Similar question to the caller. I drive a 2014 Honda civic. Heres the kicker, It already has 117,000 miles on it. It will be paid off in 2 months. And the dealer will give me 7k trade in value. I commute 4 HOURS a day, should I drive it until it dies? Or take the 7k, and get a car with 40k miles for about 3k more (paid cash)? @thedaveramseyshow

Annalisa M well it depends there is bad parenting in some aspects. Some people want to go to private university’s and they treat it like a competition of who gets into the better schools. Many high school graduates go to college without doing math and knowing the debt there getting themselves into to. You can easily get a bachelors degree spending 20-30 k on tuition without any aid. However there are some teens that dont listen and feel like there entitled to go places they know they cant afford

My deceased dad used to say " in the end a car is just a pile of steel and plastic" He was right all along, it took me many Years to agree with him. We live in a society and economic system in which many of us have no choice but to own a car, the trick is to not let the car own you. Another of my dads sayings was " A car is like another family member who eats at the table with You". I think a car has the potential to cost more than an additional family member, if you don't make wise car choices. I haven't had a car payment for longer than I can remember, I'm currently going on my Third car paid for with cash. I've never owned a brand new car in my life, however I've owned pretty decent pre-owned cars that were well cared for. I'd much rather keep more of my money in my pocket than have a brand new car along with the car payments, higher excise taxes and higher insurance costs, I've been there and done that and I'm not going back again.

Just think about it the average monthly car payment is about $500, And that doesn’t include full coverage insurance which will probably be an additional $250-300 depending on factors affecting your insurance rates, in a year together you’re spending on average close to $9,600, and over the course of 3 years, that would be just shy of $29K. I have bought used cars And even with maintenance cost that I have to pay out of my pocket in that three year timeframe I spend a whole lot less than that $29K.

I drive an 07 ford sedan. Over the past year, I have paid for more in repairs than what I would have paid if I had car payments. And it still needs around 2k in repairs. One of the flaws of Dave's approach is he doesn't really consider the repairs closely enough. Nowadays, mechanic's labor is very expensive and a simple repair can set you back hundreds of dollars just for regular maintenance, if you're not mechanically inclined or do not have access to tools and a driveway.
@guywithford50097 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I am in the same situation. I feel like Dave's advice is more geared toward people who finance or lease expensive cars without having any serious income and means of paying them.
@baronvolkov61727 жыл бұрын
I see this misconception people have, thinking that a car with payments will not break because its relatively new. That is very far from the truth. All cars can break, so its not a matter of paying for repairs or payments. Its paying for Just repairs or repairs And payments.
@baronvolkov61727 жыл бұрын
If you dont have the money to pay for repairs without even thinking if it will set you back then perhaps if you're a man you should get inclined mechanically and perform the repairs that cost hundreds of dollars yourself. You dont need to be replacing transmissions, transfer cases or doing motor swaps in the driveway, but understanding function of the motor and doing repairs that would normally cost 200-600$ Is not a difficult task for a serious man.
@guywithford50097 жыл бұрын
It's not always about being mechanically inclined. You need to have a set of tools and a place to do basic repairs, even an oil change. Me personally, as a college student living on campus, I don't have a place to repair anything. Our main point was that Dave's logic on car payments has undeniable flaws and is somewhat outdated, since the mechanic's labor has became absolutely sky-high over the past decade. We aren't saying new cars don't break, because they do, they just have a warranty which assumes the entire liability of the repairs and maintenance. For example, BMW offers inclusive maintenance program which covers your repairs. My friend who has a nicer car than I do has paid less substantially over the past year than I have, since I had to foot all the repairs myself.
@jacked_geek7 жыл бұрын
Mistake #1: Not paying for the skill. Pay someone a few extra bucks who is mechanically incline to inspect the car prior to purchase. If you are going to go cheap at least do it right. Mistake #2: You bought a ford. I personally won't buy old american vehicles. Go toyota, honda route if you are looking for reliability.

The problem with Dave Ramsey is that everything is black and white with him. No middle ground or gray areas. I would never go to this man for advice. I know my circumstances better than him. I financed a new car about 7 years ago and did not regret those car payments one bit. Reliability and having a car under warranty (and an excellent one at that from Hyundai) was far more important to me. All of my prior cars were over 100k miles and constantly having random expensive issues. I use my car partly for business and having to cancel clients because of a breakdown did not look good for business. And I live in an area where taking a bus or riding a bike is really not an option.

Just realize that the card company charges a transaction fee to the dealer and the dealer passes that along to you in a higher asking price for the vehicle. If a dealer lets you put the entire car purchase on a credit card, you’ve left money on the table from a negotiation standpoint.

Tejashwini Karthik Car dealers know exactly what their cost is on any vehicle they sell and they have an absolute minimum price on every vehicle where they will not agree to the deal if the price is too low. The listing price of the car is more than this minimum price of course. They want you to pay the listing price and you want to get as close to their minimum as you can. If you put the car purchase on your credit card, they will subtract out any fees charged by the card merchant to be sure they are still making money on the car. It may incrementally help your credit score, but there are many other ways to do that as well, including just using your card for day to day purchases and making regular payments, ideally paying off the balance each month.

