I played PoE 1 off an on over the course of the past 4 years and never really could get into it, but with PoE 2 and and seeing just how GGG is handling the marketing and John Exile himself being so engaging and opening the curtain into the background of the game is just such a beautiful thing and I'm so hyped for the game I'm actually investing as much time as I can into PoE 1 and might actually swap between the 2 if PoE 2 is different enough

People are treating the game as if it was PoE 3.26, it's so dumb. We have ten years of PoE 2 ahead of us and if the game isn't well balanced a week into early access then it will eventually be over the next couple of months based on player feedback, so people need to stop sweating. I'm not totally immune to that mentality, but that's precisely why I'm playing SSF for the first time, because I don't want a meta influencing how I'm supposed to play the game. I'll be playing slowly, fully exploring zones, and only much later that I will start thinking about going back to a trade league and being efficient with my time.

If you watch the full interview he explains the issue is almost never raw player capacity it's server instance managers. So how the back end handles moving from 1 zone to the next and how those individual instances especially the starting zones handle it.

i think a very big reason for this is that a lot of hardcore characters die to disconnects and people really dislike that since losing a 100 hour or 500 hour character to a disconnect hurts very bad so when a disconnect happens it pauses you cant lose to disconnects :)

Absolutely. If you can’t overwrite them, then this can (potentially) cause the same issue they were trying to alleviate with the socket issues which is something like: I get a new piece of gear and I can’t use it because I already committed to runes in another piece of gear that’s good and I can’t change those now. There’s still a cost involved with using a new one, but it doesn’t force you to make a decision of “this is permanent and unchangeable” on gear while it’s a work in progress

True, this would mean you can socket subobtimal ones early and change them later if you still value the item, keeping the runes as a one time use item without the fear of having to choose between bricking the item or letting it sit in yor stash getting dust until you have optimal runes. They can add a specific currency for it or maybe pay gold/orbs to a vendor to remove/destroy the runes in the sockets, like the cube recipe in D2.

Instead how about a delayed release mission/challenge with unique encounters/mechanics and setting it up/marketing it as a worlds first race similar to Destiny 2 could be really helpful for POE2 on twitch and viewerships. And if they wanted to make it contribute to the revenue they could make a day 1 pass for the race cost x amount of points and after a few days it could be available for free. They could put cosmetic rewards behind your placement of the clear and then release some stuff as a pack later. To me its a win for everyone.

I think the issue is wanting to trade items but they're bricked by runes, or wanting to upgrade one item slot (e.g. gloves) and then not being able to fix resists because you cant swap runes in your other pieces. It sounds like runes are pretty common, so it doesnt sound like we'll need to get the runes back

You can have them get wiped of runes though, that's no issue. Only way you could make getting the runes back work is if you made runes a bit more rare and made the item that gives you the runes back out of an item very rare.

Fundamentally because they have said they want crafting to be a thing you do once on as piece of gear, so each roll is impactful, rather than scouring and re-rolling a thousand times. A set of currencies like you suggest are just a form of scouring orb for rune sockets. They just want you to make a decision and either take the gear or move on and sell/disenchant it.

Agreed 100% on having a force move keybind. I have intermittent neuropathy in my clicking arm. Just moving the mouse around doesn't agitate it, but spam clicking definitely can. Being able to bind move to spacebar would be a huge win.

I empathise with the issue there, and long-term I would be confident that this will become separately bindeable in the keybind menu (based on Jonathan being quite amenable to the idea in his response). Short-term, your best bet would be setting it to the the last skill slot on the the 2nd page of skills (by default bound to CTRL + key), and changing the keybind for that skill slot to spacebar. You do give up that skill slot, but it *seems* like that will be less problematic in PoE2 since it sounds like most builds won't have enough spirit for the plethora of auras we typically reserve in PoE1. Just speculation obviously, and not ideal that it takes a skill slot but in the short-term that's the only real option apart from WASD movement.

I think if they did include a target dummy they would need to be able to present it in a way that doesn't make it feel like the tacked on arcadey mechanic that it is. Like the quad stash tab thing, I get where he's coming from with it. It kinda further diminishes your items into being simply values on a screen when you can shrink them down like that. Things that are just there "because it's a video game" clash with immersion.

they could just allow you to 'overwrite' runes that are already in gear if they dont want you to unsocket them. just drop new ones in ontop (maybe a confirmation window so you cant accidently do so?) and it replaces the rune in that slot, destroying it.

