Bears are attracted to food and a pop top offers no protection from food smells and determined bears. They are also adept at opening car doors, including sliding ones. Having to leave your camper to use facilities in the night also not recommended.

That’s right that lifestyle is totally different in America to the UK. Nomadic lifestyles has changed in America, since 2007/8 when the Market crashed . It’s too often a necessity for people to survive. Alas you can get some dodgy people living the Nomadic life now. I think that Liam and Janine want to recreate Tread The Globe , to appear as a kind of Novelty . But Chris and Marianne had support with many friends , relatives and their Aunt Julia. They really need to get real and adapt to the situation if they are going for a full year. Buying a British pop top Camper is unrealistic.

Seriously guys, I would consider not shipping a UK vehicle over to that states. You really need to have the steering wheel on the left of the vehicle, especially for some of the more mountainous areas. It needs to be a four season vehicle (seasons in the UK and very different to seasons in the USA/Canada), and it needs to be suitably safe from wildlife. People are offering really good advice. Having lived in an RV, you really need to make sure youve got the right vehicle. Roads sizes are also very different to those in the UK.

Don't forget that vans in the USA run on Gasoline and will generally have an automatic transmission. I wouldn't recommend taking a diesel vehicle from the UK as servicing/repairs will be more complicated. I'm a fleet manager with over 1k vans in the USA and another 600 across Europe so have some experience. Maybe it's not a problem but at least take it into account.

fly to Phenix, Scottsdale, Arizona there's 40 motorhome dealers over a matter of 10 miles to Apache Junction from the down town core. 90% of all motors are sold in the states are traded on that strip. Buy in America an American coach easy for repairs and parts as well as capable dealer ships all over the U.S.A and after use sell most often what you pay for......... after using it ........ I did it, and had a blast. great white north .......S

I think you'll be happier if you bought a used van in the US. You could use the money that you would save from expensive shipping to purchase things from Amazon or at Walmart to make it comfortable. You wouldn't have trouble sellling it when you leave the US. You could contact someone like New Jersey Outdoors Adventures with Patrick who deals with these type of vehicles daily. He has Facebook and KZbin channels.

I hope you find a van that works. Just wanted to say, in the States things are far apart - you won’t be strolling into town for a latte! Some things to consider doing/having - good water storage, electric bikes, vans that have four wheel drive (if you intend to go into the boonies), a National Park annual pass, joining Harvest Hosts, acquiring a satellite phone for emergencies, bear spray and excellent insurance for medical emergencies. Good luck

Hi there, I just can't understand WHY you would want to buy in the UK and pay huge fees to ship it when you could save money by just buying a van in the US ?? And there can be no shortage of vans available there, given the huge van-community. While I can see the advantages of the smaller VW, it seems to be rather a better van for days/weeks away, but to live in FULLTIME it seems to me to be a tad small. Yes the big camper was luxury but there are vans sized in between the two that would have more space and be much easier living especially full time !!! 🦋
@sloneygrl4550
@sloneygrl4550 21 күн бұрын
@@didevilliers1238 Because American RV’s are expensive. You can buy a Chaussen for 72,000 dollars. French made, very slick and far more stylish than anything made in the USA. Yes, they would have to consider transport and import costs very carefully but I have a Friend who just purchased her Volvo in Sweden, drove it around Europe for six weeks as she took her vacation and then transported it to the USA.

Don't get a coach-built camper like the 2nd one in this video. They aren't suitable for anything but driving on good roads. Built with bits of wood, plastic and insulation panels that are held together with glue, staples and wood screws. If you want to truly explore the wonders of the USA, then get a large van based camper, something like the Hymer Grand Canyon S. Or a cheaper Mercedes Sprinter based model. MWB Sprinter is the way to go, and if it's a 4x4, then it would be perfect. If you can't get a 4x4, then a rear wheel drive model for sure. Another problem with any of these motorhomes is, as you've discovered. They aren't built for more than a couple of days off-grid. I can stay off-grid for as long as my 100L of water lasts in my home built van.

