Thank you- Two additional tips that I think it would be also nice to point out to for people considering an Alaskan cruise are : 1)Alaska cruises with the inside passage and cruises with Glacier bay are two different types of Alaska cruise experiences. So for example if a person wants to see on their Alaska cruise the large vertical glacier walls with caving ice falling from the walls they would see that mostly in a cruise that included Glacier Bay instead of the inside passage route. 2) What time of the Alaska season they plan on going to Alaska is a possible factor that might add to more pleasure or possibly some disappointment for their trip experience if they go at the wrong time of the season for what they are hoping to experience in Alaska. For example the time of the season can effect a person’s Alaska experience because the time of the season has possible effect on possible Alaskan experiences like possible Aurora sightings, the amount of the snow ,weather, and activity level of wildlife and fish for viewing them.

Sorry, disagree. We’ve been to Alaska three times and have never been to Glacier Bay but have been to Hubbard Glacier each time on the Inside Passage and have seen glaciers calving twice. There are many ways to enjoy Alaska.

@@nkdgolf I am glad that you enjoyed your Alaska cruises and I agree with you that there are many ways to enjoy Alaska. I have not been to Hubbard Glacier and so thank you for your information about that Glacier area. What I was referring to is that even though they may be both nice glacier experiences the inside passage cruises that only go to the Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier area cruisers don’t really see the very tall wall calving glaciers like in Glacier Bay and now I have learned from you also at Hubbard Glacier. Some of the people on my recent Alaska cruise which only included the Endicott Arm/Dawes glacier were talking to me about how they were disappointed because they were expecting to see the tall wall type of calving glacier and they did not see that. So for them maybe a Alaska cruise that included Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier might have been a better fit but for someone else Alaska cruises with Endicott Arms/Dawes would be a great fit.

I have travelled on cruises to Alaska 5 times. I HIGHLY recommend HAL for these cruises. The information as you travel from the naturalists, is so entertaining and makes you understand what to look for as we are looking for wild life, etc. Also, the ships are smaller and they can get much closer to the glaciers and the spin in Glacier Bay is really great. Love going to Alaska in September. The local merchants have end of season sales so you can pick up bargains. Always recommend getting up when the sun comes up early, walking the deck with the fresh air, and then you will begin to see alot more wildlife as well. Just something to look at when you plan to go to Alaska.....bon voyage!

I just returned from my Alaska cruise. Here are a few tips. Plan your excursions early, especially if they involve helicopter tours dog sledding etc. on my helicopter tour, we only had 5 people. Utilize the excursion price match guarantee from your cruise line if they have one. On carnival, I had them refund the difference from my helicopter tour. The white pass train is cheaper to book when you get there. They have a set amount of same day tickets available and it was $40 cheaper than the cruise line. Most of all, have fun and take in the experience, even if it rains. You’re in nature and it will likely look different in 20 years! 🖤

I was soooo worried that there would be bad weather ( I’m ALWAYS cold), but Mother Nature was on our side! We had BEAUTIFUL weather for the entire cruise except for one day! My only regret is that because of the difference in time, the one day that the whales decided to make an appearance, we were taking a much needed nap, and missed the whole encounter!

My tip for your Alaska cruise is to go early in the season or late. The summer insect population on shore can be epic so if you hate flying vampire bugs go in the early spring or late fall. The weather will be cooler but it’s worth it.
@PJL70952 жыл бұрын
A couple quick tips I found when doing an Alaskan cruise are 1) where will you start & end your cruise. A lot of the cruises begin & end in Seattle but in order to accomplish this in 7 days they are unable to go to all possible ports. If you do begin in Seattle then end in Seward (or vice versa) then your flight itinerary can be quite higher. 2) Do you want to take advantage of seeing land sites like Anchorage or Denali National Park. This could be that rare opportunity to see these extraordinary places ever in your life so are you able to fly several days in advance of sailing or stay around a few days past to go explore. 3) the chance of bad weather if you go on the Alaskan cruise too early or late in the cruising season. They run them into early October so it is possible it might be rather cold.