In regards to that first question, I think Helldivers 2 could be another good example of community working together to achieve global goals. I feel like it is such an under-explored game design element that can work extremely well in getting newcomers involved in the community, building bonds etc

Having people join factions that are trying to outcompete each other. There are many options for what this would mean. The leaders could be pinnacle bosses that are tracked, and a mtx set could be the outcome for the winning faction that would be added to the game.

I thought the return to mirrodin had a guaranteed outcome of phyrexians winning (since the set was designed in advance to print) but that was hidden from players for hype reasons. Not trying to downplay it, it was very hype, and is way more doable with a video game than a printed card game, just thought the clarity was important.

@44:22 Crit changes - I think they can just make the monsters crits on a timer instead of randomly rolled. So instead of 20% chance to crit, its evey 5th attack is a critical attack. That means tension and expectation can be offered and its more skill expressive.

Otherwise it's going to be a real mess of logins and I think the strain on the servers is going to be even higher if people are downloading 100 gigabyte package... X however many people are going to attempt to log in that day! The amount of data is going to be staggering!

They really should do it, it's gonna ruin the launch for so many people not being able to play 6th, I know potential server issues yadda yadda, but honestly don't think server issues will last more than an hour, if there are any. Being able to pre download the game and be there for the hype instead of sitting in the darkness being depressed and staring into the abyss for like 8+ hours will not be a fun experience. I mean the only con is potential datamining, but there's so many pros.

yeah but i can definitely see his point aswell, the first thing thats gonna get pointed out is stuff like penetration or overwhelm not being accurately represented based on the dummy stats. and then the problem becomes whether or not you add a boss dummy f.e., well what about uber bosses etc. the problem is if you can create that feature without leaving it in a state that people arent satisfied with. because if most people feel its insufficient its just gonna become obsolete and having a badly implemented feature is often worse than not having it at all, especially since PoB already exists. its just a really tough decision as a game designer.

I think two dummies is a good idea. As long as they're clear on the stats the dummy has, we can mostly work the rest out. I'm not against a long-term solution of highly customizable dummies, but right now we just need something.

The notion that "at some point to have the actual boss itself, might as well just use that" is confusing to me. It's said in a way that to me sounds like he's saying just fight the real boss, which misses the whole point of having a dummy. Bosses tend to be locked behind a grind to get one shot at their fight, so people want the dummy so they can try and see if they even have a chance or if they're just wasting their time and resources. If he meant having a setting to do a mock fight against the boss, that would be pretty cool and actually helpful. I hope that's what he meant and maybe they'll introduce something like that. It's not like you're getting EXP or items. Maybe unlocking a boss dummy after your first attempt at them if they are worried about spoiling boss fights.

Honestly, the thing I hate most about the goblin sound thing is that it sounds off before the town even visually renders. It's like the top priority thing to let me know that some ass has the goblin in town. It's really not that important. Also like 10% of the reason that I basically just mute PoE while playing.

Problem with starting hardcore and once u die u just play softcore is that just your char gets transfered, all your stash will stay in hc unless u create a bunch of chars and kill them with full inventories. Just something to keep in mind :D

Okay... re Ziz's idea about a league which the player base progresses: You occasionally drop map modifying currency which allows you to convert a map into a mission for a faction. Every time such a map is completed by any player, it goes towards that faction's progress, which will add their influence increasingly to the atlas. Beating these influenced maps will decrease their influence in the opposite way how completing maps modified with the aforementioned currency increases their influence. Each faction has different items, quest types, monsters, bosses. As the league reaches its climax, one of the factions will come out as the most dominant, at which point (like 1-2 months into the league), they take over the atlas completely. All of their buffs are removed, most maps become strangled by their influence, becoming much harder (a la gauntlet). That faction's boss morphs into an uber version, which becomes the big resurgent event. We create event leagues for the first week where new players in a fresh economy race to kill this new uber boss before other players have a chance to fight it.

