Thanks for trying this out. We have been considering one for our show. It did give you a few cool shots but I don't think it would last long exploring mines. There are too many hazards with the narrow passages and timbering. I am glad that you were able to get it back up without getting stuck!

I agree but there are ways to minimize that risk. I have never dropped an ROV in a mine but have built a few and operate them professionally. Clump weights, a gripper and maybe even a 2nd ROV could minimize the risk. Something I have always wanted to try, just not with any of my ROVs. The best solution for mine diving would be to custom build something with multiple camera, 4 thrusters, tether weaved into rope and an HDPE frame.

You might be able to reduce the ROV sensitivity in its software if you plug her into a pc. Can't imagine you would overlook this as a needed feature if manufacturing ROV. Maybe call the manufacturers if you can't find anything in your instructions book.

With a lot of deep sea ROV vids I see they have a pair of parallel lasers a foot or so apart that provide the operator with a range to orient on, and provide researchers with scale. Might be helpful. IDK what you could use to figure out up and down, maybe a weight on a stick

Thank you for the posts Gentelmen - lovely as always. I wanted to air a grievance in general and it's not directly aimed at either of you two but that said - if the cap fits. We're asked to consider making donations if we want to help preserve and protect these old mines, which on the face of it, is a reasonable request, agreed? Okay my gripe is this - why are the majority of these sites entrances not even recorded on standard OS maps? Why am I denied what is clearly given freely to a select few? Why even bother preserving these sites if most of us are denied access to them and their locations kept secret? Vandalism is the standard response given when challenging the exclusive access policy protecting most of these wonderful places - really? How often do you find teenagers traversing along these dark wet flooded tunnels and caverns armed with a paint spray can?

Ahh, yes, a true false floor. a false floor you can not see as they are wooden platforms covered with dirt and rock and look like earth. Most mine explorers call everything wood they can see as a false floor, which is false, if you can see the wood, its not a hazard, its when you can't see the hazard, thus the hazard of not knowing if you are on solid earth or wood covered with earth that could collapse. So, dear mine explorers, please stop calling everything wood a false floor. I hardy ever discover false floors, so that term should be hardy used.
