‘We’re right back where we have always been’: Trump scapegoats DEI in DCA plane crash

President Trump’s politicization of the plane crash outside of Reagan National Airport isn’t just deeply offensive - it’s reckless endangerment of the American public. This rhetoric is part of a broader right-wing campaign to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across the federal government and private sector. “It is a decidedly racist, sexist, and masculinist agenda,” says Eddie Glaude, Distinguished Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University. And it reinforces the false, racist claim that meritocracy and diversity cannot co-exist, says Melissa Murray. “When we didn't have DEI policies, when we prioritized the hiring of white men, we were effectively looking at only half of the talent pool.”

A diverse employee payroll isn't bad if it happens naturally. If your payroll is diverse without specifically looking for a certain demographic, then that's great. What we are seeing is not that. I'm in no way saying that is the situation at hand for this particular incident. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. We don't have enough information yet. I've heard that ATC is understaffed because of their limitations on who they are willing to hire, which has been an ongoing issue for years now.

Rebecca Lobach had 500 total hours [over five years which is unbelievable] which means she had less than 100 hours of night flight experience and most of that would have been somewhere else. Most Captains don't acquire that rank until at least 750 flight hours. For most of the last two years she worked in the Biden White House in the Press Secretary's office. The FAA does not hire d e i Pilots to fly planes. They of course would have to be licensed bonded insured trained and go through tedious hours of training and hours of experience, background checks, approvals, there is no way that our previous or any government would allow someone with any mental incapacity to fly an airplane on any given day and be responsible for anyone in our skies....... does he really think that this would happen??? he must have dementia to think that this would really really happen!!! There was a class action law suit which was granted certification in February of 2022. It was based on the FAA rejecting White applicants with 100% scores in favor of people who scored lower but had some type of impairment and/or darker skin. Hundreds of Qualified people received a letter from the FAA stating that, despite their perfect or near-perfect scores, they were rejected because the FAA was "implementing changes to improve and streamline" the hiring process for air traffic controllers, aka D.E.I.

If you hire based on DEI and then it turns out a person who might benefit from DEI happens to be at the controls when something goes horribly wrong it might not be unreasonable to consider that it might be DEI rather than competence that enabled them to be in that position in the first place.

If I need to hire a bunch of people to do a bunch of work, I'd set a certain standard and evaluate that way. I wouldn't go at it excessively looking for the best, but if I needed 1,000, I might do double, or triple that amount. I believe diversity can have benefits, so I would probably have some bias in my selection, but not extremely. Now, when I got home and wanted to hire some kid to cut the lawn, I wouldn't be spending time looking for the best as if the merit of someone cutting the grass means something. We know what tRump did with the same 2013 policy in his 1st term, he is trying to find something else to blame it on. Good luck, as if your games will stop another disaster, it won't!
