I started painting the same as you. Invest in an air water/oil seperator ( they are fairly inexpensive) and install inline far from air compressor. Smaller compressors work hard when painting and heat up air which cools and condenses on the way to your paint gun causing water vapor mixing in paint. The more you do this the easier it will get. Your paint work so far is great keep it up!

Never paint while it's raining unless you have a pro paint booth. The increased humidity just wrecks the paint job.

I just found your videos about a week ago and have been watching them non stop. Watching your videos fixing up wranglers gives me hope that we can eventually fix my husbands 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sahara edition. It has been sitting for a few years and he had to stop driving it because it is stuck in 2nd gear. When you press down on the clutch it doesn't even let you start it. It acts like there is no clutch. They had to replace the clutch in it a few years prior since the clutch went out on it around 150k miles. We love that Jeep and would love to get it road worthy once more.

Wipe it down with reducer and get all the blue off (same stuff you thinned the paint with), not so much thou as to start affecting the primer. Then lightly resand it with 500 grit to recreate the bonding surface again. - that mapping looks like you might i have some leftover grease that got smeared around - i always wipe down 3 times with wax and grease remover and tack-rag twice before spraying. Not sure about the moisture comment above, could be right, ive always sprayed in a warm professional booth, but the temp def. needs to be 70 or above or you will need a fast-drying reducer for the color & clearcoat reducer, and fast-dry hardner for the clear-coat. Ask the guys at the paint shop the proper type of reducers and hardeners for the humidity and temprature that you'll be spraying the color and clear-coat in. FYI an autobody supply shop might be cheaper and more helpful, open an account with them under your LLC that you have, or will create, all these things are a tax-writeoff, ur runnin a (youtube) business ;) - add onea' these suckers to all your sprayguns! - www.tcpglobal.com/TCP-MF-201.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_92Lruz-2QIVD43ICh08MAgfEAkYAyABEgKfYvD_BwE

If you guys get a older jeep you should consider tintable Raptor bedliner to paint it. A buddy did his Suzuki Vitara woods buggy and it looked great. Tinted it red. Easy to spray. He used three coats and held the gun back a little for smoother texture. And since it's tinted clear through if it scratches it isn't as noticeable but so far it's held up to abuse. I really think it would look good on the Jeep hardtops also. Good job so far, "except for the paint issue, but we're all human".

I have a tip for you that I have had to use a couple of times in my life and I have been painting for more than 20 years. If you see the job going south like that in the first few coats , grab 5 gallons of gas and some clean rags and wash it off real fast. It will come right off clean again in minute . Then wash as you normally would with prep sol or the like and go again. If you let it set up its a sanding mess and all of that blah blah blah. I know how it sounds and I was in a real jam the first time that an old timer told me to do it and it worked and saved my ass.

Cudos on stopping while you are ahead and recognizing you have a problem.I noticed the other day when you primed the hard top, that you guys said it was about to rain. I painted Navy aircraft for 8 years, and I actually had this same scenario happen to me one time. The humidity is a huge factor, but I believe that the problem lies in the primer soaking up water. You didn't say whether or not you left it out in the rain after priming, but you did rinse it off with water. Primer will absorb water, and the water will not mix with the paint, therefore the paint will not adhere to the primer. I hate to say it, but I believe you guys will have to sand it back down to the plastic of the hard top, and re-prime it before you paint it. Make sure it is dry outside, because it will soak up the moisture in the air as well. Fresh primer, scuff, wipe down with the grease remover and tack cloth, then paint. Otherwise you might end up with a peeling problem down the road.

Too much moisture. You need to resend and re primer when it’s cured. Do rush it or your next coat will end up the same. Need to wait for it to be dry and preferably around 60-70 degrees depending on paint quality and mixture.

Alexander D there’s a few big differences in painting in a booth and painting outside lol. I can paint outside better than a few of my professional body guy friends who’ve been painting for years. But once we hit a booth they out play me. I do agree it does look like grease could have caused it but I’ve also had the same result in a paint job done in the rain and it turned out to just be the moisture. Definitely take his advise tho. Clean clean and clean again. And if you have any nervous feelings. Clean one more time. You really can’t OVER clean when it comes to home paint jobs. Just make sure there is a nice primer coat left to bond.
@DallasD_6 жыл бұрын
yea booth is controlled environment, easy to calculate evrything, lots of guesswork involved when you have so many variables outside, ive sprayed outside but i make sure to match the condition to a booth as best as i can, weedkiller hand-pump to wet the floor, etc... (regular hose sprays water evrywhere) I did my 91 YJ in the driveway and no booth, checked the weatherchannel.com every day till it was perfect temp and the windspeed was like 1MPH (usually in the mornings it was slowest)