Took a small plane excursion to the Artic Circle ( very humbling experience). We then enjoyed 7 days at various Princess properties & lodges. All unique & beautiful with stunning mountains views. Honestly for me the weather was perfect. Still snow on the ground & mountain tops exactly how I wanted to see Alaska. I liked the cruise portion we went to Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay, Swagway, Juneau & finished with two ports in Canads( Victoria & Vancouver). Alaska one of our favorite cruises, and the float plane to Taku River lodge is our #1 excursion ever. 20 + cruises in and that cruise was 2014 so it was just amazing. Love the scenery. The ports are mostly in a rain forest . My tip is plan and save the $$$ for the excursions. We did the cruise-tour with 7 nights on land and seven at sea. My tip is if you do the landtour do not do the 9 hour train ride. If it is sunny weather you will not love those glass topped trains 3-4 hours in, I think I had a sunburn from the train and after a few hours we were like oh wow another moose..not! The nightlife did not exist on princess. Take clothes pins to seal the sun out of your cabin because when we were there it was pretty sunny at 10-11 pm. :)

It's cheaper if you book outside of summer. (early spring - April to early May). Less rain early in season, but colder temps. In the early season you are less likely to see critters like whales or seals. Book the big excursions early as they can sell out ( both the ship bookings and when booking outside the cruise line).

One cruise, we were able to get more further into the fjord. Room view-wise, was different too. 1st, I had a O-View....and 2nd, Balcony. Both were great. I went up to a higher deck both cruises to get a larger view, to feel encircled by fjords and glaciers/mountains. I brought an extra sherpa blanket. We had perfect weather the entire time. That less hours of night skies is what got us too, so we adjusted. Only slept the 3-4 hours, 11pm - 3am or so on most nights. We partied during the daytime, 5 o'clock somewhere, right!?! I wore 2 layers as it got cold/windy up there. Rarely saw the moon and stars though, and didnt get a chance to see any northern lights. Thanks for this video.....you guys hit it nail on!

We're going on our first Alaskan cruise May 2023 and are beyond excited. While I agree that a balcony stateroom affords cruisers easy, private access to the views, not all budgets allow for one. We opted for an inside stateroom. It was $600 less than an oceanview and a balcony stateroom was quite a bit more. We will be on a class of ship with lots of indoor and outdoor viewing areas we can take advantage of. The $600 savings will offset the expense of flying, hotels, and excursions. Even on less expensive Caribbean cruises, depending on the price, we often opt for an inside or oceanview stateroom. The savings allows us to cruise more often.

My tip is this: went to Alaska in August 2019. Bought a warm jacket; why……because we were going to Alaska. Last minute we decided it was too much for the suitcase and to cumbersome to carry. We took our chances and made the right decision. We just layered up with a tee shirt underneath a outside shirt and a fleece type jacket and was very happy. Most port days it warmed up and was able to take off the jacket and tie it around the waist. When the cruise ship had it sale on hats, gloves, jackets and scarves we kinda chuckled. I suppose if you live in a cold weather climate, the sales were good. Florida isn’t one of those places you need all of that, nor was the days we were in Alaska. We had a great time, looking forward to going back. 2023!!! Great review.

We had our Alaska cruise from June 22-29 and got soo lucky with the weather! some days started out cloudy but by noon - blue skies and sunshine. Our cruise director kept saying how lucky we were that week, as the week before had alot of rain. We had gorgeous clear weather for Hubbard glacier and actually broke temp records on our day in Kethikan with 82 degrees. No rain the whole week and quite warm. However - I had packed all the cold weather gear and rain pants and umbrella but never used them!

