Greenland is in North American territory and the last standing vestige of European conquest, while the Panama cannel was built by the United States with American taxpayer money. I don't believe it's the goal, I think we have a few trends that are causing this behavior. The first thing is heightening conflict of competing interests at home. Put simply, domestic wealth inequality has been on the rise since the early 70s & we're now in a place where many Americans are hurting financially. An easy solution would be to simply redistribute wealth, but the rich do not consent to such a thing & their money/support is critical in elections with modern electoral policy. So, war is an old tried & true method of economic stimulus for the US. Border expansion is even older. Some solution will be needed even more desperately if Trump's admin really does attempt to deport millions of people. A second trend is the world gradually moving away from US total dominance. Part of that trend that Trump has mentioned is "dedollarization," which is nowhere near complete but is progressing & is actually speeding up. This is a very complicated web of incentives to fight against & Trump has decided to try & fight it by showing "strength" -- if that involves further sanctions & tariffs I think he won't succeed. But this is part of why Trump is looking to control economic hotspots & choke points like Panama & Greenland. The third trend is global warming. This is why powerful nations have become so interested in the arctic: new resources & trade routs are being uncovered by thawing ice. This doesn't cover all the reasons why politics seems to be so wild right now, but it's a good start.
