As someone from the uk who was around their ages when this came out it always felt like an ode to the chav culture around our generation. The song is basically insulting all the people who were like that around us but also accepting that we all had good friends who were also like that, hence the line " you just can not get angry in the same way".
@chrismartin2663 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wonder if this idea doesn't really translate to the US. One of the beauties of early arctic monkeys was how relatable everything was, and it would be pretty obvious to people who grew up with this. I was in the uk when this came out but a transplant in the US so maybe its doubly hard to consider what a US equivalent to chavs would be, but I bet there were people for who "only music so that there's new ringtones" would have fit.

Keep in mind, they were like 17-18 when they wrote this absolute masterpiece of a song... The whole album is a masterpiece too.
@Alpha_7227 Жыл бұрын
That might be the reason they don't play the song live any more; they just don't relate to the words now. It's such a banger, the way there is light and shade.

I know this is an old video, but would say From the Ritz to the rubble, fake tales of San Francisco would be good. Oh, and when the sun goes down of course. This album was really relatable when it came out, but some songs are harder to culturally translate. This song is a about having friends who are "chavs" - the sort if people wedded to sports fashion (classic reebok, tracksuit bottoms tucked in socks), for whom there was only music so that there's new ringtones (2000 - 2010 saw a thriving ringtone sales industry), who after a few cans of probably high alcohol low taste beer think is ok to act lick a dick-head. The singer is saying he's not like them, and hates people like that but still, he's got a few friends he grew up with that have gone that way. Honestly pretty much everyone did back then, same the other way too. Not sure if there's a US equivalent to this but anyway, you get the idea.

Fab comments Chris 😎 The 'chav' slang is interesting ... Trying to think of an American equivalent ... maybe like a Slacker, Punk or a Tool. The athletic gear thing is kinda everywhere so to me that's just normal.

I find it funny you think of beach and surfing and that dick dale sound. Sheffield where they come from, is so NOT like that. This song i guess is about, you are growing up and you are seeing those (ex) freinds, who are now hanging about on the streets. The line Tracky bottoms tucked into socks, is an image which conjures up exactly the person they are singing about.

What a great album. So sorry that I went down for them after that brilliant debut.
@srodgers66 Жыл бұрын
Ha! I do agree, but commercially it hardly went down for them. They managed to move on from a huge iconic record and it's really hard to do that. Oasis made the mistake of continually trying to repeat Morning Glory whereas the AMs continually reinvented themselves.
@alexis72ism Жыл бұрын
@@srodgers66 Well we are talking about music quality. Commercial success is coming when everyone knows you and expects something great again. That didn't happened with AM. By the way I never liked Oasis even though bought morning glory. I'm a Blur fan and that's also a good example how you can reinvent yourself without loosing that lick. Maybe the US life made them a bit plastic.

The Arctics had a brillance to their lyrics in the first few albums that still ring true after all these years. My interest wained when they dropped that focus & went off in other directions. They are a great band but they got bored with doing what they were good at & at the same time lost my interest.