Yep, weather can makeover break, in the AK....we had Rain in Ketachan and then when we did Glacier Bay, we had Snow falling, but we'd run out, tske a photo, run in, get Hot Chocolate, over and over that day! The 2nd time we went there on a cruise, we got off in Skagway, took the White pass train into the Yukon, and bsck in yo North pole and Fairbanks, then down to Denali, and on to Anchorage. And got to see even more of Alaska. And dtill we didn't see everything we wanted. Will difinity go back again. Vickie from SE Pa

Okay, so this is probably one of my most favorite videos you’ve ever made! Being a seasoned Alaska cruiser I agree with all your points and you shared great information! Oh and I loved the use of the word “EPIC” 😂 and a little surprise appearance at the 7:05 mark 😄 What an amazing and memorable cruise that was last year! I’d also like to share that if the weather is good then cruisers can also potentially see the northern lights up in Alaska, and to just keep an eye out for the Aurora forecast and where they are, it’s an amazing phenomenon that we experienced! Also bring binoculars to see more amazing wildlife up close and bring layers as you said Alaska weather is unpredictable! I love this video and I’m going to share it out with my community as well! Great work as always JJ! Keep it up! (Totally want Jared to do that super sticker right now 🤣)

Thank you for the information… This is my very first Alaskan cruise and I have no idea what to expect. Things like how powerful should my binoculars be, how heavy of a rain jacket do I need. Where are the local eateries to experience fresh King Crab? Should I even bother to bring anything dressy for dinner?

Trip advisor is a great place to read reviews on excursions, restaurants and things to see and do. You can create a "trip" and then ♥ things you are interested in doing. You can then go to your trip and add notes! I will read reviews, watch videos then add important info to the notes on each of my saved items. You can then organize all the saved info by date. It's a great way to nail down what you really want to focus on when in port and plan your time there. I am bringing my 8x42 Bushnells for the ship viewing ( they are fairly big) and will purchase a smaller pair for port (I am going May 2023). I am bringing a rain jacket that goes to my hips, waterproof back pack, umbrella and poncho. Warmer jackets like fleece and I think my down jacket too as it's 30's to 50 in early May. Waterproof hiking boots (will be going to the glacier and hiking). Layers I can peel off if I get too hot in port. I am on NCL Bliss which is a very causal cruise line. They have one "dressy" night. But, on an Alaskan cruise, dress in general tends to be way more casual, even in the evening. Each cruise line will have dress codes per dining venue, so you should become familiar with those codes. KZbin videos can help with a lot of these questions.

Really excellent advice. I would add from personal experience and as someone who sold these cruises for many years....the lack of children is not necessarily true. Summer school vacation is a big time for families to cruise and there can be many on those sailings. Also certain lines do a better job with kids activities but have had complaints that they are literally running all over the ship. So if preferring a more 'adult" experience go shoulder season not during school holidays. And yes the weather sure can be a factor. I always consider the inside passage one of the highlights and not every cruise line and ship incudes this.. Be careful with itinerary.

I went to Alaska last Sept on RC Ovation and we had great weather. I remember walking back to the bus at Mendenhall Glacier and we met a huge porcupine. He just kept going on his merry way. My favorite was seeing Endicott Arms Glacier. We got seats at the back of the buffet outside. Walked up front also. Can't wait to go again.

We cruised Alaska on Celebrity Eclipse and absolutely loved it. We went over Canada Day and Independence Day which was fun celebrating those holidays. We were fortunate to experience record high temps when we went. Our 1 bad weather day was when we were cruising to see the glacier. We actually had to turn back due to fog. Just a reason for us to go back and cruise the inside passage again. We also saw that “furry” jock strap at the store but passed on it! lol. Really enjoy your videos. Keep smiling and Happy Pride!

Sounds like you enjoyed a lot of good weather and views. We didn’t. We had good weather only in Juneau and Victoria. We didn’t see any mountains except one for day in Juneau because of low clouds, rain and fog. We didn’t get close to seeing the Hubbard Glacier because of thick fog. We had no cell phone or Internet service except while the ship was docked in a port. Our ship had free WiFi but no Internet service; what good is WiFi without internet service? The tour guides were excellent but 3 out of 4 buses we were on were in need of repair. We couldn’t see out the bus’s windows in Ketchikan, Sitka, and Haines because they were fogged over. Several people asked to be let off so they could take a cab back to the ship. The Haines bus shook violently for 3 hours on the highway to and from the summit.

