Great stuff! More of all of the above. Many channels do the gear reviews but the idea of doing 'from first mike to mix to master' would be a breath of fresh air in a genre which is becoming gear acquisition orientated. Making the best music you can with the gear you have should surely be the goal.

Awesome. I’m going to do some mixing ones in the new year. Might even stream them live. Not sure if people are keen for that?

Man, that's some nice hardware you have there. Sounds great 🤘

Thanks heaps. Yeah it’s been a long journey of collecting stuff. I feel like I have most of what I need now. It’s addictive though. Hahah.

Genuinely was shocked when you said there was next to no processing at this point. That's amazing, would love to see more of this!

Yeah crazy hey. This is what you were supposed to learn at TAFE 😉 All that fancy gear can go a long way to shape things during tracking. Will definitely be doing more in the new year. Toying with the idea of finally getting something live streaming going too.

I always throw a little reverb (maybe even some echo, depending on song) on the monitor/headphone mix for the singer but print it dry. It gives the singer some love but leaves final choices open.
@diyrecordingstudio10 күн бұрын
Yeah fair enough, it’s a safe way to do it for sure. I’ve never had any issues with compressing a vocal in tracking though. Saves time in mixing.

Merry Xmas Mitch..... really appreciate the walk through the vocal chain you are using.... cheers 🤓 PS. I see that you have refreshed the knobs on the 369, I am still waiting for mine to arrive 😢

I always track vocals with compression, sometimes a bit of EQ. I agree with you that I get better performances out of artists with compression. I feel like the compression gives you the same feeling of singing live where the PA system and the dynamic microphones almost compress the voice as well as the room you’re in helps with the sound dynamics.
@diyrecordingstudio10 күн бұрын
Yeah absolutely. If you have good gear, why not use it right? It’s crazy that people seem scared about over compressing in tracking but that’s what a good tracking engineer is there for. Hopefully we can all undo this “do it later” ideology. Keen to catch up with you at NAMM next year man! Are you going for the whole week?
@RPMusicStudios9 күн бұрын
@@diyrecordingstudio I'll be there most of the week. I'd definitely like to link up with you and talk studio stuff!

I know a producer who has a commercial studio for 30 years who has two Neumann TLM103's He didn't have the spiders for the mics so he ordered two cheap knockoffs from AliExpress for 27 bucks so he could use the spiders because the Neumann spiders are 250 bucks each. The spiders didn't match the screw threat so he couldn't use them unfortunately. He ended up doing a shootout with the AliXpress knockoffs against the real ones and the result was impressive to say at least, only minor difference that would be almost impossible to spot in a blindtest. I just ordered two of them and see how they standout when recording a band in January 😉

Those Neumann shock mounts are atrocious anyway haha. The rubber bands fall out of them all the time. So impractical.

Great vid, I happen to completely agree about getting your "sound" going in during tracking, if at all possible. at least do the heavy lifting, and it does make a difference to the performers to get inspired with their sound while recording.
@chrisdover850711 күн бұрын
Can you make the sessions available so we can use them for practice? Even a mix comp
@diyrecordingstudio11 күн бұрын
Great idea Chris. I can’t do that for these tracks but I’ll have to get something that won’t have any clearance issues put together or something in the new year perhaps?
@jadedsean11 күн бұрын
Great vid, I also use hardware on the way I but never use eq, wouldn't be brave enough I think. I notice you changed the knobs on the B369 could you by any chance share a link so I can purchase them please?
@Chaos-Dynamics11 күн бұрын
Eq can always be undone later, compression can’t be undone so be cautious with compression but go ahead with the equalizer 😊
@jadedsean11 күн бұрын
@Chaos-Dynamics true but using eq introduces phase either in tracking or mixing so having to use corrective eq after the fact is only a consequence of making these mistakes in the first place. I would much rather use it afterwards and minimize these phase tendencies.
@Chaos-Dynamics11 күн бұрын
@ Eq is phase change, don’t worry about it

I think we have a different opinion of what sounds polished mix wise. I don’t think you’re there yet. Love the channel though.
@diyrecordingstudio11 күн бұрын
Definitely not mixed yet Chris. I mention that in the video, it just about getting it as close as possible to sounding mixed so that when I enter the mix phase I have to do a lot less! All the best.