We have enjoyed following you guys for many years. We live in Las Vegas and have been camping part time for over 20 years. In my personal opinion it would be a big mistake to get any kind of van with a soft pop up top. Also one of the other biggest mistakes is a VW type van with a high center of gravity and a short wheel base. They are dangerous at high speeds and my cousin was killed in one that went off the road when a big 18 wheel truck passed by them. In many states the speed limit is 80 miles per hour. They felt uncomfortable driving at 80 mph so when a big truck passed them they were only going 65 mph and the 80 mph big truck blew them off the road in a turn on a windy day. And remember, here in the USA many drivers often drive over the speed limit. I would never drive a VW van here, even if someone gave it to me free. Especially a high top short wheel based one. Please read my other post about cartage toilets. Love your videos.

I have noticed at least one other suggestion of a truck camper or demountable as they are known in the UK. The US is the home of the truck and the truck camper. They have so many advantages, most have permanent beds and a shower/toilet. A US truck with the demountable camper is excellent value for money in the US, probably almost half the UK's price - there are plenty of used rigs available in the US. If you need to get repairs or service done on the truck, you can happily use the camper while work is being done on the truck - you don't become homeless! A truck camper can go places any RV or motorhome cannot, and a truck is relatively economical by US standards. Finally, something like a Ford F250 will be easy to run and repair in the US. The truck needs a few minor modifications to accommodate the camper - nothing that specialized. Ideally, it should be fairly easy to buy a truck-camper combination ready to go. Best of luck with all the plans!

We have a professionally converted long wheel base Transit Custom camper van with a pop-top after downsizing from a 2 berth motorhome. It took some time to adjust to the smaller size, but for extra storage I fitted a bike rack on the back and mounted a Fiamma Ultra box to it. Our camper has a fixed toilet and a shower. There's also a net that clips to the roof at the head end of the bed so the pillows don't fall off the end. I love having a camper for the way it drives and the ease of parking and access under height barriers. Not sure that'll be a problem you'll come across in the US. As someone else has mentioned you should have a look at the Travel Beans channel. They were going to ship a van out but decided to buy one out there instead. If you haven't watched their channel you should take a look. I'm sure they could offer you plenty of good advice and useful contacts.

US resident here. We spent 2 weeks traveling the UK last September in a Sunlight i69, and it was a great trip. That being said, you will need to consider a few things bringing a UK camper here. The RHD will be a pain here, as everything is obivously set up for LHD, but you have dealt with this in your EU travels. Plugging into the mains will present a challenge, as the campgrounds have a 30amp, 50amp, and 120v / 60hz. The diesel thing won't be an issue other than the price, but you will get much better mileage than a US vehicle of similar size. Most get low teens here, if that. Lastly, A/C is something you will probably want. It gets HOT here, and the vent windows will probably leave you wanting more. You will have a great time here once you get in your groove!

I have seen lots of people lose the window above the cab especially with high winds... it needs to be secured down when driving ... in fact all the windows need to be locked when driving. However the van layout you rented is very similar to my van and I lived full time in it for 1 year. I looked at a lot of layouts and this is my favourite. I only moved out as I moved to Lisbon. As I said before, using a chemical toilet in the USA is problematic as they do not have the facilities, however I know a lot of van lifers fit compost toilets that are more practical. Also a rear camera is a must. Also budget for a decent solar system and inverter so you can wild camp, and use your hairdryer!

The shipping fees and weeks of waiting and the security concerns of breakins during transit aren't great. I'd recommend buying a truck camper like a Ford F250. Can buy the camper attachment separately or together plus it sorts the RHD issue and you'll then always have a place to stay in the states like Travel Beans instead of stressfully packing everything into a 1 year trip with a ticking temporary import timer constantly in the back of your mind. Also would give longer term options of exploring Canada and Mexico etc. Also remember that Ram Promasters are essentially Fiat Ducatos. For UK insurance on a UK van in the USA, you'll need to have your existing policy amended at quite a cost and I doubt they would pay up anyway. In the states you could try Country Financial for insurance and there's always the much cheaper option of insuring it as a normal panel van where the conversion isn't covered. After you've got the ball rolling in the states, I'd reassess your plans for what van (and how) in the UK after that.

