As the customer in question, I’m really appreciating all the comments on the direction of the design, and several have even pointed out things that I hadn’t considered such as the end rails being rendered a little useless with the topper on, and the topper edges taper being reversed. The involvement of the Wyrmwood fans, and how the Wyrmwood team engages with their clients is one of the reasons why I approached them about this build versus going in another direction. Thank you to everyone on here providing feedback, and to the Wyrmwood team for dedicating this time to an amazing looking mockup.

Love the brass ferrules and the mid century aesthetic. Make sure to have any accessories that have metal pieces to be also offered in brass for a cohesive material package. Imo the more "Maloof" the design can get away with while remaining modular (and not exploding you manufacturing SKU count) the more it communicates design intent vs. an after thought modification to the previous design. Excellent session gentlemen!

i totally get how someone in a 1950s era-built home would want something like that. ive had thrift furniture from that design aspect, and if you have everything from that era, it does have a really cool vibe.

I'm glad Ian addressed the splayed leg aesthetic. Most mid century modern table tops had quite the overhang to address the trip hazard of splayed legs that Ian also brought up. So having that topper piece with a large overhang is right on point with the look. Too bad they're not looking to stabilize that aspect but change it altogether, but I understand due to the limitations of function over form in this case.
@thorin01
@thorin01 4 күн бұрын
I can see a couple of possible ways to stabilize the toppers but they have serious drawbacks. 1 - Increase the size of the topper so proportionately less is hanging over. But that renders most of the existing topper storage solutions useless. It also makes toppers far heavier and more unwieldy. Plus, new parts as opposed to repurposed parts. 2 - Attach stabilizing bars (2-3), Something attached to the topper that slots into the rail system. That also requires building new parts. That also detracts from the mid-century modern look. 3 - Find a way to lock the toppers together that’s stronger than the magnets. That would require a complete redesign of the toppers. As you noted, the vault and its functionality is antithetical to the the aesthetic.

Near the end you touched on making the apron look slimmer would be more true to the mcm aesthetic but obviously being limited by the fact that there's a vault in there. Adding a 45 bevel along the bottom edge of the apron would help a lot in visually slimming it down imo, its common to see it on table tops/sheleves for the same reason.

As someone who has an mgt and lives in a midcentury modern house and would love it if more of my furniture fit that era, i think the tiny thin legs look silly with the chonky vault. Looks like one of those cartoon opera singers with the huge torso and tiny twig legs on stilettos.

@Matt-pz4we
@Matt-pz4we Күн бұрын
I feel like mid century would have all of the topper bevels rounded as they waterfall off the edges vs. the sharp angular lines. Though in order to look right the toppers would likely have to be much thinner than they are. I’d do flat end toppers with the curved corners, something I wish had been available when I ordered my MGT 2.0.

Good point; it would also visually make the topper look larger so they may not need to add any extra overhang.

Regarding the curve at the end...Wyrmwood used to frequently reference the "prophecy" curve that was often duplicated in other furniture and accessories. It is a more subtle curve that might work well without hanging over as much. Would likely still have the accessory/magnetic rail issue that others have mentioned, but it would still be nice to see a version with this approach.
@ckartsonis

Add a curve to the side rail underneath the curved topper, give it more support and will look more modern with the toppers off
@Oxblood1987
@Oxblood1987 4 күн бұрын
You should make the end toppers longer, remove 1 middle topper panel, and split that into the ends to remove some of the curve leverage. Also, if you build the curve to cover over the clipped end, then it won't be an issue.

I love the idea of offering different styles of legs and toppers for the standard table. I think you should expand this concept to offer other designs beyond Mid Century Modern. @BurningSleepy38

@@WyrmLyfe Your point is valid but games/crafts can still be done while the toppers are on. That's one of the selling points of the table is that multiple games can be set up at once, one dormant underneath and one being played on top where the magnetic accessories can still be used. Yeah it's only the ends of the table but that's likely the DM, where accessories are even more important. Hopefully a tighter curve fixes that!

If the customer wanted a big curve to help with the leverage of the overhang you could include a cornice or bracket option the locks into the magnetic rail so it is removable when the toppers are not in use. As a thought. The above being said I saw some worried about the outside magnetic rail not being usable. You could design this support piece to be a boxed out faux aprons with magnetic rails in them. This could allow for the use of the outside rail with the toppers on. Additionally, if its profile and dimensions were right the end faux aprons could still be useful as a middle divider inside the vault while it is in use.

I currently have a mini coffee table and recently did a puzzle in it and boy not many puzzles fit. 15.5" L x 24" W just squeezed it in there. If I could get a custom apron get the vault a little more to fit more common puzzle size that is still under the next table size. like a 20" x 28" I would put that order in. Realistically that mini should be half the vault size of a small table.

To support the extra overhang the end pieces could lock into the inside rail. This would make it a little difficult to insert the last, non-end topper as the end pieces would not then be able to be last. But doing the "last topper" as 2 center pieces tented might make the squeeze work.

I love the look of it, it is very classy. my problem is i have 6 feral children that don't know how to walk past or sit down with out ramming or power slamming down on it so i could just see one of those legs snaping at my house. just to preface i had to replace 2 couches in 3 years so i build and upholstered my own out of dimensional lumber so they couldn't break it. 5 years later and hundreds of flying belly flops onto it, it stands strong. but back to your table i love it i think in the right home it will do amazing and everyone has there own esthetic. even if it wouldn't look good or work in my home i think its a great idea and love that you all are willing to do this level of customization. My thought on the overhang is i like the large curve so why not make a double wide toper peace for the ends? then it has more leverage to not get lifted off.

Love the curved topper with the curved corners. I would like to see that curve transitioned down to the rail and top of the leg instead of the bevels, with the shoulder like on the first example leg, then down to a turned rounded leg, but of a much less taper. Like double the diameter Ian had with just a tiny bit of inside-out taper. Yes, it is not mid-century modern, but I'd say a softer look than all the 45 degree edges.

Eh, kinda awkward. The inescapable part of the table is the vault, which is just never going to play well with midcentury lines that want a natural flow and rounded everything; the end toppers' curve means you've lost a lot of the utility of the magnetic rail. the big vault/tabletop and tapered legs in my eyes gives muffin-top and I already have that problem going on in my wardrobe. To be fair, I'm not a fan of midcentury and never have been, and this is what another customer is trying to achieve. But personally I suspect the mismatching elements are going to mean its not going to sell many from the custom shop.

Meh. This table needs more than what they are proposing in order to make it truly MCM style. 1. Bring the end apron DOWN at the ends (NOT UP in the middle) to form the Maloof arch with the table legs. Yes, this means another part variant. BUT you aren't going to introduce a new design without adding variants. 2. Although spindle legs are a styling cue for MCM, you don't have to. Instead just taper the two interior sides of each of the legs, and on the side of the legs where they meet the end aprons, have the taper flow into the arched apron mentioned in #1 above. This will look much more MCM and will echo the rounded topper.