Once I'm up around 10 to 12k I plan on buying a car that's a year or two old with cash. I've seen some pretty good quality and far more economical cars in that price range. It's nice to see some sort of confirmation that I'm talking proper steps to advance myself. This actually works very very different in Europe, where VAT is like ~20% . Car payments (leasing) for a company make loads of sense because you can write off the entire cost of leasing as expenses plus possibly write off a portion of the VAT on the car payment. Finally you can get a leasing plan at 1% per annum because the leasing company writes off the car itself so it doesn't declare profit that year. When you combine all that then you get the car for less than the gross value + sales tax. You can ofc beat that 1% PA cost by paying everyting up-front but you get your VAT and company costs back after 5 or so years, which kind of introduces a different problem because you don't have your own money back fof a number of years that you could have put in an investment fund.

Basically, he was a guy who bought cars at auctions that caught his attention, repaired them, drove them a little, and then sold them. He only had about 10 cars at a time and only showed them on appointment. He also was a realtor and didn't stay at the garage, where the cars were, all day. So unlike other dealers, he didn't NEED to sell cars for a huge profit. It was extra income for him, and a hobby. I found him on Craigslist and saw the car 2 times before purchasing it. I also watched Chris Fix on KZbin. He had a detailed series on choosing a used car.

To add to this, going on a low interest payment plan frees up that money to pay off high interest debt or to be invested in mutual funds that pay higher interest rates than your loan costs. My dad has been financing stuff he could've paid cash for for years and he did it because he could make more in diversified stocks than he would've saved by paying cash up front and not paying the small interest on the loan. The most important thing is being practical and not upselling yourself into a car that costs far more than you can afford.

Car broke down a few months ago, was about to get lured into a $500-$600 truck payment every month thinking “oh I can make that just fine, can’t wait to be driving such a nice truck!!” Thankfully family convinced me to zoom out. Ended up buying a used 2001 ford ranger with only 50,000 miles for $11,000. BEST DECISION. Now I’m not stressing every month

It all depends on your situation. Car loans & credit cards can be good for responsible people trying to build credit who want a nice car. Especially if they don't have any other debts or loans.

So the moral of your story is to build your credit so you can borrow money and remain middle class.....smh

InsideOutside UpsideDown its more of a trust thing. When businesses run your credit and it's good they more so trust you and yes are likely to give you the loans which can mess you up and keep you regular

Reel Deal ive been right in the middle of this. Save your money, buy with cash, don't go into debt. The FICO score is an I love debt number.

This doesn't help me at the moment...My car is literally death sputtering as we speak. She was fine yesterday and suddenly on life support today.....
@melissadavis21025 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think this is more for "middle class" than those with sputtering cars. I think guys like this forget that when you have to choose between paying a car payment or not having a job.. you need the car payment. It's not an option.

How much do you have now to buy a car?

Best part of the video is after the 6-minute mark. Dave gives everyone a template for problem-solving that applies to just about any problem, not just cars. You first decide where you want to be (the "end state") and once you have that figured out, only then do you figure out how to get there. In this case, "end state" is better car for wife, but no car payment. And the answer became obvious - upgrade in two steps, not one.

2001 Mustang with only 200k Miles? That still has a good 100K Miles left.

His advice as good as it is, is not 1 size fits all. Of course some guy making 15 hour should not buy a 50k car. But I drive a 2015 Kia with 250k miles 70 miles round trip to work. I would now say I average 150 a month in repairs and who knows if the big repair bill is around the corner. Not if but when. Why wouldnt I buy a new Kia, 20k after my trade in , and have 375 month payments. Now I have ZERO repairs and peace of mind for 5 years,, also I drive my grandbabies everywhere. I guess in small town in TN where he is from a 2k beater works going 4 miles to work. And not everyone has 15k cash for a good used car...And I dont want to hear my monthly payment could be used to invest, I did that this year and im down 8 percent. Not totally arguing with his advice but everyones situation and whats important are different.

Car payment would be 300 plus insurance that’s about 4-500 a month you have to pay for about 3-6 years not worth it

That's why my dad and I had bought my first car in full! I paid half! We had bought a professionally inspected, minorly flood damaged 2007 Lexus GS350 for $7,000 last year. It runs like a dream!

If you drive a car then you will always have a car payment. Whether you are paying it the the bank or putting it into savings to pay for the next car you will eventually need, it is still cash you have to allocate for a vehicle. That said, of course it is always better pay cash for a more moderately priced car but don’t labor under the delusion that you don’t have a car payment.

Ehhh that’s not the same as a car payment… you should be saving money anyways for another car or for any other future purchases that you will need to make, but that is not the same as a car payment where you are paying interest for the privilege of using the banks money to buy a car that you could not afford to buy with your own money and they will come take your car and keep all of the money you paid if you start missing your payments… THAT is a car payment and THAT is not the same as saving your money for your next eventual large purchase

This year, I bought a six year old Highlander Hybrid with no down payment. Yes, my monthly payments are high. But I rely on my vehicle and spend a lot of time driving. Plus I enjoy cars. So I’m willing to pay for things I enjoy.
