicating they weren’t family. But knowing now the guitar belonged to Hector, maybe he entered the spirit world because he did touch a forgotten artifact from his family.

The two things I love about this movie the most: that even when they're being unreasonable all of the adults are just incredibly concerned for the kid among them. All of them. Even the strangers. And that the vitriol towards music is so strong in the family specifically because the event that made it taboo is actually within living memory. Abuelita grew up with the hurt her Grandmother and Mother felt because of Hector's abandonment so of COURSE it's a trigger for her.

Thanks for your reaction and commentary to an awesome movie! Please remember that De la Cruz came from the same town as Miguel, and was basically a nobody when he broke into show business. That's how I take Miguel's meaning: If a small-town hick like De la Cruz could become a famous musician, then Miguel sees hope for himself to do the same. Also, I agree with you that De la Cruz putting the poison scene in his movie is evidence of his narcissism -- especially since his narcissism is pretty much on full display everywhere at his party. However, I see another aspect to it: His lack of creativity. It's so difficult for de la Cruz to come up with anything original -- including music -- that he has to take actual events from his own life to make movies. Rewritten to make himself the hero, of course, instead of being the murderer.

Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the altars, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything. Also, Dante is a breed of dog called a Xoloitzcuintli (Zoh-loh-eats-QUEENT-ly) or a Xolo, for short. According to the lore of the Day Of The Dead, Xolos were guides to the underworld. Also, a slap from a sandal or Chancla hurts, specifically on bare skin. That's why they're so feared in Mexican culture, especially when they're wielded by an elder. What makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in the 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face with one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢

The thing about only people who has photos put up can pass is just for the movie, I've seen pictureless ofrendas for those who don't have anyone, and chorizo is a type of sausage so yeah that's an adult joke lol

Big fan of the channel, but you can't pay me enough to watch Coco again. It's amazing and makes me cry every single time. I'll pass on this one gents.

At 4:22, I think it's more about, if someone from my tiny village with a similar background as me can do it, so can I. Ties into the whole representation matters argument.

Guys Xoloscuintle dogs (Dante's breed) served as guides to Mictlan (nahuatl afterworld) and Miguel was able to crossover because during dia de muertos it is said the limit between the world of the living and the dead is thinner

In México we have the idea that the xolo (the dog) is a special breed, in the ancient times they usted to think that they were a Kind of spiritual guide:)

The Book of Life is also a good film. I’m pretty sure that’s where they got inspired from.

Another fact: The world of the Death is inspired in Guanajuato city, wich is in my state. The boy who makes Miguel's voice in Spanish is from my city!

What makes this a little darker is the possibility Ernesto was plotting to kill Hector before hand. Who casually walks around with poison in their pocket?