We have one of those overcab panoramic windows & I’ve never known one of those windows to just blow out… are you sure you didn’t have it open while driving? Surprised the rental company were ok with that, they usually make you pay for any damages. If it was shut down & secured then it shouldn’t have happened, very odd indeed 🤔

Buy one in the states - cheaper to buy for a start! Then you’ll need someone who can work on the specific camper. You’ll want left hand drive. You’ll want tip-outs to increase living space. Have driven across the states and CanAda multiple times! Buy North American! Also be aware - many sites won’t accept campers over a certain age.

Best advice is to rent a camper for a couple of weeks when you get there so you know what you're dealing with. Then buy. If you buy an inadequate vehicle, you'll not be able to sell it when you leave.

I like the motor home. You will have lots more room. But in America you will either need bicycles or motorcycles to travel some mountain roads and higher elevations. The motor home will be perfect though in the Florida Keys which are a MUST to visit. You can actually look in the clear water and see all sorts of fish & sealife. Liam needs to try wind-surfing or wind- sailing. Janeen will live the warm (hot) waters of the Gulf Coast of Florida. Florida has the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Gulf waters on the west. Key West is both. You also need to plan a visit to North Carolina and Tennessee. Especially Tennessee. Be sure to check about overnight parking / stealth parking for EVERY state. In Tennessee overnight roadside parking is not allowed. But there are National Parks that have all the amenities you want. In Cades Cove Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park overnight camping is very reasonable. You can leave the camper and rent an inexpensive vehicle and tour the surrounding area. Which has a LOT to see. Can you tell I'm excited for you? 😂

Best idea is Class B Sprinter type camper van conversion, four wheel drive, A/C, diesel or gas heater, lots of solar panels/battery power. Bigger RVs not practical for exploring North and South America, too hard to maneuver in cities and small towns, beaches, wilderness, and too expensive to drive. Lots and lots of highway miles, expensive gas and diesel. Lots of good layouts to choose from, but loo/shower essential, full time bed so you can just plop into bed when exhausted or sick, and with a “garage” underneath for stowing toys, bikes etc. Buy in America…too expensive to ship and too many horror stories of vans be stripped and damaged in shipping. Just saying 😍

Whatever you do please think about how many miles you will be racking up and what that will cost on a daily basis. Our friends have a small Mercedes camper with a bed and fridge and burner, but no bathroom. They live in California and go up the coast to Canada to visit their friends and family then come across to the North east coast to visit more friends and family including us and then return. When they get back home they have driven at least 10,000 miles. They get on average 25 MPG. A rig like the big one you tried probably gets between 5 and 10 MPG. You have probably thought about that already, but just in case. Fall foliage (October) in Vermont is gorgeous, but then I would head south because you don’t want to camp in the north in the winter. Good luck.

Maybe find something Janine would feel comfortable to drive and understand the running of. Liam you are great at doing the lions share of van related stuff but long term in another country like the states in all the different conditions and absolute vastness, you both need to feel confident to take over. I presume you both have 7.5 ton licences due to Morgan.Janine, hop into the drivers seat when you are trying out these rvs and get some practice, you can do it! I can only echo the other comments re buying over there, people say the roads are huge but in my experience I've come across many smaller roads and no safety barriers, just mountains and sheer drops and I would not have wanted a right hand drive! It's going to be such an adventure!

Love your outlook on life. I now live totally off grid on my own land, but spent 13 year's as a nomad in vans. I have had small (renault master which isn't that small) a bus an old school motorhome and a modern (hobby 750). I spent 30year's as a long distance truck driver, yet now live in a self built hut in the wood's in the process of rebuilding a proper old school mercedes 608d. My only advice is this. What ever vehicle you choose (my choice being my old merc) is your bed must be the most important element of your decision. You spend a third of your life in bed where you body mind and soul can rest and recharge. Everything else you can work around.