I know its something ggg is known for but its so cool to see a dev hear something that is frustrating to players, say they never even thought about it, and then say they will look in to changing it with the rest of his team. I understand where Jonathan is coming from with the target dummy. Unfortunately, people like to complain as soon as they feel the slightest inconvenience, so introducing a mechanic into the game that isn't fully fleshed out would likely end up resulting in a lot of complaints from people who start using it, as once they get the target dummy, they will then expect more, and if they are listened to, things will inevitably become increasingly convoluted.

You get used to it and having everything together on one huge page is great for full build item organization. Play your starter and have a couple end game builds in mind and when you find pieces that are good for them, place them in the quad in a line. I like that personally.

Especially with the way there are damage values in poe 2 just being able to gauge dps on a statonary target you dont have to worry about dodging would go a long way torwards making building easier for people who dont normally make their own. Myself as example would make more of an effort if i could see number go up in a controlled enviorment.

The reason I don't like it is removes any doubt or mystery. With PoB, it is still wildly innaccurate, so even if you or some streamer thinks they have the best build or best version of a build, it could actually not be. With a target dummy it will be much more clear cut and more meta-y.

@@_Titanium_ How is PoB "wildly inaccurate"? If you set parameters to unrealistic values, then of course the numbers will not be relevant in-game. PoB is all about how you use it, but it is certainly not inaccurate, outside of a few bugs that crop up from time to time (see tinctures last league)

14:00 the discussion about logging is really interesting. Totally agree with Ziz about the issue of over leveling when you’re forced to commit to the boss. I think there needs to be some way of attempting a boss without character loss being the immediate punishment. I wonder if there is some other more satisfying mechanic other than logging out to accomplish this though.

For those curious, the league Jonathan is referring to while answering the question @ 1:20 is Warbands, not Tempest. Warbands mobs used to move from zone to zone on the world map based on player activity in a zone or map. They released at the same time with 2.0.0 launch. Warbands was the softcore League and Tempest was the hardcore, so it makes sense that Jonathan would mix the two together.
the one thing i really want a dummy for in the hideout, isn't even damage numbers. it's to be able to go "oh, i'm applying this many poisons at once" or "oh, this is how many stacks of wither i'm getting" and stuff like that. Literally just to have a punching bag to mechanically test certain skill interactions

About the go to last checkpoint thing, make it a button in a random spot everytime you press esc so it cant be macrod, essentially you would have to get to a safe place, then click. Emulates a safe disengagement in more of an rp way

So I'm surprised you didn't bring up the fact that Diablo 4 has a Target dummy system that you can switch between multiple mobs, or a single boss. These are stationary targets that you can test your damage against and see how your build is actually going to function. This does not replicate any kind of boss fight or give you any kind of other advantage. This is one of the rare instances where Diablo IV and blizzard actually did something well. Jonathan is way over complicating what you are asking for he needs to calm his tits, and give us Target dummies

on the rune part, something they could do, is getting broken runes back, or different quality, say you find a pure om rune (i havent looked into what theyll call them) thats good for 3 uses, once initially, then when the gear gets replaced it falls out as a normal om rune, and that normal one falls out as shattered, something along those lines, lowering the friction of upgrades but also giving them some sense of permanence, shattered runes basically performing the exact use they have now, drop 2, put in chestplate, find upgrade, same runes go back in, odds are youre not finding ANOTHER chest upgrade. thematically could go steps further, runes used in combination with specific other runes could degrade into different unique runes/runewords or having to slot in negative affixes to get desired outcomes later simpler is probably better tho i dont mind the current system, just excited to play at all :)

This is it. It's good to not have a solved game. It's good when players have to kinda vibe check their damage occasionally, rather than having a tool which says "this is the best possible set up." It's funny that ziz talks about how bad it feels to be "forced" to use something, and yet asks for something which would create that condition.

It is mostly for new players, fast experiments or if you don't want to use third party programs, just swap gem / item and check on dummy, if you have more damage or no.

@@cr6458 Exactly. The ambiguity, the testing, the trial and error is such an integral part of the game at this point. I don't understand why people would want to trade that for a dummy that would incentivize you to do this pointless exercise instead of actually playing the game. Like, the argument doesn't make sense on any level, and the fact that Ziz sits there all matter-of-factually and says "there are no good reasons not to have a dummy" (slight paraphrasing) legit pisses me off.

I like enemies being able to do critical hits, but i agree that having an obvious animation would make it more interesting. Like, "they triggered the internal crit check and now they can use this special attack sequence", that would be fire.
