My husband and I have been watching your videos and I just subscribed to your channel today. We are still working full time although we've been working on retiring (from 8-5 job) early since we started working. I agree, there's no magic formula to achieve FI. Thank you for sharing your journey towards FI so people (who listen to you) could Relax Early and enjoy the many wonderful things that are available. God Bless!

Thank you for the tips.. Everyone is different, I am 51 and my wife is 48, with 4 kids and still have 14 and 7 y/o but we are gazelle intense putting money in our TSP/Roth IRA we both put 15% and company match 6% our salary, we have pension for working in Fed govt and while still working we are travelling. we had no other debt except for our mortgage which is 2.35% so we invest our money instead of paying our house. I am watching all retirement advices because we are learning a lot.

Love following your journey! I’m working on the investing aggressively part to hopefully retire before 50 I also saw a fee only advisor and they gave me some decent tips that I’m incorporating. I plan to see another advisor in about 5 years once I’ve accumulated more assets.

Congratulations I to meet my partner on the Camino in 2017. Unfortunately we are different ends of the spectrum. I own my own home and will be retiring next June, she had virtually nothing to her name but a backpack and hasn't saved much since. My regret is that we can't retire at the time.

I love watching your videos and want you to know, that euphoria never goes away. Or at least not in the first seven years. I retired late, at 56. But, I just have this thing about focusing on the dividends. Those don't really help you as much as a psychological thing. This in itself is not proof but, my worst investment, by far, pays 7.7% interest. But, it's only down 50% y/y! And that's still not the reason I don't care much about dividends. I monitor my portfolio value each week. I don't care if a dollar came from growth or dividend. Not much of a financial advisor fan either. They'll tell you to always contribute to your retirement plan to get the match. Then they'll tell you "you're 65 so you should have 40% in bonds." You could live 30 more years! Why wouldn't you keep a year, two or three year's expenses in a 5% bond, to cover market volatility and keep the rest in equities? I'd much rather spend money on a tax advisor. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much!! We are definitely considering putting some funds into bonds as we have now commuted the pension (prior, that was acting as the bond portion). We are still moving things around a bit! The fee only advisor is perhaps a bit of a misnomer. They are they ones that calculate and develop a drawdown strategy that is the most tax efficient based on where we have our money. In addition to that, our accountant also looks at the plan, and between all of us, we hope that we have a fairly tax efficient withdrawal strategy! Thank you so much for your support...and this euphoria we have right now is amazing! We hope it continues the same as yours 😊

Teachers are offered plans but you must teach 30 years or you are penalized- 7% per each year you retire early.
@FIREWeGo
@FIREWeGo 7 ай бұрын
That is similar to what I was penalized for leaving my job early as well. But the additional investments we built up made it so this was not an issue. We then commuted the pension and invested it ourselves. It will continue to grow inside the LIRA until later in life, and at the moment, we are living off the dividend and investment income.

While consulting with a financial planner is adventitious, I don't agree with securing a fee-only financial planner. While the name fee-only financial planner makes someone think, you pay a fee, they establish a plan for your retirement and you are done, in reality there is a set percentage that they receive yearly while your assets are under there management. This could be significant for someone during retirement. I think you leave a lot of money on the table in this model. Flat-fee model where you establish a plan with their guidance and then execute is more beneficial in my view. Just my opinion. I say this because many people think a fee-only financial advisor is a one and done expenditure. But thats no true in that model.

You are talking about AUM, not fee only . Fee only is a one time thing until you hire the financial advisor again to review a plan a few years later if you so wish. Fee only=flat fee. AUM = percentage of entire portfolio for as long as you are with that advisor
@FrankieBr
@FrankieBr 7 ай бұрын
@@nh154321 I don't know if this a US thing, but most financial planners that I've come across that say they are a fee only financial advisor charge AUM. I was surprised by this since I believed as you describe that it was fee-only and I paid a one time fee and done. That has not been the case. Then after digging deeper I found that truly one time payment advisors are many time considered flat fee advisors. Perhaps it's the way they advertise for clients. Just a heads up.
@FIREWeGo

You definitely need to make sure what you're paying for. In our case, we used a Fee only planner to assist us in developing our drawdown strategy, and it was a one-time payment. They didn't in any way manage our investments, so we didn't have to pay any percentage to the. You're right, though. There can be differences, and you should always discuss the total fee structure prior to using anyone 🙂

Easy answer to that question--did you say we are ULTRA wealthy and won the lottery! It's a combination of Family Wealth being handed down generationally AND luck at the roulette tables/lottery!!! I am SO BAD--I couldn't resist saying that if anyone asked!!!

No, we did not say that, but perhaps next time we will answer with that to see the reaction and later explain how we achieved Financial Independence :)