The bigger the better for the States, parking larger vehicles there isn't such an issue and the roads are geared up for them. A left hand drive would be much easier and safer - I drive in US for 2 months of the year and wouldn't want a right hand drive. Also agree with the other comments, petrol and automatic definitely the way to go although diesel isn't too difficult.

If you take a van to the US from the UK you will still have to pay for an extension of your motor insurance to cover the US. If US insurance rates are so much higher, this will be reflected in your UK based insurance premiums, or there will be all sorts of limitations or exclusions. Remember you are paying for US medical costs as part of third party motor insurance- no NHS. Even if your personal travel insurance covers any medical costs that, God forbid, you may incur. I cannot believe that shipping can be economical. Also, how long will shipping and customs/border clearance take both ways?
@petercornish9903
@petercornish9903 22 күн бұрын
Not just medical costs, US law awards far more than England and Wales law awards for compensation for injuries, which is another reason why US motor insurance rates are so high. However, I don't think that you will get cover much cheaper by buying it in the UK, and you will have all the trouble, expense and delays of shipping a van with the controls on the wrong (right-right) side.

Just my thoughts. Parking spots in US are on average 9 ft by 18 to 20 ft. If you want to stealth camp a conversion van is the best. Then, you need to think about repairs. I do not know what vehicles are available inUK. In the US ford, GMC, VW parts are readily available. Mercedes are ridiculously expensive. French and Italian vehicles are less common. I have been told German vehicles are the best for 4 season vehicles. Regarding showers: vanlifers often get a membership to Planet fitness. It is a gym that is cheap about $10 a month with great showers. My friends membership even let a guest come with them. All my friends with vans add a mattress topper. Thank you for parking in Seaford. My family lived there in 1970's our place was right across from the sea. I think I saw it when you did a drone shot. Hope the info helps

Diesel fords and sprinters are widely used in the US i would also take into consideration the cost of fuel and the distances you have to travel . My first trip in the US fuel wasn't a issue at £13 per fill up . Now your looking at $3.80 diesel and $3.40 petrol per US gallons . VW parts will be limited and expensive compared to the commercially used vans in the US . I wouldn't see using diesel as a issue as most all trucks use it and its become popular in the large puckups . The more moden sprinters do have issues with EGR clogging up constantly If not serviced .

If you're driving in the states you will need a left hand drive. Especially if you're planning to stay and travelling about for some time. That sunroof failure that you had isn't unusual. It's a known defect on that type of mobile home. If the sunroof is left open when driving air is dragged into the driver's cab creating what is known as a venturi affect . High pressure in the cab low pressure outside. Net result the sunroof is pulled out of its mounting. I'm surprised that the hire company didn't warn you about this issue. Maybe they didn't know and haven't read the safety reports? Also if you need spares for fne motor home it will be easier to obtain them for an American make of motor home than ine manufactured in the UK.

Hi from Las Vegas. I think you should check out waiting until you get to the USA and buy a van or RV here. You should rent one for a few weeks before you buy one here. We have a 5th wheel we pull behind a diesel Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup truck and have been camping part time for over 20 years. Over hear you can get anything from a camper van to a big bus motor home. One thing that is a big difference here is that most all (99%) vans and RVs do NOT use a toilet cartage system. As a matter of fact I know no one who uses a cartage toilet system here. And if you had one I have no idea how you would dump it, other than going into a bathroom and dumping it down the toilet. The campsites and RV parks just don't do that here. Over here we use a completely different system. Although I'm sure some one may have that cartage toilet system, I only know about it from watching KZbinrs from Europe. I have never seen it here. At the least, check it out so you don't make a big, big mistake. Also, there are thousands of camper vans and all sizes of RV's for sale online that you can check out the price and features. But, be careful, although most people will tell you all about the problems of their new and used RVs, there are unfortunately some that will hide the defects from you. What may look like a good deal could turn out to be a nightmare.
