We're Making Quilt Labels - April's Craft Room is live!

Let’s make quilt labels. Quilt labels are like little history pages on a quilt. They can identify the year the quilt was made, who made the quilt, the name of the quilt pattern and sometimes even where the fabric for the quilt was obtained. I am HORRIBLE about documenting my quilts with quilt labels and I plan on rectifying that omission.
There are so many options - write with a Sharpie, write with a Pigma Pen and heat set, write directly on the quilt, write on fabric and adhere it to the quilt back, sublimate your message, embroider your quilt label, or use the alphabet on your machine. The options are endless so we really have no excuse for not documenting our quilts.

I love sublimating my labels. I’ve even added photos onto the label. I’ve added the baby’s name, dob, time of birth, weight, & length. 😅 They turn out so cute! 🥰

I use Pigma Pens for my quilt labels. These are pens that actually change the pigment of the fabric. I always let the pigment settle into the fabric for at least 24 hours. Then “set” the pigment with a dry iron. I have used this method for 30+ years on all of my quilts. Most of them have been used regularly and washed on a regular basis. Using medium pressure to write, all the label information is still on the quilts. I mostly use 100% cotton fabrics. I have used RFD (ready for dye) on occasion, but only because I had to purchase some for a fabric dying class and I had a it on hand. The Pigma pens are readily available at Michael’s and JoAnns, in the scrapbook section. I also draw, or trace pictures on my labels. There are books available with label pictures to trace. Be careful. Making labels can be addictive.

I was told the 14:00 permanent marker would wash out. So I have been sitting here all day embroidering my label that I'm going to put on a quilt. I'm not great at embroidery as a matter of fact I think this is the second time in my life I've ever tried it. I may be somewhat upset to find out that the permanent marker will stay.

Well you’ve got some tough detergent. You go girl! Guess you have to stitch yours out or use sublimation. Thank you for pointing that out. I will put a disclaimer in the video description.

All I did was expand your picture on my tablet (I-Pad) and it was fine on the replay. How do you adhere your labels to the quilt back?

@@MsDale1976 I sew mine into the corner as I apply the binding. Then hand sew the 2 open sides. Others put it in the corner on the diagonal then only have one open side to do by hand. Pat Sloan uses the diagonal and has videos on how she does it.

It is my fault. KZbin defaults to vertical and I neglected to change the orientation. One day I will remember. Keep telling me how much you don’t like it. That will help me remember. 😉