Good question! Pending the month, rain gear is most important as well as layers. Some days look to be colder and then the sun comes out and warms up the day and other days the reverse happens. Being able to layer clothing is important for a day out in Alaska. ☺️

No disrespect - but seems like you needed a wee bit more planning. I am fortunate to have gone to Alaska 7 times, each with a land segment. Once, we were married on the Radiance of the Seas in Juneau. Talk about planning! We had a small gathering at our house in Maryland and everyone listened on the cell phone from Alaska. That night we ate in Chops with our 2 friends onboard. Wedding, flowers, cake, dinner in Chops. All about planning.

Hey Dorothy, October 15 is very late in the season. It tends to be colder and have more potential for snow. It still could be okay weather but the risk for poor weather is higher and it’s more likely to occur.

Thanks so much for the video. Yes, my family went on an Alaska cruise about 6 yrs ago, luckily we had great weather. However you are sooooo right about the cost of the excursions. My husband and daughter did zip line, we all went to Mendenhall glacier, we walked to the eagle sanctuary , and did the train to the top of the mountain, all were fantastic. We wish we could afford to go Dog sledding, Whale watching and Helicopter to the glacier, but the $$ for 3 people was too much. Overall we had a great time, but I don't think we will go again.

I totally agree about Alaska Cruises. Have been there once so far. Our first ever cruise. Have two booked for next year. We live very close to the Vancouver BC Cruise Port, so it will be our go to cruise port. Flying to a cruise port is likely not to happen, as we will not check in luggage. To costly. Would rather just cruise out of Vancouver.

We just returned from Alaska on Ruby Princess back home to SF on 6/19. One thing I really wasn't prepared for was how freezing cold both Juneau and Skagway were - even with proper coverage, rain cold and wind just aren't a good combination. Loved Ketchikan the best, did my shopping there and on the ship - and great food choices. Don't ask about ship food, any venue - hit or miss. On another note, we are positive and quarantining for Covid - got results yesterday.

Yes I think it is rare to get off a cruise now and not get Covid. We have taken 3 Alaska cruises and we were not cold. Temps were around 22 C. Most of the week on one of them, in July.
@chriswilliams6568 Жыл бұрын
Weather, bad or good, is not just a part of cruising, but travelling in general. You talk of moving the ship to avoid storms, like hurricanes, but that is not common up in Alaska in summer, like it is in Florida. We have been on 3 Alaska cruises in June, July and August and had mostly good weather each time. Temps between 15-22 C, a short shower or two on one of them. Of course shore excursions on helicopters and sleds are very expensive, but one does not need to do them. The one you must do is the short trip to Mendenhall glacier from Juneau, only a 20 minute drive away. Not visible by cruise ship, and they have a lovely visitor interpretive centre there. Good wishes and stay safe.

I found you guys through Cruising With JT and took my first Alaska cruise at the beginning of the 2022 season in May. Lots more "ugly" here unfortunately and some surprisingly amazing moments. The downsides with the early season adventures are the excursion maintenance and employee availability problems. The White Pass Railway was down, the Juneau tram was down, and all but one whale-watch was down in Juneau. The weather was cold, overcast and rainy. Most Skagway restaurants were closed due to staffing issues. On the plus side, there are later sunrises and earlier sunsets. On the epic side, it is possible to catch many pods of migrating whales and nesting eagles on the excursions that are operating. Thanks for the video!!

I’m sorry that you missed the White Pass Railway! We were there in mid-June and it was operating, it was my favorite shore excursion. The tram in Juneau in my opinion was not worth the cost, $45.00 per person, sure the view was “nice” but not worth that amount for myself personally

One issue with alaskan cruises that planning should consider....Alaska is two destinations. Part is coastal and is the perfect way to do that. The land portions shouldnt be ignored. Most cruise tours bolt on that land part but are often way over priced and limit time to see things you may want to consider. A little advance planning makes it a bit easier....and a lot cheaper. Consider car hire rv or a land tour.
