They were really lucky, illegally riding a train is not common at all here in Switzerland because there are so many controls. Especially in the SBB trains. In the local trains there's usually self control and very rarely a dude controls your ticket. This means if they'd have taken the IR 90 from Sierre to Brig, it wouldn't have been so dodgy.

Despite paid tickets and beds, so many amusing and challenging things had happened. I wrote a diary (I was a poor student those 12 years ago, but no need to carry expensive stuff and worry about batteries ;) ), need to read that again now. Even translated to English for some foreign friends. Anyway, one cannot experience things and meet people by staring from window or to Windows. Tom, you're doing an inspirational thing to make people dig out of their molehills.

That was amazing I really felt you guys on the scooting part because my mate and I were walking from our hometown near Stuttgart to Straßburg through the Black Forest this summer but took scooters with us which we carried on our shoulder (works out so much better than you would expect) when walking and used downhill or on even paths When we reached the Top of the Black Forest we were extremely excited to scoot the entire 700 meters we walked up all the way down to the height of the rhine which was actually about 300 meters further down than our starting point Up to that point we had only walked/scooted on cycle paths but then for our way down we would have had to use a road without a path besides it, just like the ones you were using. Fortunately we managed to find one of those streets which was under maintenance at the moment and therefore fully closed. Except for the bit of road under maintenance we had the entire street for ourselves until we reached the first village (which is already as far down as the other side of the forest where we came from). The Problem was that those 700 meters height difference between the top amd that village makes extremely steep roads (for scooting down on them anyways) and we had to hop off every once in a while just because we where getting to fast. The Breaks of my buddys scooter were screeching just like Gregs were but we had tires which had a layer of rubber outside the plastic core so obviously it only started making that abismal noise as soon as that entire 5cm layer was worn off and the metal break was touching the core. The rubber did not only silence the noise until it was worn off, it also reduced the heat of the break, so regarding your experiences we were pretty lucky to have that protection because we used the breaks for the past 70 kilometers (of course not as intensively). And coming back to the closed road, we only used a 'only car road' once and for about 400 meters a bit further after that village and it felt extremely dangerous with the cars rushing by so maad props to you guys for doing that for probably the majority of the descend! (if not the shot where the truck was passing you looked daring enough xD) Greetings from said Hometown in Germany 😅

The upper floor is resting on those stone pillars with the carved out stones preventing rats or mice from reaching the upper floor.
