I knew a couple of guys who evacuated their families, while they bordered up their homes. They knew that they would be the tail-end of the evacuation crowd and wouldn’t have time to reunite with their families or find any motel rooms, so they rented a U-Haul truck and packed their sleeping bags in the truck and drove as far out of the rainfall and slept in the U-Haul truck at a Walmart super mart parking lot that was open 24/7.

With that amount of traffic, most of the hotels and motels outside of the hurricane landfall will be booked. Unless you have relatives, you’ll be either sleeping in your vehicles in a parking lot or on a cot in a large arena with a hundred other people.

400 PM CDT Tue Oct 08 2024 The Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters found that Milton's central pressure had fallen to 923 mb in the last pass they made through the eye a few hours ago. The satellite presentation has improved since that time, with a thick ring of cold cloud tops surrounding a 10-mile-wide eye. This pattern yielded a T7.0/140 kt from TAFB, with several of the objective satellite estimates between 140 and 145 kt. Milton has again become a category 5 hurricane, with maximum winds estimated to be 145 kt. Another Air Force mission is entering Milton as we speak. - NOAA website

Over time snow related deaths are a high statistic but all those deaths are not newsworthy because it’s normalised.

If not, the same thing may repeat next year, the year after, and forever after. Yes some people have to stay. Local governments will have designated folks across different areas that are required to stay. Larger cities will have a command center that can sustain these weather events and high water rescue vehicles to bring in folks to work.

We were told if you were a certain classification we didn’t get to evacuate and they would send vehicles to get to us if trapped. Perhaps in this situation they’ve truly kept it bare bones since some of these folks could do work remotely. But this is the pitfall of working for government. Depending on what you go into and the event you are considered essential
