WE'RE MOVING??? || HOW TO DECLUTTER BEFORE MOVING || BEST DECLUTTERING METHOD EVER | MINIMALISM 2021
Hey guys! In todays video I am actually PRETENDING I am moving in order to weed out all the stuff that's in my house that I don't need!!!!! This, by far, has been the BEST decluttering method I have EVER used!!!! i'm going to continue this as a series and do it with EVERY INCH OF MY HOME!
STEP 1
Pull EVERYTHING out
STEP 2
Ask yourself, would you bring this to a new home? if no, TOSS! if yes, PUT AWAY! voila!

When i replace most of the old cardboard moving boxes ill be getting heavy duty food grade lockable and stackable tubs (waterproof/bug proof/dust proof/dont need tape and scissors/more durable/looks nicer/can easily be repurposed to store things in the shed/garage or used for emergency type supplies in home - long term food etc) given ive moved a lot like A LOT lol days and days of driving type stuff and nearly 20 times or something insane i have a good idea of the how to of moving and have a real knack for it so i know what will fit in a box and about how many ill need etc but i do like after a really big declutter (think like 25 percent or more of your entire house) to go through room by room and actually pack as if i were moving - i dont seal the tubs or boxes but i do write down an inventory of what i have how ive packed it like a box with a blanket over delicate stuff whats with it what id designate as priority open first box that sort of deal then i deep clean the room as if i were moving out or moving in and nicely put thing away or even reshuffle the furniture layout etc too and when im done i know that all the decision making and a big part of the stress of moving is taken care of and i store those tubs and boxes in my room with the labels of what belongs in them and whenever i get something new i add it to the list just as i remove things i declutter and that way i always have a good idea not only what i have but how many tubs and boxes it needs to contain it. When you have this inventory even if you dont pack it up of multiple rooms or even your entire belongings you really have a true sense of ownership responsibility and it eases anxiety cause you have in the palm of your hand all the info you need... do i have this...do i need something...where is this...etc and by doing a search or find in page function you can make it a really quick and easy experience. Taking the decision fatigue and the brainpower out of not only moving but running your home and managing your inventory is really REALLY game changing. But its definitely a final step and full on task so not for the lighthearted or beginners. Its also great to hve you know for insurance and general security purposes too. Like after a move checking if everythings there as you unpack and then which room or space your putting it in in the new home.

@@A.L.75 I'm in the same boat. Moving, and told my husband I need to be ruthless with the decluttering as we pack, I try to explain to him just how overwhelming/stressful/unhappy the clutter makes me but I don't think he quite understands. Plus, I find it hard to feel like I'm keeping my home clean when there's piles of clutter in the way🥺 Moving is my fresh start, I'm just hoping it works out the way I want it to

I actually soaked all my wedding cards in Rosè wine after dropping a bottle. At first I was gutted but the cards I did keep didn’t last well 10 years on anyway, most of the adhesives had yellowed or fallen off, even on the wine free cards!

This is such a great idea for decluttering, we recently moved and the things we ended up throwing out were so worth it! Unfortunately our new home isn't ready yet so we are living out of a hotel in the mean time, but I can tell you our entire belongings (a family of 7) fit in 1 storage unit. I love this idea of declutering like you're moving.

You did an amazing job! I love how you reminded yourself how important it is to get rid of the items that cause you stress or regret. Holding onto stuff out of regret or guilt is never helpful and that’s something that really helped me be really, really intentional about what was allowed to stay in my home. Since 2016 I’ve decluttered my entire house multiple times and I love the process. I “edit” my house daily/weekly/monthly to maintain. It’s such a relief being aware of ALL of our belongings.

As someone whose moved a million times including interstate and cross country (australia) this certainly is the best way but its also very intense so save it for a deep spring clean time and when youre already decent at dwcluttering or youll just get overwhelmed. Declutter as you go before actually moving as you pack things. Then when you unpack declutter as you go as well. If you can spend a week without unpacking anythinf but essentials ans see if you miss or actually need anything and take it out when you do. Guaranteed youll have a lot of things that not only you dont need but dont even want. Great video defs a good idea for people who have lived in the same house for more than 3 years and have no intention of moving within the year. Heaven help the people who have lived in the same home their entire childhood and those whove lived in the same house since marrying and havent moved in decades. Cant even imagine all the things that are stuffed away and forgotten especially in those big old houses which lived through the times of plenty and excess and encouraged and praised materialism. If thats you hire a professional to get you started on the worst of it and help you aquire the tools needed to declutter and organise.

I moved in December. I got rid of a lot of stuff before moving but even more after moving. Make sure you check what furniture you’ll actually need in your new home. I could have got rid of a lot more saving time and money before moving. Don’t hang onto stuff you haven’t used in the last year or more. Treat it as a new start. X

I love that you are keeping real by not getting all dressed up to do a video. I would rather watch someone who would do stuff in their regular every day clothes, no makeup and or hair done. I just don’t understand how people can actually do stuff. If I’m not going anywhere, I usually am wearing my yoga pants and a t-shirt and pull my hair up in a clip or ponytail.

This idea actually came to mind recently to declutter easier i think. and that is to declutter as if moving so u get rid of or donate any u feel no need to keep for any reason now. like past self save for future self and so future self gotta rethink what ur next future self may want or value lol. hope that make sense lol. cause i read nce u declutter it becomes a habit cause when move anytime u try do and make less trips to truck , pod or whatever to get all to new place safe and easy. so to declutter as if moving makes it easier to think and know what u stil wanna keep anytime.

I know that you're still actively going through things or maybe you're done by now I'm not sure... I'm a little late to the party. 😂 Anyhow something you could do before actually buying containers is seeing if there's anything in your house you could already use or even taking like boxes from things and like cutting them down a little shorter to size or something. It's not pretty but at least you would know kind of what space you needed so that might give you an idea container-wise what to purchase and in the meantime you still have some what of an organization system without spending money. And then you can do things around and just see how you want it to begin with before you buy containers. Even if it's not ideal it might be good in the long run before you commit to something.

Love the 'after'!

My problem is I don't have a space large enough to put 'everything I take out'. our rooms are tiny....but I AM being as ruthless as possible before we move. sad though. Hubby said I have too many hobbies (he has none..) and expects me to do 1 hobby at a time until I produce things that he approves...then I should move to a different hobby - so sad....

Great video but I'm curious why are you still holding onto your kids completed school work? Also curious why they are being home schooled? Are they not missing out on being around other kids ? Or was it due to covid ?

Have you heard of Zara PhD and Minimalist Homeschooling? She has a concept for decluttering homeschool stuff. 3 bins: Now, Later, No. This has really helped me control our homeschool stuff

I enjoyed this video, but the music would get suuuuper loud when you'd transition over to it. It was 3x as loud as when you spoke. I'd have to turn the video down, every time...

Jill have you ever thought of making a homeschool portfolio for your finished school work? It’s a great way to keep samples of finished work for records but also your favorite projects for memories. It might help you decluttering further for more minimal homeschooling. I made a video on it if you want to see what it can look like. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4OkZHSinaiFeLs

I see it like this and how seen shows show people hoard shoes or whatever and make them declutter and pack it so they realize and see how much they really got any. so make them pack and move the hoard and maybe they gonna tire of dealing with so much they just deicde unload and try sell or donate or toss any later. it kinda like a wake up call they gotta deal or just cause arguements anytime. so see, sort and how often if gotta do u wanna pack so mch and move so much later. can only guess he gonna get tired of dealing with so much and unload any he really not wanna deal with later or anymore.
